Japan's Top 100 Games of All Time

This list gets better recognition and merit than the typical lists compiled by 1Up, Gamespy, or GameSpot due to the fact that this is data is a reflection of a market that isn't the English-speaking Western market that we're a part of.

Just take a look at that list. Most of the games listed are role-playing games and/or games developed by Japanese developers. This data tells us numerous things about the electronic gaming market in Japan and certainly reflects attudinal differences between us and them. They don't like action games as much as we do, they certainly don't like first person shooters as much as we do, a market loyalty or dynasty appears to exist with Japanese developers as they do with foreign developers, and they really seem to like their RPGs.

It certainly explains why the X-Box 360 or PC gaming, both having strong Western predilections, isn't doing as well in Japan as they are across the Pacific...

But ugh. Final Fantasy X the best game of all time? Jesus Christ. Thanks Famitsu. You have just gave me enough evidence indicating to me that the market you serve have terrible tastes in electronic entertainment. :(

It saddens me when they place FFX and FFVII in the top two spots and FFX ends up beating out Kingdom Hearts. If anything KH should have toppled FFX. :|

Glad to see at least Chrono Trigger and FFIX are in there.

The reason KH didnt get so high up in the charts because, the camera sucked. Well that and probably because people thought the Disney characters ruined everything. However, it really doesnt matter what the charts say, as long as you enjoy the game. The question is... how did FFX get up there?

Do you think that Japan cares that there's Disney characters in there? I thought they loved Disney...

If Tales of Phantasia and Symphonia didn't even make the list, and all of those other did, those must own... unless they've forgotten about them.

I'm surprised to see a game like GTA: VC on the list at all! That's pretty shocking.

But FFX? Please... even if it's good, it's not the best game ever.

Yeah the Japanese loved it. I remember on the news they were interviewing Japanese consumers why they arent purchasing 360 and they said it didnt even have GTA. Its just a stereotype and assumption. Keep in mind though the people reading famitsu are just the hardcore. I'm sure there are more casuals and if you count the new nongamers coming in whom I doubt read famitsu. Although I didnt think Japan is truly this much of a RPG fanatic. I know theyre said to be but America is said to be an FPS fanatic but when compared to many major sites lists such as 1up and ign there list was wide and varied. IGN had the editors list of top 100 and readers top 100 in both they considered LoZ OoT to be the #1 game. They also had alot of different games they had FF, Halo, Mario, Pokemon, GTA, Metroid/prime, Legend of Zelda, Mortal Combat, SSB, MGS, Dragon Quest, etc. Looking at this list SE might as well get into the console business and most of their games will be bought. Just looking at the top 10 its crazy.

Why is Kingdom Hearts ranked 19th, when its sequel, Kingdom Hearts II, which improves everything from the first game, ranked 29th?0_o

It's also strange that the only 5 games that Famitsu ever gave a pefect 40/40 didn't make the top 10, except for The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. That's something I just noticed.:p

Final fantasy IX should've surpassed Kingdom Hearts, but it sadly didn't. At least it surpassed Kingdom Hearts II. Now that is shocking. Besides, who likes Shooter Games and such? I dislike the Xbox and most titles for that system. Kingdom Hearts II should've surpassed the original, IMO.

I think that KH should have gotten much higher on the list. And KH2 should have gotten higher than the orignal. KH2 is way better in almost every way. Almost because of the lack of Neverland. I loved Neverland they could have done so much more with that place this time like oh I dont know, Explore Neverland and get out of the stupid boat.

Kingdom Hearts was alright with the story, but it shouldn't have gotten as far as it did compared to other games in the Final Fantasy series. Kingdom Hearts I & II should've been after most of the Final Fantasy series, preferrably IX. How else should I put it?

Final Fantasy > Kingdom Hearts

Besides, Tetsuya Nomura directing it means biasism on putting specific Final Fantasy characters into the game. Also, many of the Final Fantasy characters he did put in the game took away the Fantasy feel it should've given.

Probably just me going nuts about this, but would you please, for crying out loud, stop saying that Japan, or "the most influential Japanese gaming market" has horrible tastes in entertainment? Seriously. I don't care if FFX sucked, it's what they liked, and it's what they voted for. It's like WinterSnowBlind going on a tangent about GameFaqs.com's users suck because most of them voted on FFVII.
It just boggles my mind that the market you're defending prefers using their PCs to play adult dating sim games rather than Civilization IV or World of Warcraft. It just boggles my mind that the market you're defending has a top one hundred list that has a single genre as the absolutely dominating genre in entertainment software whereas other genres get the shaft. It just boggles my mind that the market you're defending is oh-so biased and loyal to Japanese companies while foreign companies get snubbed and barely a chance to survive.

I find it unfortunate that this poll reinforced my Japanese console RPG gamer stereotype that I so wanted to get out of my mind.

Then again, this is Famitsu. Maybe it's just Famitsu. I certainly hope that's the case.

heh.... Dragon Quest III's in 3rd. Guess it would place high after its popularity caused an incident which lead to a new law concerning its franchise being placed in the Japanese Diet. But just what the hell makes Final Fantasy X and VII so special that they could top an accomplishment like that?

And this is interesting.... Final Fantasy VI and IX, my (and quite a few other people here's) two favorite games of the franchise, are right next to eachother. But dammit, they both placed friggin low... I mean, mid-20s is good, but compared to where most of the other Final Fantasy games placed, that sucks.

KH =/= Final Fantasy. Just cause there's FF characters in it doesn't make it an FF game. o_O Camera problems aside, the game is DEFINATELY better than the rubbish X. Better visual, better voice acting, gameplay was unique and more fun to play. Not to mention, mini-games that weren't so damn confusing or boring (Blitzball? *yawn*)

So true. KH2 should have been number 1, or else higher than it was. Both KH games should be at the top.

Umm guys

I think the Final Fantasy series is extremely overrated. I like RPG's and all but it shouldn't dominate the ****ing market...

Come on, no Nintendo games in the top except for LOZ - what kind of **** is that? Sonic at 41 and Pokemon Red & Green at 51 - *******s.

I for one don't like the Japanese people's ideas of just predominantly Square Enix games in the top 10...

No offense Scott, but you've probably never tried a Final fantasy game not on a Nintendo console... The games are up there for a reason.

Alchemist - I've played those damn games and they are not very fun. In my opinion I thought Golden Sun was one of the best RPG's I've ever played.

Final Fantasy is highly overrated and so cliché.

Another thing is that Japan, they think that Violence shouldn't take away the game. That is why GTA didn't make it high (if on the list). They however adore RPG's. LoZ on the other hand was good, but lacked a RPG real. RE didn't make it high either because of this.

What boggles my mind is that you can't accept the fact that another market likes another genre over what you like and that one category dominates the other. Look at America, most of their top games are action oriented, even games like WoW are action oriented. America likes action action action.

And when did foreign companies suffer? Last thing I noticed is that the US has a sizable gaming market in and of itself that rivals the movie and television industry (not combined, of course).

Really now. Maybe Japan should've never thrown a single console or game into the foreign market.

And you're also speaking of a culture that digs on literature moreso than here. Pretty much anyone I knew that was in the range of elementary to high school in Japan was either into manga, games, or both.

Shouldn't you just move back to Japan then? I like RPG's and I like action. It also seems like you're comparing America to Japan, which are both entirely different like you said. I could say the same thing on manga and games, but that's not really fair since the Japanese came up with it all.
