I have yet to figure out how to make GIMP do the fancy effects I've seen on some icons(AKA "most of the ones I've seen in the scant few icon threads around here"), and I'm not one for making textless icons thanks to said lack of fancy effects to spruce up my icons with, so...yeah. I actually like the one textless icon I've made, other than the fact that Ho-oh and Lugia look like they have a serious case of red-eye. Now...on to the product of much boredom and free time!

That's most of the ones that I don't completely hate as of now, roughly in order from newest to oldest. Use them if you want, provided that you give credit. My Photobucket has gobs of bandwidth to spare, so don't worry about direct-linking. :3

These...frankly, look effortless. You just got a picture, cropped it, and slapped on some text. Maybe putting on a filter or two.

They are a bit blah, but some of them are pretty good. I really like the "Attack of the Monkeys one"

The text looks like it could've been added in paint. You probably want to use some effects to make it stand out more and merge with the background in most cases. I agree with Zuloon on putting them through some filters. You want to add a creative touch and make the pictures look unique.

However, I can say that in most of the cases of these avatars your text placement is solid.

Keep practicing, don't worry, you'll get better ^^

Some are good (e.g. the fire spirit one)
And some are....meh =/ (e.g. "I shall kill you with my overrated-ness")
Yeah...just keep working and try doing other things besides just cropping images and adding text.
