Is Paul a hypocrite?

During the President's Day marathon I overheard somethign Paul said int the episode Chim - Charred!

He said "A loss is the trainer's fault" that just doesn't seem like something he would say.
To hear the quote for yoruself, go [link removed], he'll say it 38 seconds in.
The way he releases Pokemon for being weak I thought he put all the blame on them. I can't imagine him admitting to being anything less that perfect but wouldn't that mean he has to admit to being the person to blame for his loses?

Like Azumarill loosing to Roark's Geodude
(Seriously, if he said that, and lost a match up like that, than he should have a very low opinion of himself.)

Thats a really good point never thought of it before, but it's totally correct!

I wonder whether they forgot about what had been placed in those episodes or whether they decided to do it in on purpose for the next encounter where maybe they will bring it up again and show that Paul is starting to change a little.

I hoe that this does finally get answered by the Dub, so that we can have another dimension to Paul and the sho!

He probably meant that a loss was the trainer's fault in that the trainer hasn't trained their Pokemon properly.

*uses the word train too much*

God forbid that Paul would actually feel compassionate!

Well I guess that's true about him. But of course he's going to blame everything on Ash. xP I mean, it is mostly the trainer's fault that their Pokemon are weak.

I just think Paul (ugh ..I hate using some english names xD) is too lazy and gets way too irritated with the smaller, weaker Pokemon, so if they don't get strong enough by a certain time, he'll forget about them and let them go.

Paul is just a badass. That's why I like him.

Yes, I've always wondered why Ash never said anything about that. Paul always acts like he is so superior but there is something that could make Ash look so good and leave Paul maybe doubting himself and a little more humble.

Paul: You're so weak *Releases a Pokemon*
Ash: I see you're at it again, when will you learn
Paul: Step off you naive noob, you don't know anything, you're an awful trainer
Ash: You know what Paul, you're the awful trainer! You want Pokemon to be automatically strong because you lack the skill to make them strong. You abandon Pokemon who you deem weak cause...lets face it, you suck! We're called trainers for a reason! You want to catch already powerful Pokemon and pretend you accomplished something when you're nothing but a poser!
Paul:....

Even he can't beat that logic

Wow, that speech started off cheesy, but it ended off funny.

And I would like to see Paul's face when he goes up against Ash's BF team.

If the show wasn't directed towards kids, and instead teens, I think this would fit Ash saying this perfectly. I'd liked to see the attitude by him. :)

LOL At the above comment.
Paul doesn't just fight with strong Pokemon, in Roark's battle he sent out Elekid and Chimchar, two Pokemon who are VERY weak to Rock pokemon, yet he sent them out because he believed they were strong from the training and stuff.

I doubt he truly believes in that philosophy 100%. He probably just said that to annoy Ash. That seems to be his favourite hobby.

Well Paul has been a thorn in Ash's side ever since he mocked Ash's Starly. Although he usually mocks Ash, Paul did treat Maylene quite badly when he completely swept her team.

In retrospect, it does seem strange that he didn't just send out his Torterra and storm through it. He actually wanted to challenge his pokemon

In some cases, guys, Paul can be a hypocrite now and then, but who isn't? Like his saying to Ash in Chim-Charred he did what Paul did in the Tag Battle at the Wallace Cup, while Ash was also trying to have fun besides putting Buizel through his paces to help him.

Though with Paul, he's not wrong about what he said. In some cases, even if he'll never admit it, it's his fault many of his Pokemon have lost, because he either underestimated his opponent, or didn't train said Pokemon enough, like with Azumarill vs. Roark.

I totally felt that comment was hypocritical of him. It's probably part of what got Chimchar so mad at him. I mean, did Paul ever act like any issues were his fault back when he was training the little guy? Nope.

hmmm, if you don't have anything to contribute, please don't post in this or any other thread, or I will talk to a mod about your spamming.

I think Paul sees his released Pokemon as reflections of his own failures. And when you consider he grew up in Reggie's shadow, he just throws away Pokemon that aren't good enough.

One of the things I hate about the third generation games is that Electrike is the first Electric-type Pokemon available, and you have to struggle training it until it learns Spark at level... what was it, 17? This is especially difficult if you're trying to raise your team evenly, a practice which I've adopted in every game since I realized my weakened Venusaur couldn't win against my rival, and at the time I was too naive to even think about purchasing Full Restores and conserving my PP-restoring items, but that's a story for another post.

Anyway, once Electrike finally learns Spark, and eventually evolves into Manectric, it becomes one of your core Pokemon, and you can't help but feel a sense of pride and accomplishment when you think back on how it was a ***** to train.

That's what Paul fails to understand about Pokemon. You can't just cruise your way through battles. Pokemon are strong because they and their Trainers earn that strength through hard work, frustration, and never giving up.

Come to think of it, Paul's like Sasuke Uchiha in a way. Sasuke vowed that he wouldn't gain power by obtaining the Mangekyo Sharingan (which he did anyway, completely destroying his whole character), but through Orochimaru's training.

It's the same thing with Paul. Reggie treated his Pokemon with kindness and worked with them to become strong. Paul obviously decided that Reggie was wasting time with that kind of training, so he chose to catch only the most powerful Pokemon he could find. In short, both Paul and Sasuke chose a different path from their brothers, and it seems to be working. But that doesn't mean it's right.

He was just saying it to hurt Ash's feelings.

Besides, the writers probably had a brain fart or something and that was the entire cause of this. Or maybe there's a secret explanation. Or maybe we shouldn't worry too much about this.

DAMN! That is pretty accurate. I think too a lot of Paul's attitude comes from seeing Reggie's successes in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and even in the Battle Frontier.

Paul's not a man of his word. I don't hold him up to it for few reasons:

1) Translations skew the dialogue.
2) We just don't know what lines/events might get GS ball'd next. (Azumarill in this case)
