ID numbers

I've been thinking, since there's only so many ID numbers possible (there's still lots, but they're of a finite amount), say I started a new game of Ruby and chose a name that matched the OT of my Jirachi (CHANNEL)- complete with an identical ID no, would I be able to change its nickname or is there some other, hidden mechanic at work that would stop me?

After all, the game implys that the original trainer- a combo of name and ID- is all that's needed for a nickname change.

Thoughts, opinions?

Maybe, because it would have the same ID number, like you say, it`s like a glitch that would enable you to change it`s nickname.
But the OT`s name is also on the Pokémon, which maybe a hidden mechanic is at work there.
A good philosophic qusetion, I`d say!

Good, but unuseful question. Why? Because you'll have to reastart your game an infinite number of times to get an ID match. If this happens, you should be able to change it's name. I can't tell you for sure, though.

Actually, there is also a second "hidden" Trainer ID, so you are only seeing half the number. But the entire ID would have to be identical also. I'm not sure, but I would think it would check the Name and gender of the Original Trainer also. But if they were all identical, I don't see any reason why you couldn't change the nickname -- the game would think you were the Original Trainer.

Yes, you'd first have to get the perfect Trainer ID, then use cheat to find out your hidden ID, (and the one on Jirachi) So technically it's impossible, since you can't check Jirachi's hidden ID because it came from a different 'game.'
But if you could, I don't see anything stopping you from changing it.

Okay, so i'm basically looking at a LOT of luck. I've never heard of the hidden ID before, though- are there any useful links regarding it?

I can't give any links, but I know for sure that the actual ID number goes up to 9 digits. Which means that there's a 1 in 1000000000 (one in a billion, incidentally) chance of getting the right one. That's a lot of restarting.

There are 2 ID Numbers. One is the visible one. The other is hidden. Both can enter in a range of 65536 values (00000 counted.).

65536*65536=4,294,967,296

In order to perform Original Trainer tasks with a Pokémon, three values have to match exactly: the Trainer's name, the ID Number and the hidden ID Number. Look above. You have 1 in 4,294,967,296 chances of getting all required multipliers matching. The OT is the easiest one. Visible ID is tedious but possible. The hidden ID? That's the problem. :)

Wow, that's really interesting. I'm surprised there isn't a Game Mechanics page on it! :D
