It is near impossible that Wulfric just suddenly finds Abomasnow's mega stone and suddenly mastered it's mega evolution within that short time. So here's what I think, Wulfric could use ME all along, he just didn't have to use it for a while now so he had the stone stored away. So something must've made Wulfric want to bring it back out again and go all out, and that's Ash-Greninja. That's why we don't see the mega stone on Abomasnow at first, he's was not fighting seriously.

I think Ash loses to Wulfric in the episode before this one.

Well, special in the sense that he has something fit to fight against what is probably a highly experienced Mega Evolution. Since Sawyer likely didn't have Mega Sceptile for his battle, he wouldn't have.

We've seen the gulf of power between Sceptile and Ash Greninja. If Mega Abomasnow is enough to push Ash Greninja to its limit, I'd very much question the logic of Sawyer being able to take it down without Mega Sceptile.

To be fair, all we know is that Sawyer beat Wulfric. We don't know if he did on his first try, or if he lost at least once and then won the battle after improving (e.g. Ash losing to Brandon twice but then winning their third battle), unlike with Ash where we see if he beat a gym in one try or not. We know that Sawyer lost to Valerie and then went back and rematched her and won, so I doubt he beat Wulfric on the first try. Besides, maybe it took 3 of Sawyer's Pokemon just to beat Mega Abomasnow kinda like how Paul's Drapion crushed three of Ash's Pokemon in a row only to finally fall after accumulating so much damage.

So I'm guessing that one of these situations happened:
  • Sawyer beat Wulfric in one try because Wulfric didn't use Mega Abomasnow. Gym leaders sometimes hold back their full power, such as Korrina in the games not using Mega Lucario. Maybe Wulfric only uses Mega Abomasnow against trainers with Mega Pokemon as his way of holding back. That could explain why he might not use Mega Abomasnow against Sawyer yet use it against Ash... or Ash asked Wulfric to use it (e.g. Ash asking Noland to use Articuno).
  • Sawyer beat Wulfric and Mega Abomasnow... however Abomasnow took down 2-3 Pokemon in a row and only lost because it had to fight 3 Pokemon without rest, all the while racking up damage. If Ash took six strong Pokemon (e.g. Pikachu, Charizard, Sceptile, Greninja, Gliscor, Heracross) and battled Steven's Mega Metagross, provided that Steven wasn't allowed to switch Pokemon, I'm sure Ash could take down one of his Pokemon just purely by having up to six powerhouse Pokemon rack up significant damage on one Pokemon.
  • Sawyer lost to Wulfric and then came back at a later point for a rematch and won like he did with Valerie. Whether he lost to Wulfric once, twice, or even more than that, we don't really know. We only assume Sawyer won the first time round because we didn't see him battle Wulfric.

I'm guessing the Lum Berry treatment wouldn't work in the anime, unless it just melts through the ice to get to the Pokemon's mouth :p
LOL, somehow I never even thought of that. It's funny how RestoChesto, the most common berry combo from the games would actually makes zero sense in the anime.

So basically to downplay him winning all 8 Kalos badges before Ash and to make Sawyer seem weak still.

I fail to see how him not defeating a Mega which is still probably extremely powerful in its base form makes him 'weak'. For all we know, Wulfric only uses Mega Abomasnow to stop himself being pushed around by other Mega trainers.

Still think Wulfric is pulling Mega Abomasnow out of nowhere because he almost lost last time.

Wasn't there cases of Snorlax sleep eating though?

Or maybe it works like smelling salts just enough for the Pokemon to eat the berry so it works completely.

Mega Abomasnow. Called it long time ago Wulfric would have a Mega as the final test for Ash before the league.

I'm pretty a few cases of Snorlax sleep eating doesn't mean every Pokemon is 100% capable of eating a berry they were holding while asleep. The only ways I could see it work is if they have it in their mouth already, they eat it before the battle and the effects take place if they happen to fall asleep, or if the berry is equipped to them with a machine that has like an automatic Aipom Arm esque feature that feeds it to them.

if sawyer was able to defeat wulfric at first try, it will only show how ash is pathetic as trainer.
after all, if it takes only few weeks/month of training for a newbie to reach (or outstrip) a supposed years experimented trainer, that means the skilled trainer is not that good.
see it, to win against sceptile during the first battle, ash needed to use ash-greninja mode.

Okay Paul. There is so many variables to this that this logic shouldn't even apply.

Greninja does have Aerial Ace which covers Bug, Grass and Fighting which Greninja is weak against. So I can see Greninja using it against Abomasnow. I don't think Ash would be weaker just because Sawyer won against Wulfric the first time.

Gym Leaders scale their teams to the level of their challenger.

Since Sawyer had less badges than Ash currently does, Wulfric used a weaker team against him.
