International dubs

Mika_Coyote

Forever learning!
I doubt there are only people from the US here in these forums... So I'm making this topic for all you international Poké-fans! Does your country dub the anime? If it does, is it consistent? Do you like it? In general, what do you think about it? Feel free to post your opinions, views and if you want, maybe some samples of the voices so we can check it out...

I'll talk about the Portuguese dub later(sorry)... For now, on with the show!

A mod can close this if I'm breaking any rules...

In the UK we pretty much get the US dub, except we get some things that aren't edited. Like according to Dogasu's site (I didn't notice this actually) in the UK dub we get the Badge case with the Pokeball on and the US gets the one with the red box thing.

Also in the Harley episode we get a skull but KidsWB edited it with a demented sad face for the US.

So we get a slightly altered US dub over here. But out of the all the things they alter they never altered the incorrect Trainer Choice about Seviper XP

From what I heard, 4Kids started editing that badge case entirely, so it appears in the UK version as well.

Wait yeah I forgot to add in early Hoenn, since in the episode when they got their cases (Ash & May) they were Pokeball smybols. After around errr I think it was Advance Challenge we started getting the edited Badge Case, or was it Advance Battle :/ One of those two series >_>;

But it's the most pointles edit ever o_o;

Oh really?

I'd say the Onigiri/Sub sandwich one was one of the stupidest.

You mean the "Which one of these Pokemon EVOLVE into Seviper? ... If your answer was ARBOK, you're correct!" Pure hogwash, I tell you. Hmmm, but I bet the other dubbed versions aren't as mutilated as ours...

I've watched quite a few episodes of the spanish(mexican) dub, mostly season 1, and season Johto League champions but i've also watched orange islands and johto journey's.

sadly it is a dub of the American version ;/ (mexico usually dubs straight from japan and without edits!), the dub on those 4 seasons at least is extremely good! all the main characters and most secondary characters have great voices, that is why i'm sad the dvds don't include spanish language. Filler characters though usually get bad/generic voices.

I haven't watched master quest or any of Advanced Generation in spanish but i think at least most of the original cast is still there (though VA changes are not that uncommon in long running series..)

I *ahem* USED to watch the Mexican dub, because it stopped showing after Advance Challenge (but they did dub Chronicles).

I love the Mexican James, with all the Mexican related jokes and stuff. For example the TR motto is different every time, with "stars" being changed for a Mexican place:
~ English line - To extend our reach to the stars above
~ Original Mexican line - Y extender nuestro reino hasta las estrellas
- And after a while they started to change "estrellas" to things like "Apatzingán" and "La vecindad del chavo" (from an old, popular Mexican series)

The only thing is that the rest of Latin America (who also gets this same version of the dub) might not get some of the jokes.

And continuity... UH. Since here in Latin America we only get the US version of the Pokemon games (we don't get them translated), the moves don't have "official names" in Spanish (I understand they do in Spain, but they're two different dubs), so they make them all up. That's not an issue really, the issue is that they sometimes forget their own attack names. Razor Leaf used to be "Hojas Navajas", and when Grovyle first appeared in that watermelon episode, Leaf Blade got the name "Hoja Sable". Well, when Ash's Treecko evolved, we got a Leaf Blade named "Hojas Navajas", screwing up both the original Leaf Blade name and the name for Razor Leaf.

But it doesn't matter now. We don't get the Mexican dub anymore. :(

oh yes and James would always go Jamememes :D

hasn't pokemon been off and on since it premiered though? and they were always behind the american dub so is it 100% confirmed you won't get advanced challenge?

Thats something that I've been wondering about. I thought that we simply got the American dub straight over, but after reading Dogasu's site, it surprises me that we have so many differences.

Does it mean that we have our own version of the dub?

The common theory is that KidsWB themselves order additional edits before each episode goes on air, if they deem something too inappropriate for the younger veiwers. They've been doing this sort of thing for years apparantly.
So basically the UK ends up recieving the exact same episodes, yet they're untouched by the hands of the KidsWB censors.

Well, I saw an episode while I was over in Vietnam this summer. Sadly, how it's done over there is a one person narrator who just gives the translation over the lowered original track.

In my opinion, it was very boring to watch but the kids there were fascinated telling me to hush up lol.

Well thats good to know, although we have been getting the pointless edits (the badges box symbol still bothers me)

The german dub is the tranlated dub of the UK I think, because we don´t have the badgecase edit, if I´m correct.

The dub is okay, I like most of the voices.

Brock is one of the best, because he sounds gentle like Takeshi , but can also do his crazy-outbursts godly cool as well.

Misty was top notch as well ( she did our female ranma as well...she has a thing for angry redheads ^^)

Our first Ash was awesome, but they replaced the VA after the third jotho gym..the "new" one sucks badly...The VA can´t do an authentic boy, it just sounds wrong..I think everybody misses the old ash..

Team rocket was always one of my favourites ^^

I found it quite funny when I heard the US mewoth ( mrs. blaustein? ) saying that the german meowth sounds kinda mean XD It´s true sometimes...but not always.

The bad thing..I think our dubbing company got really lazy after jotho, because we had some really bad mistakes in AG, like adressing prof. birk as OAK THE WHOLE EPISODE(!)
or mixing up attacknames ( "psychic" is "psychokinese" in germany, but it is always called "psycho" now for some reasons...) ( or they translated "ember" as "amber" which is "bernstein" instead of "glut" in germany..an idiotic mistake), so they dub 4kids´ mistakes and add their own as well...-.-

May´s and Max voices are medicore at best and the same could be said for all AG pokemon voices..the Kanto pokemon had great voices...
The filler characters and even gymleaders aren´t better...even my beloved team rocket seemed bored in the new episode..the lack of emotion..

The german dub is stuck at the ending of season 7, but we´ll get new ones in the end of this year for sure. I just don´t watch the dub anymore..only a few special episodes..I want to hear the german harley for example.

If anyone wants a clip, http://www.rtl2.de/pokito/59_356.php this is the official page of the channel which airs pokemon in germany..I don´t now if it´s against the rules, because it isn´t a fanpage at all...

Well, I have no idea about the on-and-off part, since I didn't use to watch it very often (due to the inconvenient time of 10:00 at night on weekdays ). So I hope you're right and it'll air eventually.

Anyway, we DID get Advance Challenge (plus Chronicles), but we just got up to that.

Ignoring the attack names slaughtering on the Mexican dub, I find the voice acting slight better than the english dub.

In the Chinchou episode, we got an equivalent to "To extend our reach to El Salvador". =D

Another intersting stuff about the Mexican dub, is that in the last 3 seasons James would sing a verse of a popular song in Mexico or Latin America, instead of saying his last line, "...Or prepare to Fight".

If I recall correctly, that was just back in the days when the local TV channels dubbed the Anime. Since the downfall of that practice, Anime is rarely seen in local channels, if at all anymore, unless they're re-runs of old shows. Most, if not all Anime is now dubbed right from its american version. In some instances, it's OK. In others...

Still... it's been said. The mexican dub was, in my opinion, way funner than the american version. And the voices are infinitely better as well. Also, the tidbits they add in each character are so cool you can never get tired of them. They made the dub awfully bearable. Even enjoyable. Team Rocket are the best, though. Definitely.

The only problem comes with the attacks, as Sika said. I remember two. The most important: Swift's sheer inconsistency. That thing had so many names it's not funny. And them translating "Ember" as "Sorpresa" (Surprise) in AG, yet it was translated correctly in previous seasons... =/

I hope they do retake Pokémon, for I wanted to see the rest. Oh well... was good while it lasted. Though it would've been better had they dubbed the japanese version. I'm 90% sure we would've got each and every banned episode bar the Porygon one, and each and every cutted scene. Dead serious...

We have Cantonese dub in Hong Kong...but let's just say 8 years and we're still in the middle of fillers, slowly crawling towards Blockthorn...They mostly kept the voice actor, but I wish they won't stop for a year or three every 50 episodes. I'm not really looking forward to seeing May speaking Cantonese though.

[SPOIL]No offense to Misty fans, but if anyone thinks Misty is a *****y redhead, then the Cantonese Misty could possibly be a *****y brainless redhead...[/SPOIL]

Max's German voice sounds weird to me, and I don't even know German. Ash's rendition of "Die Melonenmeisterin" also sounds like he's been punched in the head one too many times. Love the clips, though.

A multilingual comparison of Pokemon cries would be so cool. *wistful*

I think Ash sounds so terrible because his VA makes him sound like he´s got a cold...just aweful ^^;

[QOUTE=FlamingRuby] I'd like to hear some international Brock voices...which country has the best Brock voice? [/QUOTE]

http://www.rtl2.de/pokito/59_1226.php this clip has a few german (rocko)brock-lines. I think he´s pretty good, I think his US voice(s) sound way too old. ( if someones interested, you can watch the german yugioh, ranma 1/2 or One piece there as well,nya..but that´s off topic)

I want to hear the french pokemon cries ^^ Should be funny
