Considering that fairy type Pokemon and moves tend to have a connotation with the moon, I wouldn't be surprised if the moon legendary (assuming they actually embody the sun/moon) is fairy type, possibly with dark as a secondary type.

Hell, the sun legendary might be fairy/fire seeing as fairy is essentially the "light" type we never got as well.

Just wanted to post this image that has been referenced from the "Book of Legends" from the 3rd movie. It definitely depicts a sun-god type face thing over some very Hawaiian flowers. Now, it's probably just stylized, but the "flames" around the sun kinda look a lot like leaves/petals to me and, given the green boarder, maybe our Sun legend is a Fire/Grass type! Just something to think about. :)
I wouldn't put too much stock in an insignificant detail from a 16 year old movie made by a totally different company.

I hope we get an actual Legendary Trio this time. I've been wanting a Nordic God Trio based on Thor, Loki and Odin for awhile.

Thor- Electric/Fighting
Loki- Dark/Fairy
Odin- Psychic

Loving the idea and typings. You could catch them in temples scattered across the region. I'd also like some roaming legendries akin to the Lati twins.

EDIT: In fact it would be awesome if your first wild encounter was the roaming legendary, but rather than fight you, the region's professor interrupts and scares it off, commenting "wow that was ???, the legendary Pokémon, you are very fortunate to see such a rare beast, though it would be quite dangerous for you to face it as a new trainer"

I see the mascot legends being Dark/Fairy for Sun, and Fire/Electric for Moon. i think they will be switched like in B/W because of how the crystals are switched in the Japanese titles.

I am 99% sure the Sun (Moon) legend will be Dark type. The games symbol is literally a dark type symbol with a circle scooped out and placed somewhere else. Before Fairy type was a thing, I feel like the dark type represented the moon. A great example of this is Umbreon. They were night time pokemon who flourished in moonlight. Fairy is an obvious second choice because of the current connection between fairy types and the moon. Though it could be replaced with water type seeing as the moon is associated with water in myth, and how it controls the tides. And Ice could work, but I feel that's more of a stretch.

Fire/Electric works great for the Moon (Sun) legend seeing as those two types roughly represent plasma, and it would be a neat combo, though I suppose Fire/Grass could work too. I don't however see Fire/Fairy working. Fairy just has too much symbolism with the moon.

No one has ever though of a rabbit for the moon legendary? Because of the moon rabbit
And for the sun a Lion is the best option. Scarab are associated with the sun in egypt.... Phoenix would be perfect, but Moltres and Ho-oh already exist

Major Gods and Characters. The most important gods of the Polynesian pantheon were those associated with creation myths and legends. Best known were Rangi (Father Sky) and Papa (Mother Earth), the two supreme creator gods of the Maori people of New Zealand. According to Maori legend, Rangi and Papa served as the source from which all things came.

The counterparts of Rangi and Papa in Hawaiian mythology were Ao and Po. Ao represented the male force in the universe and was associated with the sky, the day, and light. Po, the feminine force, was linked with the earth, darkness, and night. According to Hawaiian myth, a creator god named Ku separated Ao from Po. Ku then worked with Lono, god of the heavens, and Kane, the chief god of generation and growth, to create the earth and all living things. After Kane made the first man and woman, he became angry at their bad behavior and decided that humans would be subject to death. He then left the earth and went to live in heaven.

Seeing as it's looking more like it's going to be in Hawaii now, Ao and Po themed legends seem to be really likely.

Ao/Rangi
Typing Electric/??? Fire/???

Po/Papa
Typing Fairy/Dark, Ground/Dark, or Ground/Fairy.

Pele
Fire/Fairy or Fire/Dark

I love the gods ideas being thrown around.

Maybe a legendary trio based on location, i.e the guardians of specific areas in the region. So if it is Hawaii themed, then have a fire type guardian of a volcano, a water type guardian of the sea and... another one.

I'd have a hard time believing the Sun legendary won't be fire or electric, especially with stars being balls of Plasma, with bot fire and electricity having ties to plasma.

As for Moon, if the Pokemon world's moon is like ours, it may interact with the ocean, thus giving a good case for a water type. Maybe Ice?

Has anyone said anything about Amaterasu and Tsukuyomi yet? The Shinto sun and moon gods respectively? I'll eat my hat if the mascot legendaries aren't based off of them.

Those are really good odds of eating your hat seeing as we know almost nothing about these games.

I've said this before but.... Fire/Ghost.

Plasma+Ectoplasma=Fire/Ghost Sun Legendary.

I see the connection but I imagine a Sun legendary to be glorious and perhaps a bit pompous, which is usually nearly the opposite of Ghost pokémon. At least if the Moon legendary is more mysterious and restrained(Fairy, Water, etc).
But Fire is probably the type that represents that the best, so I don't have any good guesses for secondary typing. Besides Dragon, but I am still a bit sick of mascot Dragons. I'm wishing for Fire/Electric though.

Well, Dialga and Giratina contain elements of both, and Ho-Oh also contains some of the elements of Amaterasu(specifically the kimino girls' dance to bring it back).

So I don't think we will have another round of Shinto deities, honestly.

Magearna is a rabbit, effectively, and has a crescent shape on its forehead, with a round circle in the crescent, not too dissimilar to the Moon logo.

I don't think there is a direct connection necessarily, but here you go.

"One Hawaiian creation myth is embodied in the Kumulipo, an epic chant linking the aliʻi, or Hawaiian royalty, to the gods. The Kumulipo is divided into two sections: night, or pō, and day, or ao, with the former corresponding to divinity and the latter corresponding to mankind. After the birth of Laʻilaʻi, the woman, and Kiʻi, the man, the man succeeds at seducing and reproducing with the woman before the god Kāne has a chance, thereby making the divine lineage of the gods younger than and thus subservient to the lineage of man. This, in turn, illustrates the transition of mankind from being symbols for the gods (the literal meaning of kiʻi) into the keeper of these symbols in the form of idols and the like.[7] The Kumulipo was recited during the time of Makahiki, to honor the god of fertility, Lono.[8]"
So yes, this post is pretty legit.

Fire/Electric works well too because science reasons.

With the titles Sun and Moon, I want to see the next games with overwhelming and thrilling mascots. With Hawaii as the speculated inspiration for the next region, I think the legendary Pokemon will be based on Hawaiian legends. The following are the legendary Pokemon that I want to see and think we will see in the next games:

1) I think (and I hope) that Missingno will finally play a huge role in the next games! Hawaii is not without its spooky legends. Among them are the Night Marchers and I think Missingno will be based on them. Game Freak might build a story about Missingno. With Red, Blue, and Yellow now playable in the 3DS and Pokemon from these games will be transferrable to S/M, it will be very interesting to see Missingno as the Night Marchers!!! Read the quote below and imagine the Night Marchers as Missingno:

"The Huaka’ipo are the spirits of ancient Hawaiian warriors who are eternally cursed to march throughout the islands of Hawaii. Known as the Night Marchers, they are said to march in a single line, often carrying torches and weapons, playing drums, and chanting. The Night Marchers rarely appear during the day, but when they do it means that they are escorting a living relative to the other side. The telling signs that Night Marchers are heading toward you are the sounds of drums getting closer, a foul odor, conch shells being blown, and approaching torchlight." -- McAllister, M., Listverse

Missingno will be a Ghost type! :)

2) A legendary Pokemon that is based on the Hawaiian legendary lovers: Pele and Kamapua'a
As a brief explanation: Pele is a beautiful Hawaiian deity who looks over the volcanoes of their islands while Kamapua'a is a handsome man who was maltreated by his stepfather so he deliberately made his face ugly and wore a pig mask.

With Volcanion around, it's not unlikely that we will have a... oh, my gosh, upon typing, it struck me. What if Pele and Kamapua'a are linked to Magearna and Volcanion? Idk. Back to the Pokemon at hand, with Volcanion around and Hawaii being the speculated inspiration for the next region, it's not impossible to have a Pokemon based on these Hawaiian legends!

Pele will be a Ground/Fire type or maybe a Fire/Psychic type while Kamapua'a will be a Dark type.

I desperately want Ghost/Fighting Pokemon and that Night Marchers legend would give GF a reason to create one (if the game will be really confirmed to be set in Hawaii). :D
As for the legendary Pokèmon being based on gods from the Hawaiian folklore, I'm all for it! :D

Seeing as Nintendo's official statement on Missingno was that "MissingNO is a programming quirk, and not a real part of the game" I don't think we'll ever be seeing it again.
Though the Night Marchers idea sounds pretty good! Just, it'd most likely have to be an original thing and not using Missingno.

Yeah. I guess so, but the Night Marchers will be amazing. Like what @Aetius said above, it'll be cool to finally have a Ghost/Fighting type Pokemon!

In another note, I found something interesting:

In Hawaiian mythology, Māui is a culture hero and ancient chief who appears in several different genealogies. He had several feats and among them are: a) he hauled up the Hawaiian islands and b) restrained the sun. The latter is very interesting! Maui aimed to stop the sun from moving so fast. His mother Hina complains that her kapa (bark cloth) is unable to dry because the days are so short. Māui climbs to the mountain Hale-a-ka-lā (house of the sun) and lassoes the sun’s rays as the sun comes up, using a rope made from his sister's hair. The sun pleads for life and agrees that the days shall be long in summer and short in winter.

I think a lot of people are too expectant of Hawaiin box art legends. RSE were somewhat Hebrew despite being in Japan, whilst XY were Nordic despite being in France.

Don't get me wrong though, Hawaiin mythology is quite fleshed out and full of inspiration, but it is far from confirmed.
