Idea for Colosseum fic - opinions needed

Dragonfree

Just me
Well, I'm doing a special kind of fic.

It's based on Colosseum. Actually, very closely based on Colosseum. It's really a novelization of the game. And no, not a parody either.

It focuses on character development rather than the actual storyline, which of course everybody already knows. The point won't be to surprise everybody or make them excited about what's going to happen next, but to try to capture the game's places and characters in fanfiction form and bring a new view to things by using the points of view of very minor characters in the game. I've been wondering for a while if it would be possible to make a fic like that good, and I'm going to try.

So firstly, is this a good idea at all?
Secondly, would you be interested in reading something like that?
And thirdly, should I be tweaking the plot when I adapt it to the fic or just keeping it exactly the way it is? (Making an original plot or a largely original one is out of the picture; the point of doing this fic is to give the plot of the game more depth, not to make my own plot.)

Hmm...personally, I think it's a grand idea. Colosseum was supposed to be the most laid-back and personal game, as people say many things that determine their character, while the GBA villains say things such as "Fufufufufufu" all the time and the main character...is a mute.

Anyway, you get my point, but I think I'd really love to see Colosseum novelized. In-depth characterization for this fic would give it a much better input from gamers and readers alike, though in the original plot, you could make tiny side ventures from small events that occur within the plot, not being completely new, but a little fresh to keep something like that alive; like the sprinkles or frosting on the cake. I say go for it.

My answer to your first question is yes, it is a good idea. In fact, it's a great idea. Because I think that not everyone knows the full story of Pokemon Colosseum. Even though there are people who own it, some of them probably don't follow it.

My answer to your second question is yes, I'd be very interested in reading your fic because, personally, I don't think there are many fics based on the colosseum characters or the game itself. Also, I played the game at my friends but I don't own it, therefore I don't know how the full story goes.

And thirdly, my main concern is the characters that starred in that game. The main character, like most main game characters, are very, VERY quiet. Actually, they don't speak at all. And some characters say stuff like, and I quote, "Fufufufufufu". Are they trying to laugh, choke, or something like that? I don't know. So, I suggest you should tweak up with those.

Plot? I don't know much about the game's plot, apart from the part where the MC (Main character) betrayed Team Snagem and stole their Snagem machine, rescuing a young girl who senses evil pokemon and there were some colosseumshipping moments... and that's pretty much all I've got. You could tweak up a thing or two because script writers who wrote the game may have missed a thing or two, but at the end of the day that's up to you.

So, you pretty much read my opinions. I love the idea and hopefully I get to read it soon.

Peace.

A great idea. However, I would back it up to the point before Wes left Snagem and give a reason why. I always thought it could becuase he learned of their dealings with others. Or perhaps a mentor of his died and his hatred for Gonzap grew. I think a lot of Wes' character development came before the opening cut scene.

I say go for it.

Novelizations of games are so much more fun to read than playing the game. You can add more to them and in comparison they make the games look crap. Colloseum wasn't that great a game anyway, so a Novelization would surely be better.

A good plot would be concentrating on the main character Wes' personal issues, like him originally joining a team of theives, his choices of betraying them and then his developing relaionship with the crazy 'I see dead people' chick and the pokemon he rescues.

That's not really a problem. It's the same for Zelda fics, (speaking from experience) you can generally tell what a character's personality is like for their actions or portrayl in the game.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I was planning to tweak the characters' lines, yes, and definitely make Wes say something - I was more asking about the storyline itself.

Anyway... *continues writing prologue*

You did already hear my opinions on this (sorta...), but I'll say once again that I think that it's a lovely idea and I'd be happy to read it.

I think that, if you were looking to tweak the game's storyline a little bit, you could try adding a little more closure at the end. Well, I guess it depends upon how far you wanted to take the storyline. You could just end it with Ho-Oh appearing, or you could go through and maybe look at some of the stuff that happens afterwards. Colosseum never really addresses the aftermath (and almost all of the charaters revert back to their pre-final showdown lines), and it always bugged me.

I think it's a nice idea as well.

Hopefully you won't only focus on Wes and Rui for development-- I liked the idea behind a lot of the minor characters as well. Some motivations for them besides just being evil would be interesting.

I wouldn't change the storyline too much, but adding to it-- maybe some history of The Under?-- would be interesting.

Good luck :)

I've seen it done before, so I'd go for it...

and do you really mean it when you mean that you'll give character development to minor characters as well as the major ones? because I've seen alot of Colosseum fics that only seem to focus on Wes, Rui and most of the Cipher admins, especially Venus, Ein and Nascour... if you're lucky, you might see Miror B.

I've only seen maybe a single fanfic that actually gave characters like Cail (the green-haired guy with the shadow Furret), the Kids Grid (and Plusle), Duking and Willie (the very first guy you fight in the game) personality and background information, even Dakim and Evice are usually ignored when it comes to Colosseum fics.

but the biggest problem I would encounter is the shadow pokemon themselves... if you want avoid pokeboting and have every pokemon have personalities of their own, it's going to be really hard in Colosseum. Since the core of the game is capturing and purifying every shadow pokemon, there are at least 48 of them, 52 if you count Espeon, Umbreon, Plusle and Ho-oh (though I don't expect you to write that Wes gets Ho-oh) and I'm not including other character's non-shadow pokemon, like Venus' Milotic or Miror B's Ludicolo.

anyway, if I were to write a colosseum fic, I'd actually give Rui some pokemon to control... and have her battle as well, aside from just sitting on the sidelines and telling Wes when there's a shadow pokemon to capture...

Oh, definitely. (Funny you should mention Cail and the Kids Grid, because they are among the characters I look most forward to writing). As I said, the plan is to write some chapters/parts of chapters from their points of view, even before Wes first meets them.

Another funny coincidence, since that was a part of the plan as well. ^^

Heh, of course. Wouldn't make a lot of sense with the ending as it is...

Anyway, thanks for all the encouraging comments. I'm not in doubt about whether to write it anymore. :) Admittedly I'll need another memory card for my GameCube before I can get very far. Still, you can probably expect the prologue and first chapter pretty soon.

Don't forget, after you purify all the Pokemon, you can use the Japanese bonus disc to get a Light Ball Pikachu and Celebi (whom I guess joins you since there are no more Pokemon left for it to purify with the Time Flute). Though, I doubt Dragonfree would try focusing on many of the sidequest aspects you can do after the main game, such as getting Houou on Mt. Battle. As it is, it would be a pretty insane enough task to try to make decently fleshed-out scenes showing the slow purification process (and development) of all those Pokemon.
