I know this is a little silly, but...

So I'm enjoying the story in Shield so far, but I can't help but feel bad for my bum ass rival Hop. He never beats me, and, unlike previous pokemon games, is not a douchebag rival who it feels immensely satisfying to cream. He lost to me, he lost to Bede, and [so far] he's lost to the Ice Gym.

What I'd like to know is if it's my fault. Am I responsible for Hop's lack of confidence? Am I the reason he can't quite show up to snuff? Seriously speaking, if I had lost to Hop, would he have more confidence and had been able to beat Bede and the Ice Gym? Is there any way that I can help my always-sportsmanly rival, or is it a plot necessity that he keep losing to me and others?

I hear his dialogue changes if he beats you.

It's not your fault. Sure you beat him - multiple times - but you're his friend.

Bede, on the other hand, beats him and berates him. And his brother, the Champion, by association. It's definitely his fault.
