how do you get the national dex in emerald cause i have not yet beaten the e4 and i really want to trade with my fire red i think i read somewhere that you need to catch all 200 to get the national, so do i cause if i have to finish my hoenn dex just to trade with fr i think that is ridiculous

I think i had to go talk to him. (Just incase your expecting him to just walk up to you after you reload from beating the E4)

Beat the Elite 4 and talk to Prof. Birch. I remember I had 100 pokémon caught before he gawe it to me.

i beat the elite four with 40 pokemon and birch gave me the nat. dex. have you got the ruby / sapphire plates on fr?

Obsessive Beader/Mod
You only need to beat the Elite Four, then you'll automatically get the National Dex. You don't need a specific number of Pokemon, that's only for FR/LG.
