is the Wii's backwards compatibility region-free?

OK, I've heard some conflicting things in the past... some people said the Wii's not region-free, someone said it is region-free but the games themselves have region coding, and in any case, I haven't seen anything from an official source.

The Wii is out now, but it got released here a bit before the rest of the world, so I guess it's pointless to be asking for confirmation from someone who actually has it. However, for now, if there're any Wii-owners who've imported in the past, could you tell me if it's able to play foreign Game Cube games or not?

Popped in Battle Stadium D.O.N. Will not recognize the disc.

Also, OFFICIAL CONFIRMATION HERE. Inserting FreeLoader to attempt running GameCube imports on the Wii will NOT work. It will be unable to read the disc.

So those of you who play imports for GameCube, don't sell off your GameCube.

Update: Seems you CAN use import GameCube titles on the Wii as long as you have a FreeLoader. Just be sure to boot the console up with the FreeLoader already inside, rather than starting it from the disc channel. When it asks to remove the disc, simply eject it and swap discs. :x

Second Update: Appears it doesn't work for a lot of people, either, including myself. Will update when it's figured out.

I've read from another forum that there are two (or maybe three) different brands of freeloaders, and only one of them works.

Here is the one that works:

Here is the one that doesn't:

Negatory as people who even have the same version as the person who's said it works have pointed out it not working.
