I would only use it for getting jiarchi,deoxys,mew and celebi.

if it messes your game up for good then I'm not gonna do it.

I learned the hard way. Never use it on Emerald. It's ok on R/S, but not on Emerald!

Emerald and FR/LG are well-protected from Cheats. You can try them, but they won't work as expected. I tried using some Pokémon Maker codes in Emerald, and they worked fine at first. But afterwards, all I got were Bad Eggs (Just turn the game off...). Warping codes worked perfectly, though.

If you're not sure on how to use the device, don't use it. Also, double check the codes before activation...

I don't encourage cheating, but if you feel like it for the most harmless/fair stuff (Infinite TMs, Event Pokémon and such.), then go for it. Just be careful, and all will be fine.

Even though that this topic is against the rules, I just wanna say that I once made a file on my Emerald and tried out some of my friends Action Replay cheats. They don't do any harm. It's Gameshark that does.
