Is Ignorance the Root Cause of Fear

Anyway back to subject.

That's what I like to hear!

Anyways, to add to my above post, the Iraq War is a great example of ignorance. First of all, Bin Laden was so angry with the US's dependancy on oil that he hatched several terrorist attacks against the US. This was most likely caused by fear of a US takeover.

Second, Bush said that we went to war because there were "weapons of amss destruction." Well, since 2003, there has been no proof of that. Ignorance and manipulation of the army and people.

Third, we are also over there to place a democratic government in Iraq. That is ignorance at its best. Who are we to say "You have to run your country like this or else we'll shoot you?"

But what it all comes down to is the fact that the US is dependant on this nation (among others) for oil. We aren't too lazy to go to war, but we are too lazy to find alternative and cleaner energy sources. This is fear and conservatism, both of which are born of ignorance.

Are you a genius? Lol you make a great point...

We can't just put ourselves in someone elses shoes? Can't people figure out that we need to understand one another?

Except he wasn't, he was angry at Saudi Arabia turning to the US for assistance during the first Gulf War, instead of his bunch of warriors. Not to mention he saw himself as a big nation slayer. He believed that his defeat of the Soviet Union in Afghanistan brought them down. It didn't take long for him to turn his sights to the US.

Second, Bush said that we went to war because there were "weapons of amss destruction." Well, since 2003, there has been no proof of that. Ignorance and manipulation of the army and people.

Which Bush had no idea knowing of when the war took place. Not to mention Iraq DID have Weapons of Mass Destruction in the past, which why we were searching for them and placing sanctions on them.

Third, we are also over there to place a democratic government in Iraq. That is ignorance at its best. Who are we to say "You have to run your country like this or else we'll shoot you?"

We didn't, we rescued them from a Dictatorship, and then allowed themselves to vote in their own Constitution and hold their own elections. That isn't "You have to run this country like this or else we'll shoot you"

Except we have been trying to find new sources of energy. From Nuclear to Drilling for our own oil. Both of which I believe is banned by Liberals. Just Government should not be financing it unless you want it to end up disastrous, as we saw with the Ethonal Stupidity.

Well, I think it's obvious to people that the only we can actually succeed is if we join together. However, it's difficult for people to tolerate others, especially those who share different morals than they do. See, to tolerate someone means to accept them and deal with them without any resistance or opposition. However, conservative beliefs and fear of letting go of such beliefs gets in the way of tolerance and, in some cases, acceptance.

Exactly. He turned his sights to the US without any actual rational thought.

Thank you for proving my point.

We didn't, we rescued them from a Dictatorship, and then allowed themselves to vote in their own Constitution and hold their own elections. That isn't "You have to run this country like this or else we'll shoot you"

Either way, we forced our way over there and began to impose our ideals on them; ideals which many did not like.

i can understand why nuclear power would be banned, seeing as how it has the potential for dangerous radioactivity. However, drilling for our own oil seeing as how we would remain dependant on that for energy, even though it would still run out. Not to mention, we've only found small oil deposits here, compared to several other countries.

It's so complicated. Tolerance is hard, people have such big egos, their beliefs clash with the beliefs of others, I hope the day comes when people can truely understand each other, then there will be peace...

Exactly. He turned his sights to the US without any actual rational thought.

Depends on what you mean by rational thought, He believed he could bring down another country, and believed that muslims should be defending Saudi Arabia. His mind is twisted no doubt about that, but I wouldn't place his real reasons out of the realm of rational thought.

Either way, we forced our way over there and began to impose our ideals on them; ideals which many did not like.

Except A: Saddam was a threat to our own security with his Bio Weapons and attempted Nuclear Weapons program. Especially with the intel we got that he was working with Al Qaeda. Now granted that turned out to be wrong, but the man was a believed clear and present danger to our security at the time.

B: He was a threat to his own people. This is a undeniable fact, he has killed millions of his own people. To say we should not impose our own ideals on them, is like saying Child Protective Services should not take a abusive father away from his children because they are imposing their ideals on the family.

i can understand why nuclear power would be banned, seeing as how it has the potential for dangerous radioactivity.

Many other countries including France rely heavily on Nuclear Power, the threat it was in the 70s is non existent now.

However, drilling for our own oil seeing as how we would remain dependant on that for energy, even though it would still run out. Not to mention, we've only found small oil deposits here, compared to several other countries.

We havn't been testing the areas because of the drilling bans. That being said we have more than enough to take us off foreign oil. And no matter what we are going to need oil for a long time. We cannot just switch cars and industries over with a flip of a switch. You can either get oil from places like Venezuela and Saudi Arabia, or you can get it off the American Coastline and states while employing your own people, and keeping the money circulating in the country. Why we havn't done it is pure stupidity on the part of so many on the left.

Exactly. He had little/no rational thought.

Except A: Saddam was a threat to our own security with his Bio Weapons and attempted Nuclear Weapons program. Especially with the intel we got that he was working with Al Qaeda. Now granted that turned out to be wrong, but the man was a believed clear and present danger to our security at the time.

This is okay to declare war, but not for us to invade their country and try to spread our politics.

This isn't the business of the US. We had no right to impose our political system on these people. We had a right (maybe) to protect them 9like your CPS example) but not to impose our ideals.

Many other countries including France rely heavily on Nuclear Power, the threat it was in the 70s is non existent now.

Actual, nuclear power still emits radioactivity. Some of it is harmless. Some of it is dangerous.

Well, you said the ban was passed by liberals. It was passed by George H. W. Bush in 1990. And currently, Obama supports limited drilling. Second of all, if we do strike oil deposits here, it will be a long time before it actually becomes of use. Once we find the oil, other countries will be attempting to buy it from us. Not to mention, some oil companies have acres upon acres of land that they didn't drill, and they actually still have the oppurtunity to. Plus, the Natural resources Defense Council said that the oil here wouldn't help consumer prices fall much. they estimated that it would only fall 3-4 cents in the next 15-20 years. They also caution us that it would distract us from finding safer energy sources, as I stated. So, we could drill in those places for the next ten years while implementing new sources of energy. But, ignorance strikes again, and people aren't investing into these safer sources.

And how do you expect us to actually fight the war? Saddam wouldn't move out of his country, and the only way for us to attack him would be to invade his country. As for spreading our politics, as I said before the Iraqis made their own Government, they made their own constitution, and they voted on their own constitution. That isn't spreading our politics.

This isn't the business of the US. We had no right to impose our political system on these people. We had a right (maybe) to protect them 9like your CPS example) but not to impose our ideals.

Except we didn't the Iraqi Constitution has things that we oppose in the way of ideals. But it was created by the Iraqi People, voted on by the Iraqi People. That isn't imposing our ideals as you said. The only thing we did was take out the abuser * Saddam *, which the Iraqi people had no power to do. And then allowed a transition into a fully formed Iraqi Government created and voted in by them.

Actual, nuclear power still emits radioactivity. Some of it is harmless. Some of it is dangerous.

Which we have safeguard after safeguard for.

Well, you said the ban was passed by liberals. It was passed by George H. W. Bush in 1990.

And continued under Clinton, and a Democrat Congress in 2008

And currently, Obama supports limited drilling.

Because he had to if he wanted to get elected. That being said he hasn't done anything really to further it since reaching office.

Second of all, if we do strike oil deposits here, it will be a long time before it actually becomes of use.

Which can take anywhere between a few years to a decade. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to get it.

Once we find the oil, other countries will be attempting to buy it from us.

And we can decide if we wish to sell it or not.

Not to mention, some oil companies have acres upon acres of land that they didn't drill, and they actually still have the oppurtunity to.

Already proven to have little to no oil on that land. If you wish to keep repeating Democrat Talking Points you are going to lose this.

Plus, the Natural resources Defense Council said that the oil here wouldn't help consumer prices fall much. they estimated that it would only fall 3-4 cents in the next 15-20 years.

Based on old numbers. Not to mention a group that supports and I quote "works to protect wildlife and wild places and to ensure a healthy environment for all life on earth." doesn't sound like a group that can provide a un objective view.

They also caution us that it would distract us from finding safer energy sources, as I stated.

Low oil prices that we currently have distract us from finding alternative energy sources. We should not sit around waiting for the price of oil to sky rocket because it gets people wanting to search for alternative means. Not only is that stupid it is destructive.

So, we could drill in those places for the next ten years while implementing new sources of energy. But, ignorance strikes again, and people aren't investing into these safer sources.

Except we have been, problem is that some of those safer sources, such as Ethonal, have turned out to be money wasters. We can invest and drill at the same time, but allowing politics to the situation will keep us in the same horrible situation.

Anyway if you want to continue this, I would suggest taking it up in the Politics thread.

Well,a ccording to former president Bush, one reason whyw e are over there is to set up a democratic government. That is spreading our political system.

Which we have safeguard after safeguard for.

Which is what? Simply separating it from our civilization? It's still out there and it's still dangerous.

And continued under Clinton, and a Democrat Congress in 2008

And continued under Bush and when the Republicans had control of the Senate from 1994-2006. They only lost control because Joseph Lieberman and Bernie Sanders, two independents, were aligned with the Democrats.

Because he had to if he wanted to get elected. That being said he hasn't done anything really to further it since reaching office.

That's because he's focused on the economy and the war: the two things the majority of our country cares the most about right now.

Which can take anywhere between a few years to a decade. That doesn't mean we shouldn't be trying to get it.

It was actually estimated around a decade. But my point is, we can start digging for it now, but if we also further alternatives, by the time we actually get it it would ahrdly have a demand.

Already proven to have little to no oil on that land. If you wish to keep repeating Democrat Talking Points you are going to lose this.

Acres upon acres upon acres upon acres of undrilled and unexamined land. Not to mention, why would oil companies take it if it didn't have oil?

Actually, the EIA said that for the production to reach its peak would take 20 years.

Low oil prices that we currently have distract us from finding alternative energy sources. We should not sit around waiting for the price of oil to sky rocket because it gets people wanting to search for alternative means. Not only is that stupid it is destructive.

Oh look, we agree on something.

Well,a ccording to former president Bush, one reason whyw e are over there is to set up a democratic government. That is spreading our political system.

Except that is more simplistic, we had no idea if they were going to sit up a Democratic Government, a Communistic Government * One of the members on the Constitutional Committee was a Communist * or any other Government. Part about being a Democracy is allowing the people to set up their own Government. We could only hope they would make the right choice.

Which is what? Simply separating it from our civilization? It's still out there and it's still dangerous.

Built in Technological Safeguards and Human Safeguards. Which is why it is run so smoothly in so many countries.

And continued under Bush and when the Republicans had control of the Senate from 1994-2006. They only lost control because Joseph Lieberman and Bernie Sanders, two independents, were aligned with the Democrats.

As well as extended by Clinton via Executive Order during his Presidency.

That's because he's focused on the economy and the war: the two things the majority of our country cares the most about right now.

Funny how he had just enough time to block offshore drilling plans.

It was actually estimated around a decade. But my point is, we can start digging for it now, but if we also further alternatives, by the time we actually get it it would ahrdly have a demand.

The far shelf drilling is around a decade, closer to the shoreline can be done in months if not a couple of years, same with Alaska and the tarsands. That being said saying we can switch over in a decade is naive at best. Yes we may have a better energy supply by then, but that is just hopeful thinking. Not to mention that it would take several decades just to phase out a majority of cars and business equipment that rely on Oil.

Acres upon acres upon acres upon acres of undrilled and unexamined land. Not to mention, why would oil companies take it if it didn't have oil?

Well why not ask the oil companies

But the nation’s oil producers say Pelosi is being disingenuous, because federal regulations restrict their exploration on the leased land, while much of the 68 million acres is already “tapped out” of oil.

There is very little oil out there, especially compared to the lucrative lands that are restricted

As for why the oil companies take it? Because its like the gold rush, you are guessing there is oil there, and you hold on to it on the off chance that oil is found there. Even though there is a major possibility that it is just empty land.

Actually, the EIA said that for the production to reach its peak would take 20 years.

Which is a guess, seeing how technology continues to advance, and allowing offshore drilling would cause a explosion of creativity to get the oil as fast as we can. Saying it will actually take twenty years, is only a guess based on past or present technology and not a realistic expectation of what could happen.

Why? This is all stemming from ignorance, the topic of this thread.

The only ignorance shown so far is when you said that Osama Bin Laden attacked the US because he believed a US Takeover would happen and our dependence on oil. This is a political argument through and through and it has no place in this thread.

Now, with that said, what do you think? I think that this is exactly correct, and I must say, has opened up my eyes.
The unknown (better known as the "different") is the single biggest cause of fear out there. It's not quite the same as ignorance though, because ignorance usually only suggests willful unknowing.

Yes, but they are willfully not learning about these things. I used to fear bears, but I saw the Stranger Among Bears show on Animal Planet, and now I do not fear them at all.

The Dodos didn't fear the unknown, and look what happened to them. :p

Yes, the unknown is one of the key causes of fear. The key is to not let this fear rule you and to seek to understand this new unknown which has presented itself. (From a safe distance. :p)

Thank God for ignorance.

If it wasn't for ignorance, I don't think I could live each day. I don't want to understand absolutley everything in this world, nor do I need to. I think there are somethings that really are better left misunderstood.

Fused what am I going to do with you...

Anyways, to add to my above post, the Iraq War is a great example of ignorance. First of all, Bin Laden was so angry with the US's dependancy on oil that he hatched several terrorist attacks against the US. This was most likely caused by fear of a US takeover.

How about, um, the actual reason he stated he was mad at us? Osama Bin Laden was angry because we stationed American troops in Saudi Arabia during the first gulf war. The anger was over "Poisoning sacred Muslim soil" not fear of us coming in and kicking their ass America style.

Second, Bush said that we went to war because there were "weapons of amss destruction." Well, since 2003, there has been no proof of that. Ignorance and manipulation of the army and people.

That's what our intelligence said at the time. It's also what Russian and British intelligence said at the time. There were also over 20 different countries that offered troops in the brink of invasion. It was hardly a willful act of distortion or maliciousness as you try to paint it. Further more, even if Sadaam did have them, I doubt we would be able to find them because we sure did give him a lot of time before we went in.

Third, we are also over there to place a democratic government in Iraq. That is ignorance at its best. Who are we to say "You have to run your country like this or else we'll shoot you?"

We set up a democratic government because we didn't want to deal with Iraq again. There was that whole scrap in 1991, we didn't want to invade then have to come in and clean house 10 years later again. Oh, and there was that whole violating fly zones thing. It also has nothing to do with one country imposing it's idealogy on another. It had everything to do with Sadaam violating U.N. sanctions, flyzones, and having suspected nucleur weapons. I simply will not have anyone spouting BS about how America was really just wanting to be the big dog and flexing it's muscles in an attempt to spread our own idealogy for political reasons.

But what it all comes down to is the fact that the US is dependant on this nation (among others) for oil. We aren't too lazy to go to war, but we are too lazy to find alternative and cleaner energy sources. This is fear and conservatism, both of which are born of ignorance.

You are an idiot.

I'm seeing quite a bit of ignorance in this thread, lol. IMO ignorance can be a good thing, but more often than not, it's bad. As for the topic, I don't think ignorance is the root cause of fear, rather just one of the other causes.

Ignorance, or knowledge? Ignorance... or knowledge? In my case, the more I learned about certain events and ideas, the more alarmed I became as I realized their significance. A certain level of curiosity may very well be helpful in alleviating this ignorance, letting the person's reactions progress as they will. Overall, one can assume that I opine that fear based on knowledge may be even more powerful than fear based on ignorance, so that ignorance is not the root cause of fear at all.

Hmmm, well, that's an interesting theory. But think about it; you look at a tarantula, it's hairy, pink, and you think it could kill you. You then learn it is harmless. Your knowledge got rid of the fear.

On the other hand, you learn about terrorism. You understand more and more their plans, and you become afraid.

But again, you can learn all about the precautions we have in order to block them from doing those terrible things. It's a paradox, I suppose....

This simply isn't true. Are you ignorant for fearing a wolf posed at your throat? What about a gun held at your temple? These things can very well be feared.

Edit: Oh whoops. Looks like I didn't read the second page before posting. I just posted an idiot's comment in a large debate. Smooth.
