I've never played a zelda game before..

Who can say?
Yeah, as each game can be played separatly without knowlege of previous games. I for one played Wind Waker before Orcarina of Time...
This is what I found, playing WW before OoT...

1) Gameplay will be explained (and of course the Wii version playes in a totally new way anyway).

2) Story. Each game sort of has its own story and the games are set appart. For example the Links and Zeldas in Orcarina of Time, Wind Waker and Twilight Princess are different people in different time periods. Any important aspects of previous games that are needed for the story will be explained to you as the game progresses. (This happend in Wind Waker- the story takes place after Orcarina -e.g the game's opening gives a basic account of the tale of Orcarina of Time).

The only thing you might find is that you miss some small references to past games (not important to plot) such as, oh I dunno, in Wind Waker there is a temple with stain glass windows of impotrant characters from Orcarina, but that acts more as a bonus to people who know them. These will be things you might come across if, after playing Twilight, you choose to get a copy of Wind Waker for example. (As I did- early Wind Waker games came with OoT- which I played after) Otherwise you won't really be affected by them anyway.

If you are considering getting Twilight Princess I would recomend it, there is a reason why the Zelda series is so respected in the world of gaming...

I'd say the Ocarina of Time Link & Zelda are the same as the ones in Twilight Princess - but who knows. Similar Character models I guess but instead of it just being a sequel it's more like a "New" game. But Phantom Hourglass looks like a definate sequel to Wind Waker since it's the same graphic style.

I would go ahead and get Twilight Princess. I also recommend The Minish Cap for GBA and ofcourse Ocarina of Time for N64.

The game takes place between WW and OoT, but 'decades after Orcarina' and 'a long time before Wind Waker'.And it is an all new Link. Granted I'm just taking this from Wikipedia but I'm sure I've read that in various mags, the Official Nntendo Magazine (UK) as well. However most would have you belive this game is set after WW as well, but it seems not. Majora's Mask is, as far as I know, the only direct sequel.

Then again, there are differing opinions as to the cronology and time line of Zelda's story.

But yes, you are right similar character models due to fans prefering OoT's style over the cel shaded WW. I think it also has something to do with Link's age: WW = child so cartoon like. TP = Teenager = dark/realistic.

Yes, the GBA games should be noted, as they too are brilliant. A first time player should note however that the console and handheld games play differently due to being in a more top-down view (at least current ones not inc. Phantom Hourglass) but still incorperate Zelda's signiture gameplay features. (action and puzzle)

There's also Minish Cap and the Four Swords games.

Personally, I suggest you get yourself a copy of Wind Waker and, if you can, Ocarina of Time. There two games alone will be more than enough to understand Zelda. Oh and maybe A Link to the Past (GBA) as well :)

Well, I was never really that keen on Minish Cap. It felt like there was something missing for me, although I am not sure what. I have to say, the Oracle games (Ages and Seasons) are absalutly fantastic IMO. Graphically, it is not all that good, but the game itself is great.

I also recommend Majora's Mask. Well, if you can, get the Collectors Edition for the GC.

Twilight Princess will work very well as its own game.

And that's the important thing. Despite being one of the biggest Zelda-nuts here on SPPf, I only actually came into the series from Wind Waker. I completely understood the storyline of the game. From there I went back and played Ocarina of Time, Legend of Zelda, Link to the Past, Minish Cap, Link's Awakening. In that order. So, I've yet to play Adventure of Link, Oracle of Ages/Seasons and Majora's Mask.

Twilight Princess looks set to have a killer story within the game so don't worry about it at all!

twilight will be good, but play some of the old roms first, just to see if you like it.

Ocarina, Windwaker and Majora's Mask are my favorites. If you have the extra cash, I'd reccomend buying one of these games before Twilight Princess.

I would say that they are adventure games. But, I find it hard to say what genre game it is.

Like I said, try and get a copy of the collectors edition. That way you can see what WW is like through the Demo, and play on the original 2 Zelda's as well as both N64 ones.

Legend Of Zelda to Legend or Zelda 2
Wind Waker to Phantom Hourglass
Ocarina of Time to Majora's Mask

The above titles are all direct sequels I believe. I remember reading somewhere that Nintendo had stated it. Can't remember where though.

I came into Zelda with the Minish Cap. Great game. There literally is no reason not to get Twilight Princess for either the Wii or Gamecube. (preferably the Wii). If you want to play a Zelda game before you get Twilight Princess, try and scrape up the money and purchase the Collector's Edition. It has the Legend of Zelda, The Legend of Zelda 2: Links Adventure, Ocarina of Time, and Majora's mask. It also has a demo of the Wind Waker on it. I got mine for $41 off Ebay, but I have seen them at places like Gamestop. I'm not so sure on the price there. If you don't have a lot of money, go for the Minish Cap of A Link to the Past for GBA. New or used will be cheaper than the Collector's Edition. And yes, even if you havn't played a Zelda game before, you'll understand almost everything. The things you won't understand will be small tidbits to past games.

um no dude the Zelda franchise takes your hand and walks you threw the storyline with everygame reintroducing you to the characters/settings, the only thing you might not get is the little tidbits they throw here and there...like the Sages names and the Zelda: II names.
