SV itself didn't get serious until towards the end of the game. Before that, it was just your generic power of friendship stuff.
If anything, Horizons started with a more serious tonality than most series, with Liko struggling to fit in, almost being kidnapped, failing to protect her pokémon and losing them to enemy, a rather sad cliffhanger.
This arc does seem to be more bright with the Explorers playing a smaller part, but it still tackles somewhat of a serious issue which are hikikomoris.
