I understand that Naruto is a very popular series, but popular does not mean good. At least for the U.S dub. Naruto's voice is so mother f'ing annoying. It's almost as bad as Luffy's in One Piece. It also seems to have a very generic plotline and from i've seen brings almost nothing new to the anime universe. I mean, it's not even funny.
YEAH! [/Is one of those who is tired of the mindless drones praising shounen series.]
Maybe i'm just getting too old for Toonami-esque anime. But, after you've been showered with the anime gods that are Cowboy Bebop, Evangelion, Trigun, Gundam, Fullmetal Alchemist, Love Hina, Hellsing, Excel Saga, Ghost In The Shell, etc. etc. some stuff just doesn't seem as good.
Take out
Love Hina and
Hellsing, and I'll be in agreement there. Though, I wouldn't exactly call them "anime gods," but rather the upper tier as far as anime goes.

Love Hina? Gundam? Anime gods? You must be joking.
The whole love-comedy schtick doesn't really add much that hasn't been done before.
I'm sure as hell not defending
Love Hina by saying this, but just because something is done that has been done before doesn't mean it to not be good. It disgusts me when I see people look at an anime and talk about originality being a big factor when it is so damn hard to find that nowadays. Hell, ever since with modern literature's start with Shakespeare, it is hard to find originality nowadays, let alone with quality.
That said, don't base on whether something is good or not based on originality, but rather on execution and direction. Thankfully,
Love Hina does this poorly. 8D
And the whole giant robots thing is already overdone. Gundam recently hasn't been impressive in the slightest bit.
Recently, yes, although I do wonder whether he is referring to the franchise as a whole, or else he is citing back to the original series... in which case, if you deny that the original
Mobile Suit Gundam isn't one of the most important anime created, then you're a fool.
Besides, you're comparing shows of completely different genres all together.
Doesn't mean that you can't compare quality. Just because shounen series are aimed at a younger audience doesn't mean that they can't be good. If something is bad, then it's bad.

*sigh* Think about it this way.
Naruto was a refreshing series for Anime all together. If it wasn't for this show, then imagine what Anime would be now.....
...
Naruto isn't a "refreshing series" by any stretch of the imagination. It didn't "influence" any anime or have the same impact in the way that
Mobile Suit Gundam,
Cowboy Bebop,
Neon Genesis Evangelion, and
Akira did.
It's highly overrated, but it's a very nice series. It's only hypes because of 4 select time periods:
Zabuza/Haku arc
Chunin exam/Sasuke retrevial arcs
Naruto vs. Sasuke-Failed Mission
Naruto II-Time jump (hasn't happened in the anime yet)
That's pretty much it. The highlights of the naruto-verse, and why everyone is in love with the show.
It is an enjoyable series for those that like shounen series, but for those who are actually looking for good quality, then they won't be "in love with the show" like you claim.
Edward Elric said:
Naruto is more shounen than anything. Trigun's targeted for a slightly older crowd. See where I'm coming from here?
That still doesn't concern quality, Chris. I mean, hell,
My Neighbor Totoro is an anime movie aimed for children, and is the perfect family movie, but does that mean that it's bad? No, it is regarded as something brilliantly conceived, and even though I'm not one of those Miyazaki marks, I can understand why.

Best anime ever would either go to Evangelion or Fullmetal Alchemist. And FMA was recently voted the best anime of all-time in Japan...
It's all in the matter of subjective opinions when it comes to what the best anime is. However, it can be said that
Evangelion does belong on the upper tier of anime, as well as
Fullmetal Alchemist belonging to the upper tier of shounen anime.
Edward Elric said:
Evangelion within itself is rather..out there. Not exactly "Best Anime Ever" material as the plot seems to change back and forth. One moment it tries to follow a story, the next it starts discussing the human psyche. Hell, I was completely lost by the end of the series due to the change it went through. I didn't know anymore if I was watching a show about giant robots tearing crap apart or a show about an emo boy who's constantly doubting himself and envisioning a better life with people around him trying to praise him.
I think somebody got confused and missed the point of it. 8D
Looking at it subjectively, I can understand why you wouldn't hold it in high regard. Same thing for me with a movie like
Citizen Kane (mind you I did like the movie, but I don't hold it personally dear to me). Looking at it objectively, though, dude,
Evangelion does belong up there with some of the best anime ever created. It revolutionized not only how many following anime were done, but also how the business was done and to a lesser degree, how anime was handled on television. The specific parts of the plot are hard to swallow if you're going to be a casual viewer just sitting down and watching it, but therein lies the problem: you need to be attentive when watching something like that. You familiar with the term "avant garde"? Anime takes advantage of this well often enough, and
Evangelion does this particuarly well.
Plus, I didn't know that somebody was labeled "emo" when they're a fourteen-year-old boy who is suddenly put in the position to save the world. Believe it or not, some people might not like to do it! Oh, and did you know that that is a realistic approach to things? Really!
Fullmetal's vote is really on a fanbase vote, really. :s
Meh, it saddens me to know that it will be forever known for the anime and not the manga.
Naruto's not even the best in its own category for ninja shows. The hell kinda ninjas wear orange clothes, have pink hair, or leave their faces visible to their enemies (excluding Zabuza and Kakashi)?
Naruto wishes that it was
Ninja Scroll.

I belive the anime is overrated, there are so many fillers it's rediculous. the manga is awesome.
You make
Hunter X Hunter fans cry out in anger. And the manga, despite being devoid of the fillers, is just as bad.

Also, crap like Love Hina, Excel Saga, Hellsing, and Gundam aren't anime gods.
Hold your tongue, child. Sure, there is occasional crap like
Gundam Seed and
G Gundam, but the franchise itself is so much more than that.
And also, what's so bad about insane humor and parodies, huh?
Excel Saga is aware of itself, and takes great lengths to parody nearly countless things. (Though, I have yet to see the anime myself.)
Monster, Mushishi, Kino's Journey, and Gankutsuou are, though.
I'm not familiar enough with
Gankutsuou, but it makes me smile knowing that there are people here other than myself and TSC who actually look for quality in anime.
