Internal Battery

When I start up my game now (I have not played it for years), it tells me "The file data has been destroyed!" Does this mean the internal battery in these games, like that in Gold/Silver/Crystal, can die also, to the detriment of your save file?

Yes they can die, but due to not having an internal clock the R/B game cartridges can last for 15-20 years. Mine is still working! If your battery does die its possible to replace it yourself. There are a few guides online.

Curiously enough, my Gold and Crystal still work, as do my Red and Yellow. I was not aware that there was an internal battery problem with the older games, however; I guess it just never occurred to me, since Generation II has been getting all the hype about that.

Most GSC games batterys have bit it by now, and some of RBYs too, but they're pretty easy to change. I've done several.
DON'T THROW IT AWAY!
If your to stupid to fix it maybe someone else isn't!

It's called the 002 error.

I have never had this happen to me - my Red, Yellow and Silver carts still works with no problems.

Well, how long have you owned the game? The internal battery can also stop in the 3rd, 4th and 5th gens as well as the 1st and the 2nd.

It's only happened to me on Silver. Pokemon red acts strangely, whenever I press A or the control pad it glitches and freezes, but Blue, Yellow, Gold and Crystal work perfectly as they did before.

I have owned Yellow for *thinks* 11-12 years, and Red & Silver for about 10 years. So a looong time, and still fine - I just played it recently too.
