I've cleaned up this a bit since the last time I wrote up this, organizing the points into several categories rather than making a huge list of all of the things. In addition, I scratched out many of the entries that I felt were unnecessary due to lack to discussion or sheer obviousness.

WARNING: THIS THREAD IS NOT FOR GAMEPLAY IDEAS. Post here if you have an idea to share, but I highly advise you read this post first before posting an idea.

But now, on with the list...

Pokémon
  • Pokemon evolving/hatching into new Pokemon using old items/methods
I've seen people talk about evolving Eevee into Espeon, Umbreon, and "Leafeon" with the Sun, Moon, and Leaf Stones and this will not happen. Why? Those items have existed in previous games, and if Pokemon such as Eevee would have evolved this way they would have done it when the item was introduced. That's why the Sun Shard and Moon Shard were shown in XD. The general rule here is that Pokemon need a new item or method in order to gain a pre-evo/evo.

  • Fusions/fusion evolutions
There won't be fusions nor fusion evolutions, it would result in freakishly powerful creatures and a great deal more work for the sprite/3D model designers.

  • New types
There will be no Light or Love or Freaky Ancient Dinosaur type, it's been confirmed in the CoroCoro interview.

  • Triple type Pokemon/double type moves
This is also a big no. There will not be any triple types nor double type moves, it would be even more complicated to track super-effectiveness and gauge how much damage an attack would do.

  • Making your own Pokemon
NO! This is wrong in so many ways. People will make Ghost/Dark types with Wonder Guard and 255 in every stat and an infinite move compatibility. Save the creation of Pokemon for Tajiri and his cronies, it was his idea, they designed every Pokemon, and Tajiri is the final word on every Pokemon created.

  • "Inter" evolutions
Yea, I didn't think this had to be added but I was wrong. Basically, your Mareep is going to evolve into a Flaaffy on its way to Ampharos. It won't become a Pluuffy or any other useless intermediate Pokemon. Even babies are more useful than these intermediate additions, so don't waste the Pokedex space, okay?

  • Pachirisu being an evolution of Plusle/Minun or Dorapion being a Gligar evolution
Plusle and Minun are too unique in their own right to be evolving into other Pokemon; they likely will not receive any evolutions, but if anything's certain it won't have connections with Pachirisu.

Furthermore, take Gligar and Dorapion into consideration: one is a Poison/Dark type, the other is a Ground/Flying type. Two entirely different persuasions with two different abilities. Furthermore, Gligar gets Wing Attack, which means that the wingless Dorapion cannot possibly be an evolution. Face it, Dorapion is too unique in its own right to be an evolution of any Pokemon we know about currently.

Traditions
  • Starters other than Grass/Fire/Water
It's been like this in every game, this is one of only two working type triangles (in one direction, the types are super-effective against the next type, in the other direction the types resist the next type). Only a few other working triangles exist such as Fighting/Flying/Rock and Fire/Rock/Steel, and they all seem dubious because it has been Grass/Fire/Water ever since RBY and the abilities that increase the power of those type of moves in a pinch have been starter-exclusive. Moreover, it is plain and obvious to most how these types interact with each other, unlike Fighting/Flying/Rock. Such rudimentary basics have helped to make the game so successful and easy to learn, and such action will definitively continue in the future.

NOTICE: The above might be entirely false. As it was so noted by the official website, we could be seeing Psychic/Dark/Fighting starters instead. Also, I know there are more type triangles, but we don't need them for the intents of this thread.

  • Pre-evo/evos for legendaries
This will also not happen. Legendary pre-evos will not happen firstly because they cannot breed, and barring that, because they're LEGENDARY. They aren't supposed to be any more than one of them in the storyline. Evos are equally unlikely, most legendaries have great stats anyway and evolving them would simply make them greater.

  • Real-time battling
Real-time battling would undermine the entire battling system that has been THE staple of the games since when it was created. Battles will always be turn-based as they have been since the beginning of the franchise.

  • Drastic differences between the games
The two games have hardly ever differed in the core gameplay, simply offering a different set of Pokemon and at most, a somewhat tweaked storyline, available per version. There is no reason at all to think that these two games will be polar opposites of each other.

  • Having more than six Pokemon in a team
This would oversimplify the game beyond reasonable proportions. We can cover our bases just fine with the six Pokemonw we get now, considering that each one gets to learn four moves altogether which constantly improve over time. To retain even the most basic of challenges to this game, we must keep the cap of Pokemon you can carry on yourself at any one time at six.

Hardware/Software
  • Exploring old regions on the same card as the new region
Don't put your money on this one. They want to focus on Shinou, the icon of the new generation, so they likely aren't going to waste memory rehashing an old region. They had to water down both the new region and the old region when it came to Johto, so it seems unlikely that they will bother to take that risk again.

  • Voice-recognition for attacks
Okay, this is just weird. First of all, the DS microphone is not sophisicated enough to pick up on different sounds, and even if it was voice recognition is never very reliable and prone to make fatal mistakes. Moreover, it would simply be weird shouting out "FLAMETHROWER!" "RETURN!" "EARTHQUAKE!" to execute an attack. Which is better: pressing two to four buttons to execute an attack reliably; or implementing a brand-new voice technology, reserving memory for recognising the various commands, and seeing it work only half the time, PLUS having to do this four times for Japanese, English, French, and German? Yup.

  • More than one save file
Why would they give us more than one legendary? Moreover, why should more memory be used on extra save files when it could be used to make the game, you know, good? Don't forget that when you add a save file, you're actually adding two: a standard save file and a backup. Also, one could obtain copies of legendaries/getting all the starters/multiple rare items with this. Doing this would be detrimental not only to the gameplay, but also to Nintendo's income.

  • Specialized roles
The thing about being a trainer in Pokemon is that you can do anything you want to, where only what the programmers haven't put in is the limit. I think the whole bit about specialized roles is that people are too attached to the anime, where trainers are trainers and breeders are breeders and etc, because you don't see Ash in Pokemon Contests, May getting badges, or Brock doing either.

Guys, you can do breeding, "coordinating", etc. I'm pretty sure half of you spent a good chunk of time soley getting ribbons and that coveted "You won gold on all contests" thingy for the trainer card. You are being a coordinater. And most of you who do competitive battling constantly breed Pokemon to achive better or desired stats. You are being a breeder.

The only thing that's definitely a no-no is gym leader. Why? A Gym Leader is a test for trainers that they must pass in order to move on to the next level. In otherwords gym leaders are meant to yield to those who defeat them at a certain level. You are expected to LOSE.

Outside Influences
  • Rule of thumb: GAMES =/= ANIME or manga or TCG or etc...
Remember this one well. Ever since Day One of the anime, it has been the games influencing the anime, and only rarely the other way around. We might get a few moves or something from the anime or whatever and that's it. Therefore, I can assure you that such things as anime-style contests/breeding or starting out as a coordinator as opposed to a trainer can safely be forgotten in terms of new ideas for Diamond and Pearl.

Other
  • Manaphy being a common Pokemon
It has already been confirmed to be legendary Pokemon. Besides of which, Pokemon featured in movies rarely turn out not to be legendaries. The only one was Unown, and even that has some legendary-like qualities to it.

  • Killings/graphic violence/sexual depictions/etc.
This is Pokemon, not GTA. They aren't going to put T- or M-rated material in a game that is marketed for CHILDREN.

  • Diamond/Pearl for the GBA
These games are for the DS, we've known that since nearly the time they were announced.

  • Traveling to other regions
Even though it would technically be possible for this to occur, there are several reasons why it is not in anyone's favor: first of all, any Pokemon you could get from these places can simply be traded into D/P. Moreover, why bother with old regions when Nintendo and Gamefreak are trying to sell a new game? Being able to use the core memory components of the old games isn't helping them get richer. You don't need to take an economics course to see why Nintendo and GF are going to push for D/P and D/P primarily above all other Pokemon games. Their day is done, accept it and move on.

Also, take heed of these precautions:

Don't go posting that you know when D/P will be released or discussing that a new Pokemon has been revealed/hinted at unless you have a link or picture from a
credible source posted in the message (use your good judgement to deem whether a source is credible or not).

As a general courtesy and public service announcement, I don't want to see many of these threads anymore as do a fair number of other regulars, so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use the "Search this Forum" function at the upper-right corner of the thread listings.

about the starter rule...

it should be added that the purpose of the starter trangle is that it's the simplest example of the otherwise complex concept that is the very core of the battling aspect of the franchise. This is so begininers who had never touched a pokemon game until now have an idea on how to play.

remember, pokemon games aren't designed for only veterens who have been playing them for years, they're designed for everyone, even those who are complete newbies to the games.

Eszett, Satoshi Tajiri didn't create every Pokemon. Ken Sugimori "almost single-handedly designed the first 251" (from Wikipedia), with him and some other random staff designing the ones for Ruby/Sapphire/Emeald.

And Latios, the "oops I accidently saved over your game" thing rarely stops other games from having multiple files.

Okay, I added what PDL and zuloon said.

Also, I would like to thank Wolf Goddess for stickying this again because I didn't before. So, thanks to her. :)

EDIT: Fixed based on the below post

Eszett, you still have, "[Tajiri] designed every Pokemon". Sorry if I'm being too nitpicky. You might want to put that "they" designed every Pokemon.

YAY! You fixed it!

I wouldn't rule this one out 100%. We do have precedent in G/S/C, which did take place in a brand new region for their time. (The Coro Coro interview stated only that the game takes place in a new region (which we now know as Shin'ou), not that we wouldn't see any existing regions later on.) The "watered down" argument is based solely upon G/S/C, which were only 1MB in Japan. Pokémon Ruby/Sapphire were 8MB in Japan. The standard DS cart holds 128MB, which should be enough for much more than 2 Hoenns, even given the addition of loads of new Pokémon, items, moves, and graphics. On top of this, there's nothing preventing Nintendo coming out with a larger model of DS cart for these games. There's a fair chance there won't be any existing regions, but it's not 100%.

Your arguement lacks any form of logic. It was confirmed in a CoroCoro interview, therefore it is 100%.

Satoshi created them, Ken designed them. Big difference.

And the point of the multiple save files thingy wasnt the "oops I accidently erased over your file", it's the nature of the game itself that makes multiple saves inconvinient. People will spend hundreds of hours on Pokemon doing whatever for competitive battling. The amount of dedication people will put into Pokemon is about the same amount of dedication people put into MMORPG's.

Just saying, it's more convinient if people don't share the game.
Ummm...if people spend countless hours ev training and whatnot, then they'll be more careful not to save over their files won't they?

No, they didn't. It's in my post: they said D/P take place in a new region. THAT IS ALL. So did G/S/C, yet they had Kanto. It was never said that exitsing regions were excluded, for sure.

Edit: Let me rephrase in stupid speak so you can understand:
1. There's no technical reason why they can't.
2. It's been done before. (it fits within the scope of a "traditional RPG")
3. They never said they wouldn't. (see above)

I agree with Zuloon. That was uncalled for.
Oh yeah, another thing is that you probably won't be able to choose to be a 'Rocket' or 'Magma' or 'Super cool evil team that can't spel' (intended) and you probably can't design what you look like, just a note

Oh an Eszett's logic on duplication is valid. If you have three save files all you have to do is save when you have say the whole batch of legendaries (including promotional Pokemon) on all three files, trade all three to a game that has one save file, save that game on all three files, rinse, lather repeat. This totally kills any kind of promotional deal.
This could be avoided by locking you into saving to the same slot you loaded from. Also, to have n save files availible, you only need to store n+1 in order for full backup functionality to work: the objective of save backups is to prevent corruption from losing power mid-save.

I still don't believe we'll see multiple saves. Pokémon games tend to be rather personal in nature, with all the customization and trading the games support. Having multiple saves on one cart seems to undermine that.

PDL

the reason why pokemon doesn't have multipule save files on their carts is that it makes it too easy to have duplicate items and pokemon.

with multipule files, there's usually an option to copy one of your saved games onto another file. If you were able to copy another pokemon save file onto an empty one, you would have duplicated all items, including rare ones such as Masterballs and Lucky Eggs, and rare pokemon such as event legendaries and shinies.

This wouldn't be a problem if it wasn't for the ability to trade your pokemon and items.

you were able to do this, then people would have truckloads of rare pokemon and rare items. Which would eventually cause the pokemon franchise to lose potenial profits from their games since no one would be attending their events to get rare pokemon.

This is why Nintendo has gone out of their way to prevent copying pokemon games, such as second save files in carts, it's not even possible to copy GC pokemon games onto different save cards.

The anime HAS influenced the games a few times. They wanted the anime to be different so they gave him Pikachu. This made Pikachu very popular and caused the creation of Yellow Version and many Pikachu-based games like Hey You Pikachu and Pokemon Channel. Also, you can capture Pikachu in all three generations, no doubt because of the popularity he gained from the anime.

Didn't Ash get pikachu because it was popular in the first place? I always thought this was the case and not because of any desire to have the anime different.

However, the game designers essentially selected Pikachu as the Pokemon on which they wanted to focus the most in their marketing campaign, meaning that they were going to plaster Pikachu on nigh every promotional item they made regardless of its popularity in the anime.

Even so, any influences the anime have had on the games have been minimal at best. Even the whole Yellow version was not terribly anime-oriented: so you have Pikachu trailing you and shouting its name in a garbled fashion, but most of the rest of the changes were cosmetic at best. You don't go traveling with Brock or Misty, for instance, and the two prominent members of Team Rocket only make occasional appearances.

Beyond that, the anime really has had no guidance on the primary handheld RPGs. Games like Channel and Hey You, Pikachu! are not designed by Gamefreak, which is the sole developer of the main RPG series.

This is the only thing I sort of disagree on. I highly doubt that having another save file would take up too much space, and only some people would exploit this for their own benefit. If they want to cheat then all the power to them. I do understand your point about Nintendo's income, but then again, massively popular titles such as the Legend of Zelda have multiple save files, and I don't think THAT's hurt THEIR sales.

Actually... consider this. There are about what? 10 boxes in RS? Each hold 30 Pokemon no?

I think there are actually 14 boxes, they originally had 12 in RBY, but they increased it to 14 in GSC.

massively popular titles such as the Legend of Zelda have multiple save files

but Zelda games don't usually allow you to trade vital data like characters and items... the only example of gamepak to gamepak data transfer in Zelda was Oricle of Ages and Oricle of Seasons... while in pokemon, it's another core aspect of the games.
