I don't think we'll see Paul, Barry, Rowan, Dawn etc here. They are more likely to show up during the semi-finals (As they have a stronger connection to Ash).
We'll most likely see cameos from maybe Flint and Volkner (Or some of the Sinnoh Elite four) this episode.

I think people need to realize the writers wouldn't attack their own series like that. Team Rocket is merely speaking in the context of themselves blasting off and not wanting to remember these kind of moments.

It's a series for kids, not some deep literature they're somehow "ashamed of", whatever that means.

To me it seems to be because they felt like a completely different persona in BW that they forgot

Well said. People are obviously projecting their own dislike for BW on a piece of dialogue and acting like the writers feel the same.

I personally interpreted that line as TR not recognizing Iris in her Champion outfit as one of the brats but her appearance was giving them PTSD of all the times she blasted them off.

I think this is the most likely one.

It’s probably a reference on how different TR was in BW, and how even the VAs didn’t like them and probably just don’t want to remember it.

The Japanese TR seiyus have mentioned their dislike of their characters' role in BW many times in several interviews and in their radio show, they never hid it…

And unless the show suffered financially (and there is no reason to think it did), there is no reason for staff to view that series as a failure as the show doesn't pander to older audiences.

You are watching a series with Ash looking almost like an adult, lots of shonen stuff that make it look more fanservice-y than Journeys, and after one of the most infamous league losses the artstyle changes completely and Ash is now a child going to school. I enjoyed it, but just because I was accepting it was something completely different, and this isn't for everyone

Also the good things about XY and SM is how they had very defined style directions, while BW and even Journeys tried to make a mix of stuff that didn't work that well

That's more like it. SM was a completely different beast from every prior series, and such a radical 180 is not necessarily going to be well received by the fanbase if the fanbase liked things the way they were.
