Japanese Games+American System?

Okay, I was wondering if anybody has ever bought a Japanese game, then tried to put it in a US bought DS, or oter Nintendo system. Does it work?
I want to know because I'm thinking about asking "Santa" for a Green version or a Japanese Naruto game (because I'm impatient and can't wait for the Sasuke Retrieval Arc Naruto games to come out. :p)

Awesome! So if I learn some Japanese (which I do know a little) I'll be all set. Thanks!

Nintendo hand-held consoles are all region free, but everything else is region locked.

A Wii is region-locked, so it won't play any games from any territory other than the one that the console is made for. In most cases you'll be NTSC, so PAL and NTSC-J won't play on your console. If you're PAL, both NTSC formats won't play it.

All handhelds are region-free.

Which Nintendo's consoles are region-locked?

NES
SNES
N64
GameCube
Wii

All of those are region locked.

However, the handheld division is completely region free, as already mentioned.
