Pidgey. Pidgeot helps a lot.
If you're a patient person, catch a Zubat. When it evolves to Crobat, your hard work pays off. :)

try catching all the pokemon you see. however it's handy to have a caterpie (becomes butterfree with confusion)

Caterpie for Butterfree with Confusion and sleep Powder to catch others,
Pikachu for Misty,
geodude foe Surge or You will Get Slaughterd By Riachu having butterfree and squirtle.
pidgey or spearow, against all the early grass types you come against around Cerulean city.

Completing The Trio
definitely get a pikachu and catch yourself a nidoran [male],
stick with a pidgey and get it to pidgeot
grab a geodude for defensive purposes
and grab yourself a mankey just for the offensive attacks that it posseses

Catch a Clafary in Mt. Moon, it'll help later on in the game

i don't lose
i believe spearow is the way to go for flyers. drill peck is a killer and doesn't take that long to learn. don't waste your time with pikachu, just get squirtle and spearow up a good way and you'll be fine for misty. i prefer nidoking/queen or dugtrio for surge over graveler, but thats just preference. and depending on how far you're going when you say "early on" gastly/haunter/gengar are absolutely awesome, i would also recommend snorlax, and spend some time in the game corner and get yourself a dratini. that will give you by the time you finish lavendar tower: wartortle, fearow, dratini/dragonair, gastly/haunter/gengar, dugtrio/nidoking/nidoqueen, snorlax or another pokemon of your choice. basically that team will handle the elite four and get you through anything you need. slight ice weakness, so you may want to drop fearow and replace it with something resistant before lorelei, but if you get snorlax a rock/fighting attack (i believe brick break is purchasable somewhere) you should be fine through most of the game. in FR arcanine is another good option, and covers ice weakness just avoid it against dewgong, cloyster and lapras for lorelei.

The chance of finding a Clefairy at Mt. Moon is extremely low... is it really worth it?
if you look for one at the end of the cave its easy to find, and yeah its worth it because, to fill up the pokedex one would want all pokemon, and to breed it later on in the game, plus Clefable can learn "softboiled" thats pretty cool

try to get a caterpie and a pikachu in veridian forest. Try to evolve caterpie to butterfree and teach it confusion, it's good against brock. Later, use pikachu against misty. Catch a pidgey too and train, it helps.

;025; Pikachu is a good choice for an Electric type. It helped me through my FR game.

I actually find after Clefairy evolves into Clefable, it turns into a fairly decent Pokémon.

Honestly, I've never caught a Pikachu, due to the fact that I always or almost choose Squirtle, and by the time I arrive at Misty, I use it's Bite attack, which is a Dark-type move, strong against Misty's Starmie, which is half Psychic-type. Though, if you enjoy the ugly rat, by all means, catch one. -_-;

My team after leaving Mt. Moon, looks somewhat like this:

Wartortle/Ivysaur
Pidgeotto/Mankey
Clefairy/Jigglypuff/None

That, or if you're having trouble with Misty, after you DIDN'T catch a Pikachu, you can always go up past Nugget Bridge, and catch yourself an Oddish, which knows Absorb, and train it somewhat to enable it to effectively help you against Misty.

Hope I helped!
