Ash's Pokemon

Kanto

Pikachu - His starter. It would start out disobedient but quickly become Ash's best friend and most loyal pokemon. In this saga it would decide it doesn't want to evolve and would learn iron tail and volt tackle. Oak caught Pikachu after saving it from Team Rocket who was literally using it as their lab rat. Because of Team Rocket's experiments Pikachu didn't trust any humans other then Oak until it met Ash. Although, Pikachu was also powered up to levels that exceed it's evolutions power due to their experiments. Giovanni wants Jessie, James, and Meowth to capture the "special" Pikachu at all costs. Pikachu is loyal, friendly, and brave.

Ivysaur - Caught as a Bulbasaur. Bulbasaur would have been caught in a village full of abandoned pokemon. Bulbasaur was abandoned itself and has become the caretaker of this village's pokemon. As a Bulbasaur it would refuse to evolve as well but would be forced to evolve to save Ash. Due to this it would temporarily hold a grudge against Ash but would soon come to terms with it's new form. Ivysaur is gruff but lovable.

Charizard - Charmander was originally Ash's rival, Damien's, pokemon. Upon using Charmander against Misty and losing horrible Damien would release Charmander. After Ash helps Charmander realize that Damien released it, Charmander joins Ash. Ash becomes determined to prove that Charmander could be stronger than any pokemon if trained properly. The problem is, Ash doesn't yet have the skills to make Charmander grow effectively. Upon evolving Charmeleon quickly realizes that Ash is holding it back and gets rather violent although Charmeleon still helps Ash out in gyms. However, upon evolving to Charizard it becomes completely disobedient and only battles on special occasions (Blaine, Mewtwo, and Damien). It eventually gets it's revenge against Damien at the Kanto League by defeating three of Damien's pokemon. However, in Ash's battle against Gary in the final round it refuses to battle yet again and costs Ash the League. Mr Goodshow sees that Ash would have won had Charizard not disobeyed and makes Ash an offer. He can challenge the Elite 4 just like Gary if he completes two goals. 1. Defeat the 5 Orange Island gym leaders. and 2. Learn to control Charizard. Charizard is sarcastic and proud.

Squirtle - Originally it was the fiesty leader of a Squirtle Squad that were all abandoned by their trainers. It actually takes Leaf hostage and threatens to kill her. Squirtle sees how Ash tries to save it from Jessie, James, and Meowth and decides to join him. It develops a rivalry against Gary's Blastoise. Squirtle is very competative and comical.

Pidgeot - Ash catches a Pidgey to help look for Team Rocket after they make off with Pikachu and Oak's parcel. As a Pidgeot it develops a violent rivalry with Ash's other fully evolved pokemon, Charizard.

Marowak - Ash's Cubone's mother was originally killed by Team Rocket inside the Lost Tower. Mr Fuji saved Cubone from certain doom making him the only human that Cubone trusts. Mr Fuji suggests that Cubone join Ash when he goes to defeat Team Rocket in the Lost Tower. Together Ash and Cubone defeat Team Rocket and calm the spirit of Cubone's deceased mother. Cubone eventually evolves and stars against Giovanni in the Viridian Gym officially putting an end to his reign. When Ash first captures Cubone it's afraid of people like Misty, Brock, Leaf, and Randy but eventually grows to feel safe around all people. Cubone could be considered the "emo" of the group

Muk - Ash catches a Grimer at the Cerulean Powerplant. Gary catches it's leader, a Muk, in the very same episode. Grimer evolves rather quickly and plays a huge role on Ash's team until Saffron City. Ash uses Muk against Sabrina in his battle against her and loses. Muk (along with Leaf and Randy) are turned into dolls while, with the help of Sabrina's father, Ash escapes. Gym Leaders, Misty and Brock, are appointed by Professor Oak to assist Ash on his way to Lavendar Town for training so that he can go back and save his friends from Sabrina. In Lavendar Town Cubone takes up Ash's 6th slot so when Ash saves Muk it's sent directly to Oak's lab. There is a running joke where Grimer/Muk glomps many characters.

Krabby - Ash becomes determined to capture and train more pokemon after he hears that Gary already has 50 pokemon while he only has 6. Ash captures Krabby but hardly ever uses it. Only for the League and two gym battles this saga. Oak reminds Ash that a good trainer rotates his pokemon and has a good arsenal of reserves so that he/she can be prepared for any kind of battle. In this saga Krabby takes a backseat until following sagas where Ash learns that he needs to gain a good variety of pokemon rather then constantly relying on the same team of 6.

Orange Islands

Pikachu - Pikachu doesn't have many changes in this saga. It's increadibly short

Ivysaur - It proves itself to be a powerhouse. After Ash returns home he finds that Oak's ranch is in trouble. Many fights between pokemon there have broken out. Ivysaur is left behind to settle the fights.

Charizard - Charizard begins to obey Ash after being saved after losing a battle to James's (also disobedient) Gyarados. Charizard has a rematch against Gyarados and wins. After returning to Kanto Ash finds out that Team Rocket is taking over Sliph Co. again so they go to stop them once more. On the way to Saffron City Ash comes across the Charcific Valley which he leaves Charizard at for training

Squirtle - On the way to Saffron Squirtle also leaves the group. It joins the Squirtle Firefighting Squad lead by Officer Jenny.

Pidgeot - The rivalry between it and Charizard dies down in the Orange Islands. On the way to Saffron Ash and co. encounter the Fearow (Spearow) that chased Ash at the beginning of his journey attacking a group of Pidgey and Pidgeoto. Pidgeot scares it away after battling it and Ash leaves it on Route 1 to prevent the Fearow from attacking again. Like all of the released pokemon in my version of the Pokemn anime, it'll return, and much strong.

Marowak - It's injured in the battle against Blake(Drake), the Orange Islands Gym Leader. Ash decides to leave it at Oak's to rest.

Snorlax - A pokemon that's caught in the Orange Islands and sent directly to Oak's lab since Ash has a full team of 6 already.

Sevii Isles

Pikachu - No major changes for Pikachu until the next saga

Muk - Muk is bought back to Ash's team when he realizes that all of his other pokemon are off doing other things. Muk grows increadibly in this saga.

Kingler - Krabby is also bought back. It evolves after battling a few Frontier Brains. We get to see it's true personality in this saga. It's a very cranky pokemon that constantly pinches Ash.

Snorlax - Snorlax is the final pokemon Ash withdraws from Oak's Lab before heading to the Sevii Isles to stop Team Rocket once and for all (and to do some last minute training at the Battle Frontier before challenging the Elite 4 and Gary). Snorlax doesn't want to do anything but eat and sleep at first but Ash eventually gets it into the fighting spirit and it quickly becomes his main powerhouse of the Sevii Isles saga.

Hypno - Cassidy and Butch hypnotize an entire cities pokemon with a Drowzee. After Ash and co. defeat Cassidy and Butch for the final time they're arrested by Officer Jenny. Jenny makes a request and asks Ash to raise the Drowzee and get it out of the evil ways that Cassidy and Butch bought it into. Drowzee is very manipulative at first but disdainfully accepts that it's stuck as part of the "good guys". Drowzee evolves and actually becomes a powerhouse on Ash's team. It has a scheming personality and manages to be calm, dark, and serious, yet comical, at the same time.

Primeape - Ash decides he's going to fill the final two slots on his team with two new pokemon since his Kanto team have all left for the time being. Ash's first capture in the Sevii Isles is a Mankey. Ash finds that controlling new pokemon and training them from scratch is a pain. Mankey is very wild and uncontrollable and that only gets worst after it evolves. With both Mankey and Snorlax hard to control, Ash wishes he could call on his Kanto team but decides he'll never grow that way. Ash enters Primeape in the P1 Grand Prix, gains Primeape's respect, and wins the whole thing. From that point on Ash uses Primeape quite often (Although it does still give him a black eye from time to time)

Marowak - Ash temporarily brings Marowak back to enter a fencing contest. Marowak is now completely healed. Ash allows Marowak to pay respect to his mother at the Memorial. Ash wins the fencing contest with Marowak and decides to leave Marowak with Kohan, a master fencer.

Charizard - Ash faces off against Spudnick and Moltres. Gary faces off against Apollo and Zapdos. Leaf faces off against Armstrong and Articuno. Ash's battle is over Mt Ember's canyon. Since all of his pokemon are landbased they lose rather quickly. Luckily Charizard shows up at just the right time. Ash rides on Charizard's back as Spudnick rides on Moltres during the mid-air flame battle. Charizard wins and Spudnick falls to his death. Ash grabs Moltres's master ball and sets it free. Charizard then goes back to the Charcific Valley.

Johto

Pikachu - It becomes overloaded on electricity and nearly dies. Because of this, Ash gets the light ball to regulate it's electrical power. This will explain why it's power fluctuates so much. Pikachu is held hostage forced to evolve by a member of Neo-Team Rocket in Slowpoke's Well. Raichu bcomes depressed with it's new form and can't get over it. Raichu sweeps Bugsy in a gym battle. When Ash saves Celebe in Ilex Forest it takes them back in time to before Pikachu had evolved and this time Ash manages to prevent the evolution. This also means Ash needs to earn his Hive Badge again, however.

Croconaw - Ash gets a Totodile from Professor Elm to battle Silver who had just stolen his Chikorita. Pikachu is still healing from it's light ball ordeal. Ash loses and Silver even though he's a rookie trainer (although he has been through extensive harsh traininhg under his father Giovanni throughout his childhood). Totodile is hyper but rather wimpy. Silver explains that it's IVs are crappy and he should release it. Ash works with Totodile and turns it into a powerhouse. It eventually evolves and becomes even stronger. It keeps it's jolly personality however.

Bayleef - Ash catches a Chikorita. After saving it, it develops a slight crush on it's trainer. Chikorita is an attention hog and gets into arguments with Pikachu after she sees that Ash favors it. Upon evolving Bayleef becomes emotional after Ash yells at it but comes around and accepts his appology. Bayleef may be emotional but it's one of his strongest Johto pokemon.

Cyndaquil - Ash catches a shy Cyndaquil that has trouble controlling it's back flame. Ash eventually gets it fired up (literally) and it becomes his most reliable Johto pokemon.

Noctowl - Ash has to catch a Hoothoot before passing through the Dark Forest. It just so happens that the Hoothoot he stumbles across is shiny (and kind of a pretentious douchebag). The Hoothoot is very intelligent and manages to outwit Ash. He eventually manages to catch it. After joining the group it's mostly a loner but does get irritated at Ash's more dimwitted pokemon's hijinks. It evolves and becomes a powerhouse despite being much smaller then the average Noctowl. It's left at Oak's lab at the end of the saga.

Donphan - Ash's first egg was won in a tournement. This egg hatches into a young and impressionable Phanphy. Phanphy is very baby-ish but eventually grows more mature. It evolves into Donphan and is able to keep up with the rest of Ash's pokemon. It's left at Oak's lab at the end of the saga.

Heracross - Heracross is caught and remains on Ash's team for a while but is eventually sent to Oak's lab. Ash has to send a pokemon to his storage area to get Phanphy's egg. This Heracross constantly humpsattacks Chikorita to get at it's sap. Heracross was powerful as soon as Ash caught it which is why he decides to leave it at Oak's instead of all of his other pokemon. Ash does call on Heracross for later Johto gym battles however.

Sudowoodo - Ash catches a Sudowoodo that's blocking the road to Goldenrod. Sudowoodo is increadily good at mimicing making it hard for Ash to catch. At this point he already has six pokemon so it's sent directly to Oak. Ash uses Sudowoodo for a few Johto gym battles.

17 Elements Isle

Pikachu - No changes this saga

Feraligatr - Croconaw quickly evolves and is a major help for Ash against a few of the 17 Elemental Guardians. Ash learns that it would be best to train Feraligatr to specialize in attack power. Ash succeeds in making Feraligatr amazingly strong. However, Ash comes across a Machamp trainer that easily trumps Feraligatr in attack power. This trainer uses the power bracer. Ash leaves Feraligatr with this man for extra training.

Bayleef - Becomes terminally ill with a disease that effects grass types and even Nurse Joy says that she can't save it. This makes Ash as sad as he's ever going to be in the series. Bayleef's condition is getting worst and Ash meets an armomatheropist specialist. This woman begins to heal Bayleef and Bayleef starts to show some real recovery. The woman tells Ash that Bayleef is going to be fine and will make a full recovery but it needs some time. She also promises to train Bayleef after it's healed to make it stronger then it's ever been.

Cyndaquil - Ash meets a harsh fire breather and his Magmar. Magmar proves it's much stronger then Cyndaquil. Ash is surprised to see that his shy little Cyndaquil wants to stay with this tough trainer. Ash agrees with his pokemon's request and leaves Cyndaquil behind. (The reason I'm having pokemon released is so that Ash can train many pokemon at once. The 6 he's carrying around and all of the pokemon he has "in training")

Heracross - It becomes a regular member of Ash's team for part of the saga and participates in many battles against the 17 Element Guardians. It is eventually left to protect a forest full of bug and grass types from construction workers that are using their Pinser to chop down (sap filled) trees.

Sudowoodo - Just like Heracross, Ash adds it to his team on the way to 17 Elements Isles. After many hard battles Ash leaves it with a mimic comedian to do stand up comedy.

Delibird - Ash accidentally catches a Delibird that belongs to what's left of Team Rocket. Jessie and James become mad since they were planning on keeping Delibird as their own pokemon. Delibird had many quirks. It's a cleptomaniac and often causes Ash to get in trouble due to it's thieving.

Larvitar - Ash saves an egg from a Pokemon Hunter. The egg later hatches into Larvitar. The Larvitar isn't like other new born pokemon, it doesn't trust Ash, Marina, Kotone, or Randy. Because of this, Ash doesn't officially try to catch it right away. Instead they travel with Larvitar and let it grow used to them. It takes a group of wild Unown showing Ash and co. Larvitar's inner thoughts that reveal it's pre-birth adventures. The pokemon hunter had attacked it's mother, Tyranitar, and stolen it as an egg. Ash and co. realize that have to return Larvitar to it's mother. When they arrive at -insert anime-only mountain here- the hunter attacks again and steals Tyranitar. At this point Larvitar decides to join Ash to save it's mother. Together they defeat the hunter, find the client he sold Tyranitar to, and save it. Ash lets Larvitar choose between him or it's mother and it choses to stay with him but promises to visit it's mother. It becomes a powerhouse on Ash's team. At the end of the saga it's mother reappears and it keeps it's promise of seeing her again.

Hitmontop - Ash catches a Tyrouge that trains itself to near death. The Tyrouge doesn't want to accept Ash's training style believing it won't be effective enough to make it strong but Ash shows it that if it keeps on training the way it is, it's muscles will just deterioate making it weaker. Tyrouge accepts Ash's training style, evolves, and becomes a major powerhouse on his team.

Ursaring - Ash and co. meet a manipulate and rather vile Teddiursa. This Teddiursa uses fake tears to fool Ash and co. into believing it's innocent and gets their other pokemon in trouble. Teddiursa ends up catching itself in one of Ash's pokeballs during it's mischief. It continues being mischievous but battles on Ash's side and eventually evolves into an Ursaring. It's learns that it's cuteness has faded and it's mischievous side dies. It becomes wild and vicious. During one battle it continues to trash it's opponet even after it's won the battle. After this Ash decides he has to train Ursaring to be less violent in battle, and to show some sportsmanship.

Eevee-Espeon - Bill reappears and gives Ash an Eevee. This Eevee quickly evolves due to Ash's friendship and becomes an Espeon. Aside from being a powerhouse there's really nothing to say about Espeon.

Hoenn

Pikachu - Pikachu learns return during this saga. It's an attack that is as strong as volt tackle due to Pikachu's high happiness. It also learns light screen

Grovyl - Ash catches a loner Treecko that evolves into a loner Grovyl. Grovyl's a bit of a combination of Noctowl and Tyrouge. Treecko/Grovyl's some what of a rogue. It's tribe kicks it out for being a trouble maker and then Ash adopts it.

Marshtomp - Ash gets a quirky and somewhat simple minded Mudkip. Despite being unintelligent it's a very powerful pokemon. It's commonly used as comic relief. Upon evolving to Marshtomp it grows even stronger.

Swellow - Ash catches a Tailow with extremely high will power. It manages to continue fighting even after taking several super effective hits from Pikachu. Tailow evolves and still has great endurance but ends up severly injured due to it's stubborness and unwillingness to lose a battle. Because of this Ash sends it to Oak's to rest for a while. It returns shortly afterwards and Ash teaches it how to use it's impressive speed to dodge attacks rather then just relying on it's endurance and destroying it's body.

Numel - Numel is another pokemon used for comic relief. Ash has trouble battling with Numel. It's low speed isn't something Ash is accustomed to when it comes to fire types. Ash eventually develops a training style to put Numel's great power to work. Numel's personality is hard to decipher. It always has the same blank stare on it's face and takes a long time to respond to it's surroundings.

Glalie - Ash catches a Snorunt and has no real problems with it until it evolves. Since Ash is unfamilar with training a pokemon such as Glalie he has no idea what strategies he should use while battling with Glalie. Ash encounters a Weezing trainer that teaches him how to use levitating pokemon effectivly. Snorunt joins Ash after saving him and his friends from a blizzard.

Makuhita - A pokemon he catches and when his team is full meaning it gets sent to Oak. When Swellow is injured it temporarily joins his team. It is often used for gym battles and in the League however. It's capture episode it ate Ash's backpack.

Spoink - Another pokemon Ash catches during Hoenn that is sent directly to Oak's lab. It is never able to be part of Ash's main team but is used for Gym Battles and during the League. It's an extremely happy and hyper pokemon.

Absol - Ash and co. encounter an angry mob that's trying to ride a wild Absol out of town. Ash eventually catches the bitter Absol and promises to train it and make it see that not all people are bad. It is used in a few Gym Battles and during the League but doesn't become part of Ash's team until later.

AG Battle Frontier

Pikachu - No changes

Sceptile - It evolves early in the saga and due to pushing itself so hard it becomes unable to use any attacks. Ash later helps it regain it's attacks and it becomes the main powerhouse on his team until Ash loses to Anabel. Sceptile gets angry at itself for losing and runs off into a forest. Ash finds it training itself hard and lets it train. Ash tries to call it back to it's ball so they can continue their journey but Sceptile releases itself and makes it clear to Ash that it wants to stay and train on it's own. A true loner to the very end.

Marshtomp - Ash comes across a grass type trainer who urges Ash to use a pokemon with a disadvantage. Marshtomp is used and loses badly. A salesman jumps out with his Quagsire and impressively defeats the grass type trainer. It turns out the grass type trainer is his sales partner. The salesman explains that he specializes in training pokemon to overcome their weaknesses and offers to train Marshtomp for a small fee. Ash is upset that he doesn't have the money since Marshtomp seems to want the training. After some Team Rocket antics the salesman sees Marshtomp's passion and decides to train it for free.

Hariyama - Makuhita is made a permanent part of the team after Hoenn and quickly evolves. Hariyama likes to intimidate opponets with it's large size but is a coward when fighting opponets even bigger then itself. Hariyama eventually gets over this and becomes a powerhouse. Ash leaves Hariyama with a Snorlax trainer to practice sumo wrestling.

Grumpig - Spoink also becomes a permanent member of the team and evolves. It keeps it's hyper personality.

Absol - Now that we see it outside of an arena we see that it's personality is rather brooding. It's hard for even Ash to raise Absol's happiness. Absol uses a psychic attack to show Ash it's past. I was always chased, demonized, and mistreated because people consider it an omen. Eventually Ash raises it's happiness. One day Ash has a trainer battle in the middle of a small village. Upon releasing Absol from it's ball, Ash's yokle opponet runs in supersticious fear. Ash, May, Max, and Randy are chased out of the village. Jessie, James, and Meowth see this as an opportunity to plunder the village. The village's only defense, the sheriff, has no chance against Team Rocket. Ash and Absol save the day and the village considers Absol a hero. Absol remains in the village to protect it from further damage.

Torkoal - Ash gets a crybaby Torkoal. This Torkoal is increadibly strong from the beginning.

Flygon - Ash's first dragon type. Ash gets it as a Trapinch and it's evolution is rather quick. Despite his experience, Ash can't control a dragon type. It takes some getting used to but Flygon eventually listens to him 100%

Sharpedo - Ash's first seabased pokemon. He catches it in a fishing competition. Ash can't really battle with it so he tries to send it directly to Oak. Oak tells him not to give up on it, there's a way to use any pokemon effectively. Carvannah evolves before this problem is solved. Ash realizes that he can make Sharpedo mobile on land by having it dart around like a torpedo with aqua jet. It is the "torpedo" pokemon after all. Despite rough beginnings it becomes one of Ash's stronger pokemon. It gets startled when toughed and hurts Ash with it's rough skin.

Orre and FRLG

Ash's Kanto team returns while he defends his Kanto Champion title and battles Team Snagem in Orre

Swinub - A shadow pokemon Ash catches and purifys. Ash doesn't use it much beyond that.

Sinnoh

Pikachu - During this saga Ash tries to perfect thunder armor. A strategy that will make it's electrical attacks top notch even though it's power's being regulated by the light ball. They eventually succeed but it's such a difficult move it takes the whole saga.

Swinub - After noticing that it hasn't had much training Ash decides to bring it to the Sinnoh region along with Pikachu. It does well in the gyms but eventually shows more interest in contests. Ash trades it to Dawn for Buizel.

Staraptor - Ash catches a Starly to help find is lost Pikachu upon arriving in Sinnoh. It grows into a strong Staraptor. Unlike the last three birds who all had dramatic storylines, Staraptor is used for comic relief. However, of all of them it may be the strongest yet. After Ash's full battle with Paul it becomes apparent that his Sinnoh team just isn't strong enough the way they are and one by one they end up leaving for special training that gives them 100% focus rather then having to share training with the 5 other pokemon on Ash's team. Staraptor is left with a Skarmory training to perfect roost.

Grotle - Upon evolving Grotle has weight problems. Just watch the anime, I'd use the same story.

Buizel - Same as the actual anime. It would be left with a Hitmonchan trainer to train solo before the League

Infernape - Same story as the anime. Monferno would evolve in the League against Paul and master blaze.

Gliscor - Same as the anime. It would have been used much more often. It would be left with an air master with a Jumpluff to train.

Riolu - Ash gets an egg from Riley. It hatches into Riolu which joins his team after something's left. Ash learns to bond aura with it making it extremely powerful. (Ash vs Paul, 6 on 6 would take place when Ash has 4 badges)

Cranidos - Ash would find a fossil while searching the underground with Byron. It would later be revived into a Cranidos. Cranidos would be fascinated by technology and constantly distracted by looking around at what the world has become when it's supposed to be battling. Ash fixes this problem and it's fascinations are just used as comic relief from then onward.

Spiritomb - The last pokemon that joins Ash's side after Staraptor, Gliscor, and Buizel's release. It's formed when Ash is given an odd keystone from a creepy old woman. The souls of Ash and all of his friends from over the years are formed into the odd keystone. This brings their self consciousness to Spiritomb's realm. Spiritomb's capture episode would be a hilarious mental reunion of every major character of the show while their motionless bodies lay in the real world. Eventually everyone escapes Spiritomb's realm and Ash leaves the keystone behind. Spiritomb cries and follows Ash. In the following episode Ash catches Spiritomb who terrorizes a village to get his attention. Despite being a ghost/dark type and attacking the village it's actually a rather comical and friendly pokemon.

Aipom - An Aipom follows Ash around for a while and steals his hat. He eventually catches it during Dawn's Grand Festival.

Battle Zone

Pikachu - Nothing new

Grotle - it is left with a trainer that specializes in training heavy pokemon at the beginning-middle of the saga.

Infernape - In the middle of the saga it would battle Ash's Charizard, lose, go into a depression, and then Ash would leave it with a move tutor to grow stronger.

Lucario - Riolu would evolve, become a major powerhouse and get left with an aura guardian

Rampardos - Cranidos evolves

Spiritomb - Left to protect the balance of the spirit world and real world.

Ambipom - Evolves and becomes even more playful

Dusknoir - Caught as a Duskull in Spiritomb's departure episode. It becomes the main powerhouse of Ash's team this saga. Dusknoir has a serious personality.

Gible - Same one from the actual anime

Drapion - Caught as a Scorupi.

I'll write up a full conclusion at a later date, but for now, I'll keep it short. (In comparison)

Kanto: Gary, Richie, Damien and maybe AJ would all become actual rivals to Ash, showing up earlier on and appearing a lot more often than they did. Ash would actually earn his badges too... there'd also be a Rocket based storyline behind the 8th gym.

Misty would be a good rival to Ash too, and she would challenge 'masters' of each elemental type, aiming to prove her abilities. She'd gain a rival in the person who left Pallet with the Bulbasaur, and possibly or two of the COD's.

Brock would be like himself, except he'd capture something to prove his abilities as a breeder, maybe a Machop that's too afraid to fight larger opponents, and he manages to coax the Pokemon out of it, evenutally becoming a powerhouse on his team.

Johto would follow the same sort of line, Ash and Misty would both recieve good rivals, and maybe Brock would in a Paul-esque trainer, who insists on mis-treating his Pokemon to get them to perform well.

Ash would end up releasing his Kanto Pokemon before the first Johto badge too, meaning he'd have to go the whole Johto journey with his Johto Pokemon, rather than those from Kanto.

There'd be a few other changes, there'd be more battles - Kanto was a time where the writers tested the ground, so to speak, so they didn't focus on the battling portion of the anime. Like I said, I'll come round to making a full explanation.

i would have the teams as

KANTO

Ash:
Pikachu
Bulbasaur
Squirtle
Charizard
Pidgeot
Growlithe

Kingler
Muk
Primeape
Tauros x30
Butterfree
Snorlax

Brock:
Onix
Graveller
Golbat
Eevee

Gary
Blastoise

Nidoking
Dodrio

and instead of Growlie James would have a vulpix instead.

Misty:
Starmie
Psyduck
Staryu
Poliwag
Togepi

ORANGE ISLANDS

ash would Oak growlithe and release pidgeot and catch Lapras and Snorlax so the teams would be the same as they are in the anime so ill move on to

JOHTO

Ash:
Pikachu
Bayleef
Feraligatr
Cyndaquil
Espeon
Noctowl

Tauros x30
Butterfree

The main female's pokemon:

Kanto

Leaf's Clefairy:
Ash destroys Leaf's bike as she's on her way to Pallet Town to get her starter so she forces Ash to accompany her as she heads to Pallet. As you know, Leaf is too late to get one of the Kanto starters just as Ash was so Oak is forced to give her one of his "special" pokemon. She gets a Clefairy. This Clefairy disobeys Leaf just like Pikachu disobeyed Ash. Leaf and Clefairy quickly become friendly just like Ash and Pikachu, but unlike Pikachu, Clefairy is a mischievous troublemaker. Clefairy is the butt of many running jokes. Clefairy grows into a powerhouse and helps Leaf out greatly in contests.

Leaf's Butterfree:
Leaf's first capture is an accidental one. When Leaf first started her journey she hated bug types and didn't want anything to do with Caterpie. She tries to release Caterpie but can't bring herself to being so cruel even to a bug type. Caterpie remains ever joyful as it attemots to gain it's trainer's love. Her distaste for bug types carrys on to when Caterpie evolves. Metapod is eventually captured by a herd of Beedrill and Leaf has a digfficult time bringing herself to save it. At this point Metapod gives up on Leaf but this is short lived as it protects Leaf from a Beedrill after it sees that Leaf has come to save it. Metapod evolves into Butterfree and defeats all of the Beedrill. After seeing Butterfree, Leaf learns that even bug types can be majestic and good at contests and grows to love Butterfree just as much as her other pokemon.

Leaf's Jolteon:
Leaf catches Eevee after competing with Derek. Derek catches the Eevee that Leaf originally had her heart set on but Leaf manages to catch one for herself any way. Eevee is a good battler and bonds with Leaf more then either Clefairy or Butterfree. It is for this reason that Leaf has a difficult time evolving it. After seeing that Eevee wants to evolve into Jolteon Leaf decides she's going to do what's best for Eevee and enters an Eevee contest which both Marcus and Derek are also entered in. Marcus and Derek both get to pick their evolutionary stone prize before Leaf due to coming in a higher place in the tournement then her but luckily neither of them chose the thunder stone. Leaf evolves Eevee and it becomes her main powerhouse of the time. Eevee and Jolteon are both extremely hyper.

Psyduck:
Leaf and Melany are both competing to catch a Golduck. Melany ends up catching the Golduck and Leaf is stuck with a Psyduck. This is no ordinary Psyduck however. It is unable to use any mores at all except confusion which it can only use when it's headache is severe enough. Psyduck also has difficulty swimming so it's basically useless when Leaf first catches it. Psyduck eventually learns to use basic moves like scratch, water gun, and hidden power and the ability to swim but still can't control it's strongest attacks, it's psychic moves. After doing to meditation training taught to Leaf by a COTD Psyduck learns how to control it's psychic attacks upon it's will and learns both zen headbutt and confusion. Psyduck actually ends up Leaf's strongest pokemon in Kanto. No matter how much development it gets, it retains it's dimwitted personality.

Leaf's Vulpix:
Leaf gets her Vulpix from a Pokemon Stylist. Vulpix is a conceited ***** (using the literal term for a female kanine) but is very loyal to Leaf. Vulpix tends to have problems with the other members of the team, particularly Ash's Squirtle.

Orange Islands

Leaf's Clefairy:
No changes in the Orange Islands aside from maybe a new attack.

Leaf's Butterfree:
Butterfree is left home to train with Leaf's mother at the end of the Orange Islands arc.

Leaf's Jolteon:
Also left home.

Leaf's Psyduck:
Leaf leaves Psyduck with Misty at the end of the Orange Islands arc to train but it returns to the Sevii Isles Grand Festival.

Leaf's Ninetales:
There are no contests in the developing Orange Islands yet however Leaf doesn't just sit around while Ash collects badges. She trains her pokemon fiercely for her next set of contests. A firebreather ends up using his fire stone on Vulpix when he sees that it wants to have the strength to save Leaf and Clefairy from Jessie, James, and Meowth. Leaf is surprised, but glad, to see her new Ninetales.

Leaf's Lapras:
Leaf's only capture in the Orange Islands occured when she and the others first arrived in the Orange Islands. Ash and co. were fishing for something that could give them a ride through the Orange Islands due to the fact that the Orange Islands doesn't have a ferry service. Leaf ends up catching a Lapras but that didn't end Ash and co's problems. Lapras was disobedient and refused to give them a ride. After some work they eventually talk it into being obedient and it acts as their primary means of transportation through the Orange Islands. It's battle skills remain mostly unknown since it's only battles during this saga are against TR or training with one of Ash's/Leaf's pokemon.

Sevii Isles

Leaf's Clefairy:
No changes. It's comical antics continue.

Leaf's Ninetales:
Leaf decides to bring it with her sense she hasn't had an opportunity to use it in a contest since it's evolution.

Leaf's Lapras:
In this saga it proves it's strength and becomes Leaf's main powerhouse. It is even used in the battle against Armstrong and his Articuno and ends up defeating them.

Leaf's Gloom:
Ash and co. meet a very shy Oddish which burrows into the ground at the sight of people. It eventually gets over it's shyness and evolves into Gloom.

Leaf's Pichu:
Randy creates his first egg when he leaves his Ditto at the Sevii Isles breeding center. Randy cares for the egg and it hatches into Pichu. Upon hatching Leaf is the first person Pichu sees and considers it his mother. Pikachu becomes a father figure for the new born Pichu. Pichu quickly adapts to contests and becomes a powerhouse even though it is very young.

Johto

Leaf's Bellosom:
Leaf is continuing her second journey through Kanto as Ash and Randy travel through Johto. As Ash and co. make a stop at a Breeding Center they get a phone call from Leaf on their PokeGear, she is in Saffron City, sight of the new bullet train heading to Goldenrod City in Johto. Ash and co. just happen to be close to Goldenrod so Leaf decides to meet them there. On the way to Goldenrod Ash and co. find out that Jasmine is holding a pokemon contest. Kris and Leaf both decide to enter. It's revealed that Gloom evolved into Bellosom and it wins the Jasmine Cup for Leaf. Leaf departs on the Bullet Train.

Kris's Togepi:
Kris gets an egg as her starter pokemon rather then an actual pokemon. This egg comes from her father, Mr Pokemon. Eventually it hatches into a Togepi. The very young Togepi is unable to adapt to Kris's harsh style of training. It needs love and care. Kris even comes close to releasing Togepi for being to weak but Ash and Randy talk her out of it. Kris also gets angry at Togepi for not evolving but ironically doesn't realize that it's her harsh treatment that's keeping it from evolving. Kris eventually calms down, accepts her friend's goody-two-shoe style of training, and turns Togepi into a very good contest pokemon.

Kris's Ledian:
Kris catches multiple Ledyba but only keeps one after checking their stats in her pokedex. Like all of Kris's pokemon, Ledyba is indifferent towards the cruel Kris. Due to Kris's cruel ways she loses her first four contests and takes it out on her pokemon. Ledyba eventually evolves much to Kris's enjoyment but is still unable to take down major opponets. It's not until Kris begins bonding with her pokemon that Ledian becomes a powerhouse.

Kris's Politoed:
Kris catches a Poliwag which is probably the pokemon she's the harshest towards early in the saga. Poliwag is a very nervous and reserved pokemon which causes Kris to deem it as weak. It's Poliwag's determination that brings Kris to her senses in the first place. Poliwag fights a COTD and continues fighting even though it should have been KOed by then. Poliwag eventually evolves into Poliwhirl and starts to show what a powerhouse it truely is and then it finally evolves to Politoed when Kris forces a King's Rock on it and demands Ash to trade with her temporarily. Politoed becomes so strong that Kris feels bad about evolving it. Kris feels that she's not good enough to train such a strong pokemon and regrets being such a hardass earlier. Politoed assures her that he forgives her and actually becomes a jolly, carefree pokemon now that it knows it can trust it's trainer.

Kris's Snubble:
Kris steals Snubble from Madam Muchmoney. After realizing the theft Ash and co. tell her that they're not going to travel with her any longer. Madam Muchmoney shows up enraged but after it sees that her Snubble would rather live an active lifestyle rather then constantly smothered with love she decides to let Kris keep it for it's own good. Ash and co. eventually decide to let Kris join them again but tell her that she needs to active her dreams honestly rather then cheating, lying, and stealing. A lesson she eventually learns the hard way after she loses her first four contests all in a row.

Kris's Flaffy:
Kris catches a lazy Mareep early in her journey. This Mareep matches wits with her and seems to try to taunt her. Despite it's cute appearence it's tough enough to deal with Marina's training even when she trained harshly. Mareep is very lazy and loafs around. Unlike Marina's other pokemon, it does not fear her. Even though it's pretty aggressive and mean towards Kris it's friendly towards Ash and the team's pokemon. In particular it seems to try to help out the rest of Kris's team when she's harsh towards them. After Kris's change of heart Mareep evolves and becomes friendly towards her.

Kris's Magby:
This is the only pokemon Kris catches in Johto after she ends her Monarchy. Magby is what Poliwag used to be. Weak, scared, and young. It really tests Kris's commitment towards becoming a friendlier trainer. Kris doesn't break under pressure and trains Magby to be strong.

Soul's Marill:
Soul already has her Marill when Ash and co. meet her. Marill is very energetic just like it's trainer. It's revealed that Soul got it as her starter on her 10th birthday from her parents. Marill is very good at Pokethlon.

Soul's Aipom:
Soul's Aipom is much different from the one that Ash would be catching much later in the series. It seems to want to join Kris at first due to it's lust for power however after getting a firsthand taste of Kris's harsh training it decides it would be better fit with Soul. Since Leaf just uses Aipom for the charge rally during it's Pokethlon debut it grows bored with the idea of Pokethlon. However, after it watches Marill in a Pokethlon and realizes that they do indeed contain battles it becomes extremely interested. Aipom becomes a main powerhouse on Soul's team.

Soul's Girafarig:
Soul's Girafarig is her main powerhouse in Johto. It's tail literally has a mind of it's own giving Girafarig split personalities.

Soul's Elekid:
Continuing the trend of Soul catching pokemon that would be better fit to Kris and Kris catching pokemon that would be better fit to Soul, Soul gets a gruff and somwhat arrogant Elekid. Regardless of it's personality it enjoys being with Soul and is very good at Pokethlon battles.

So Kris have a similar personality to Paul from the anime but she still diffrent from him.

Well a dishonest Paul. I'd try to make all of the girls pretty different from each other.

Leaf would basically be Misty as a coordinator. And she'd come from a family of successful (and judgemental) coordinators.

Kris would be a cold hearted cheater. Having more in common with Ash's rival of the time (Silver) then Ash.

Soul would be a Pokethlon Athlete and would be very similar to Ash. After Kris notices Souls succeeding by playing fair and treating her pokemon with respect she'd eventually come around.

May would be basically the same way she is in the anime. I'd make her a bit more ditzy though. Her dad would play more of a role. Pushing her towards gyms rather then contests but eventually accepting her choice to do contests.

And Dawn would be the same too, her rivals would just have more of a role and she'd make a choice to switch to gym battles mid-saga due to her failure at contests and eventually switch back to contests after realizing that gyms aren't her true passion.

17 Elements Isle

Kris's Togetic:
Now that Kris treats her pokemon kindly Togepi would evolve. It would have trouble overcoming it's past with her but after using it's harmony powers (pokedex reference) it'll strengthen it's relationship with Kris and evolve. It'd be very good at contests as a Togetic but would be left with the Mirage Kingdom Guardian and called back for the Grand Festival.

Kris's Politoed:
Kris would find it hard to release Politoed after it's grown so strong but she would decide to leave it at an aquarium for it's own good. It would also be called back for the Grand Festival

Kris's Snubble:
No changes

Kris's Magby:
No changes

Kris's Misdreavus:
She'd catch her very first comical pokemon. An obnoxious, prankster Misdreavus. Marina's serious side would come out yet again as she scolds Misdreavus. Misdreavus would become upset and run off but Kris would find it, and comfort it (even though being nice disgusts her). It'd be powerful even though it's comic relief.

Kris's Minun:
A marketable Hoenn promoting pokemon. Symbolizing Kris's negative personality. It wouldn't get along with Soul's Plusle at first but opposites would eventually attract and they'd become best friends.

Soul's Azumarill:
Marill would evolve but would keep the hyper personality

Soul's Aipom:
No changes aside from getting stronger

Soul's Girafarig:
No changes

Soul's Elekid:
Much like Pikachu at the beginning of Johto, Elekid would overload on electricity and nearly die. After finding out that the light ball won't work on Elekid Ash and co. leave it at a Powerplant to put it's excess energy to good use. It returns for the Athlete's Cup however.

Soul's Whynaut:
Soul gets a Whynaut and has to practice extensively. When she first catches it she has no idea how to put it's unique style of battling to use in a Pokethlon. In the end she masters the battling style and Whynaut becomes one of her best pokemon.

Soul's Plusle:
See Kris's Minun.

Pokemon that each character would constantly have out of their pokeball:
Ash - Pikachu (every saga)
Leaf - Clefairy (All of her sagas)
Randy - None
Team Rocket - Meowth
Soul - Marill (Johto), Whynaut(17 Elements Isle)
Kris - Togepi (Johto), Snubble (17 Elements Isle)
May - Torchic (Early Johto), Munchlax (AG Battle Frontier)
Dawn - Piplup (All of her sagas)

Team Awesome
If I were in charge of the anime, here's what I'd have happen in the future:

-- Have Ash discover girls (his cluelessness has gone on LONG ENOUGH)
-- Jessie wins two more ribbons and gets to the Grand Festival, though she doesn't win
-- Meowth finds a way to learn pay day
-- James brings Chimecho back (and keeps Mime Jr.)
-- Ash and company (with Dawn) head to Johto for the Battle Frontier, and Ash uses all his Johto starters for at least some of the facilities. Totodile would evolve, and Ash would spend an arc trying to keep it from dancing so much and causing havoc because it's larger now. LOL :)
-- Max rejoins the group to start a pokemon journey, and gets ralts
-- Make some less sucky bad guys than Team Galactic for the next region after Sinnoh/Johto
-- Age the characters a few years after Sinnoh/Johto and start some fresh stories.

I'll try and think of a few more things.

That´s a cool thread!
Let me see....

If I was in charge, then...

1st! Gible could never be caught, or if must be, at least insere some intelligence!
2nd! Buizel evolves.
3rd! Team Rocket could get more spotlight and less bad luck.
4th! Misty's return!
5th! Dawn failing the next contest for the 3rd time in a raw and Jessie win it. Then a competition between them for the 5th ribbon!
6th! Dawn's piplup back to the pokeball!
7th! Dawn's piplup evolves!
8th! New pokémon to Brock!

What should continues in the anime:

1st! Draco Meteor keep falling on piplup, ahahahahaha!!! (yeah, I hate that stupid penguin. Who likes it anyway?)

A lot of people might hate me for saying this, but I would cut some of Team Rocket's time and put Paul in more. Team Rocket's funny and all, but it gets so predictable and unfun to watch seeing the same motto, the same giant robot machines, the same balloon, and the same, "We're blasting off again" thing. I'm not saying take them out of the show, but just not in every episode. I also think when Paul shows up, things get more intersting and unpredictable.

First ash would get butterfree back and finally get pidgeot back (he promised). Also I would give Dawn a leafeon in contrast to Glaceon. Oh and Ash would age actually.

Zalman

Master of Puppets
- Back to the Kanto music.
- Give Ash Pidgeot and Primeape back as he promised.
- Give Team Rocket Arbok and Weezing back.
- Make better teams for the characters.
- Less fillers. (Waaayy too many.)
- Make Ash evolve a water type.
- Make Gary a selfish trainer again.
- Give AJ an appearance (they promised they'd meet again.)
- Evolve Pikachu (yes, I went that far.)

If I was in charge, I would do the following things:

- Show Holiday In Acapulco, Legend Of Dratini and the Ice Cave uncut
- Cut down on censorship and show a lot of the cut and edited scenes especially in the early episodes
- Make more special Chronicles episodes
- Bring back Arbok and Weezing
- Bring back Primeape and Pidgeot
- Make Ash more smarter and less forgetful
- Bring Misty back
- Have some more darker episodes like the Red Gyarados arc, Team Galactic episodes, etc
- If possible, I would make it so the Pokedex isn't always out of date and have it completely up to date from the beginning
- No episodes what become nonsensical after new generations like baby Pikachu, the Pokedex saying only 3 evolved forms of Eevee, etc

I wrote this before on the Misty Club months ago:

I for one think the show is getting a bit stale and they need to do some serious overhaulin' with this whole "Pokemon Master" dream. So, my lovely idea is the show ends in two or three seasons but goes out with a bang. They can end this season with Ash in the Sinnoh League, then a season for the Johto Frontier. But then, they have the most awesome long final season. In said season all of the main characters will be brought back, as well as all of the gangs pokemon. To solve the whole "Pokemon Master" ordeal there will be one tournament held for every trainer. It can be called "Master Cup" or something and anyone can sign up but they have to have a butt load of pokemon. The more you've done the higher seed you get, so Champions and Elite Four are the highest. Followed by Gym leaders, Frontier Brains and trainers who did well in leagues, then there would be others then beginners. This is a perfect place for Ash to bring back his classics and the beginning of the season could be spent with him finding Butterfree, Pidgeot etc. Also, Misty could then be in the whole season, and compete as well as Brock if he grows a pair and Morrison, Tyson, Gary, Ritchie, Max?, Jimmy? yada yada yada. There can also be a tournament for the best coordinators where Dawn, May, Nando, Drew and everyone else can compete. Both would be held in the same area. This is the Olympics of pokemon people. It would be awesome. Its basically my dream ending and also my personal favorite way of bringing Misty back because honestly I want to see how good she got not her walking around with Azurill like in the AG.

Brock wouldn't be cast aside as merely an advisor and/or domestic servant and actually get some development time

Brock's Pokemon would evolve or he'd get new ones along with his old ones. I miss the days when he carried like, 5 pokemon on hand.

Ash would've gotten an Eevee

Dawn wouldn't be so forcefully and obviously put into the spotlight

Dawn would have more interesting rivals that appeared often (Only Zoey frequently appears, but she's not very antagonistic.... Kenny and Nando are nice characters in my opinion but they too are neither antagonistic nor frequently appearing, Ursula is the only antagonistic one but only recently she became recurring)

More of Dawn's Pokemon would evolve or she'd catch more variety.

Ash would rotate his pokemon more often.... like, he'd catch a fair amount of new ones but also travel with maybe one or two of his old ones at a time. Seriously, I hate how it's almost like he's forgotten them, he doesn't even MENTION them in the anime unless he suddenly decides he wants to put them in his party, like how he did with his Bulbasaur after May got hers.

Totodile would evolve at least once.

They'd make properly developed counterparts for game characters that didn't get much of a role or none at all, like Brendan, Lucas, Silver (debatable since Paul is kind of a Silver counterpart in terms of personality, though in my opinion they're still very different characters), Gold, Kris, Leaf, etc.

Ash and gang would run into recurring characters more often instead of making hundreds of characters-of-the-day.

Tracey and Delia wouldn't only appear when Ash goes home and Misty, May, Max, Gary, wouldn't only become "past news". Seriously, is a random occasional appearance more frequent than every 100 episodes or so too much to ask?

On the same note, other recurring characters wouldn't have been completely forgotten either.

James would have more of a role.... Jessie got contests, why can't he have something too? I still find it ironic that he won that contest on his first try... He's proven that he's actually quite skilled at some things, couldn't the writers find something for him to do?

Less focus on simply showcasing new Pokemon and/or pokemon in a new game (I love Gen II pokemon and loved the Johto fest episode, but they went a bit overboard on the Gen II pokemon), more focus on characters and plotlines.

Team Rocket actually goes through a threatening phase..... they're currently the only criminal organization in the Pokemon world not to go through some major devastating project loss unless you count Mewtwo which happened not only ages ago but in a movie. Okay, yeah, that would mean the loss of purpose for the Trio and Butch/Cassidy, but we still haven't really seen what Giovanni can do personally.

Janine would've gotten an appearance

Older Gym leaders would make an occasional appearance, wed get more substance in understanding the importance and role of the Elite Four and/or Champions.

More information on pokemon breeding in the anime world, for the most part we still only make inferences in the anime world. Sure, that may be enough, but I personally find it an important part of the pokemon world that just isn't touched upon enough in the anime.

There'd be SOME semblance to the passage of time. Ash doesn't seem to have aged but he clearly has, considering that in a short he said "it's been a year since he'd met Pikachu" and he's travelled with TWO girls that turned 10 after he did.

Ash's father. We know he exists, but there could at least be SOME more of an indication of what what the hell he's doing.

The GS ball. Yeah, they said the plot was discarded because of Pokemon 4ever, but Celebi has already been mentioned and featured in non-movie stuff, so couldn't they just still use that plotline? I know they'd have to travel back to Johto in order to but still...

Pokeballs other than the standard ones would make an actual appearance, rather than just be cameos. It's been ages since Apricorn balls showed up.

There'd be some sort of definite reason as to why Ash seemingly has a connection with Ho-oh. That plotline has been going on since episode 1!

Basically....... the anime would be less dominated by filler and focus more on character and plot development rather than game promotion. Already created characters would have more of a spotlight instead of being forgotten and replaced by bland, deliberately forgettable and constantly dished out characters of the day, and the Pokemon would also get their share of development too. My biggest pet peeves about the anime is how older characters and Pokemon alike just get pushed to the side like rag dolls. That shouldn't happen! In my opinion a good trainer should never forget about their Pokemon! No matter how long ago they were caught. And sure, it's a given that if you're gonna go on a journey as a trainer you'd meet a whole ton of different people along the way, but do the writers have to make Ash and gang meet over 50 something people and SHOW US before the plot is moved forward? And then do they have to do the same thing OVER and OVER again? There's a reason that pretty much the only episodes I watch are ones where a recurring character reappears or if there is character/plot development.

I sometimes think that if they were gonna shove away all the old stuff, they should've just stopped the "Ash" arc when Johto ended and continued with a new trainer.... you know? Make seasons, like how Digimon did, except everything takes place in the same universe, and perhaps make the older characters make cameos just so we know the old characters are still going on in their lives. That way less people would feel like our old favorites were completely forgotten and the writers would actually have a good excuse for not bringing back an older character.

*sigh* sometimes I wish Pokemon Special/Adventures were animated. Okay, yeah, some really strange things happened in Special and Special in its own way bended the Pokemon universe at its own convenience, but at least things are more balanced out in Special.

Yeah, ok!

Two problems with that:

a) If Ash always kept the same Pokemon every saga, everyone would complain. In case you haven't noticed, Ash started using his old Pokemon again in the Battle Frontier arc after Hoenn ended. And from the looks of the new opening, old Pokemon will be used again in DP.

His only old Pokemon that get shafted are his Johto team, due to their unpopularity and how disliked they were years back.

b) The show now simply has too many major characters. If you factor in all the mains, plus every single major rival for Ash/May/Dawn...there is a crapload of characters. Way too many to get focus all in the same arc.

The older characters all had their older arcs. It's not like they didn't get their proper screentime back then.

1. I *know* Ash started using his older pokemon again in Battle Frontier, and I was indeed very happy when I saw the new opening included his older Pokemon. HOWEVER, I don't see why he can't even occasionally rotate some of them out. And I don't mean keeping the same old ones over and over again, I mean, rotating them ALL. He certainly has enough pokemon to create various combinations and I really don't see the problem in letting his old ones meet his new ones sooner. He and his friends are traveling to a Pokemon center at least every few episodes, surely it's not a huge deal to just transfer one or two out for a few days! Not to mention they could be helpful to him too. Yeah, I'm aware of that mentality of his to use only the pokemon in that region, but he really didn't seem to have a problem when he suddenly decided to let his Bulbasaur meet May's, or even in the future when he decides to use his older pokemon in the Sinnoh league.

2. There are plenty other shows out there that have numerous important characters that still get to play their part. I understand its unreasonable for the characters that have split from the gang to pursue their own goals to constantly reappear or get some major focus, but even some form of communication might be nice, at least to know they aren't forgotten. I remember being happy when Gary ended up in Sinnoh because it at least gave him the chance to sometimes meet up with Ash. Is he showing up often? No, but at least he IS.

I guess my logic is "Why make more when you can improve what you've already got?". Yes, older characters had their run and screentime, but the thing is that Ash remains, and its almost as if he casts off his old friends when he tires of them, like how a person gets a new phone just because it has a new feature even if his old one works perfectly fine. Obviously that is NOT true, since May and Misty had definite reasons for leaving and Ash HASN'T forgotten them, but it kind of also makes me think that the writers are expecting us to forget the older older ones, and considering the huge fanbases that the older characters command that isn't the case. I just can't help the feeling that older characters still have their use in the story.

The anime producers cater first to the new fans and then to the old, hence why sometimes I just wish that they would end each arc with its own set of characters and start anew, like how Digimon made their seasons, except of course with Pokemon always remaining in the same universe. That way, new characters can be created and developed and it leaves a possibility for old-character cameos or guest appearances without leaving old fans constantly hoping for their favorites to show up.

You gotta remember the main goal of the anime is to promote the games. They're not going to shaft the current Generation's pokemon in favor of ones that already had plenty of screentime. That's the main reason the Johto team is currently the worse handled.

That being said though, I don't see why they can't handle giving Ash more than 5 pokemon per region correctly. Why did Gliscor have to be released, likely to never be seen again, in favor of Gible for example?

This is how I'd set up sagas.

Main saga - would focus on the first two games. Ash and co. would travel around with pokemon from that region.

"Filler" sagas - Would build upon the saga before it. Ash and co. would still travel around with pokemon from the current Generation. A few promotional pokemon from the next Generation may be caught though.

Remake sagas - Sagas for FRLG and HGSS (and whatever other remakes that are created). Ash would use a variety of reserves but in particular he would use pokemon from the Generation which is being remade. Many of these pokemon would become a part of his main traveling team once again and might even evolve if they didn't back in their home region's saga. The story would be a combination of the sidegames quests (Pokemon Ranger, the Orre Region games, etc.) and anime-only material.

My goal would be to make all of the characters memorable. The human characters would all have interesting stories and personalities (even the minor ones) and the main characters pokemon would all have memorable battles and personalities.
