It's not learning a new move so soon after Sparkling Aria

You may want to watch that match again

Mallow and Lana tag-teamed a pokémon that didn't fight back until it hit its head, then rendered them both unable to battle with Confusion, so they'd have lost if Psyduck had been allowed to continue

It wasn't a fair battle or good showing for either of them
What do you mean? Lycanroc learned Stone Edge and Counter in the span of three episodes.

New preview didn't show much aside from Faba starring creepily through a fence for some reason. Also I guess the implication was that Meltan wasn't Ash's first choice

One's a main character and the other only exists while Ash is in Alola and will never show up again?

Unless S&S keeps the Alolan gang, turning it into SM's Battle Frontier/Orange Islands, because all of Team Rocket's pokémon, and Bewear, exist in the Galar region, and Rotom is sticking around too
But what does that have to do with learning moves?

I don't even think a new move for Primarina is likely, but Soph's Vikavolt got Signal Beam and Zap Cannon in the span of five episodes, plus a new move for Togedemaru just two episodes later. And Primarina has had Sparkling Aria since 123 at the latest.

Exactly, context is an important thing, Suiren was just trying to master it to improve her SeaGod Symphony Z-Move, notice how when she first uses it the bubble is kind of smaller compared to her mentor’s, likely because the base move (Sparkling Aria) wasn’t completely perfected until she sparred with Mamane. She wouldn’t have been able to use the Z-Move in the first place if Ashirene did not have it in her arsenal.
