This theory is to prove that Cubone is related to Kangaskhan, and that Cubone is, indeed, just a different evolution of a Baby Kangaskhan. I thought of this in school, while working on some other theories; such as that Diglett and Oddish evolved from a common ancestor, that Scyther is a descendant of Kabutops, and that Aerodactyl is the ancestor of all modern Bird Pokemon and Charizard.
I submit that Cubone, along with Kangaskhan, are seperate evolutions from a common Baby Pokemon, whom I affectionately refer to as "Warllabe" (a combination of War and Wallaby, to go with Kangaskhan's name).
A Kangaskhan baby must be a seperate species, due to the fact that the baby looks different than the evolved form, which is common of all Baby Pokemon.
Warllabe would be a Baby Pokemon, who can evolve in two ways: into a Cubone, if its mother dies during birth, and it "Holds" the mother's "Skull" item (going along with the game's system); or it can evolve into a Kangaskhan when it is fully matured, much like any other Baby.
This theory is supported, I believe, in some strange similarities between the fully evolved forms of both branch: Marowak and Kangaskhan, which I've illustrated below.

As you can see in that link, the shape of the snout of both Pokemon is similar, as is the eye shape AND color, the shape of the end of the tail, the main toe, and the ear/horn/whatever that is.
In conclusion, a Baby Kangaskhan, whom I refer to as Warllabe, can either evolve normally, or into a Cubone when its mother dies, and it "Holds" the "Skull".
Of course, I didn't even bother to take the Pokedex entries into consideration in the preceding theory, but only because the Pokedex entries of the R/B/Y generation can sometimes contradict the newer Pokedex versions (the Pokedex is, after all, still a work-in-progress).
