Let's GO Main Story Discussion Thread

Since I've not seen a thread for discussing the main story and what it could potentially hold, I decided to go ahead and make this thread.

Here's my particular reason, though. Game Freak was very precise with how they've introduced the multiverse concept to the series, expanding it across two generations and three titles. It's clear this concept is not a one-off thing and they plan to continue it in some form. Thus, I go to the subject of Giovanni.

At the end of the Rainbow Rocket postgame in USUM, Giovanni teleported from USUM's Alola to another world, asking himself what world he should try his schemes on next. Even with Let's GO being a rather casual game and following the beat of Yellow, Game Freak has been ripe with wanting to input plot twists in these games. Therefore, I posit a couple things:

1. Could this be the Kanto that Giovanni is from? Could this be the world where Giovanni actually won?
2. Could this Kanto be the place Giovanni transported to? Could we perhaps get a mention from him upon the final battle that he's done this before? That he has "dealt with kids like you" before?
3. Could Let's GO's story have a mere nod to the multiverse concept, even if the overall story remains the same as Yellow? Could we get NPCs mentioning what if's or even confirming the occurrences of events in other worlds?

Those are just my thoughts on the matter of Let's GO's story. Feel free to respond, or share your own thoughts on what you think the overall story may hold.

I was thinking of doing the same thing but worried it would be closed.

I think that following on Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon would be a cool thing to do, maybe this team Team Rocket would be even more dangerous since Giovanni would know to look out for the young trainer from Pallet Town. But honestly, I don't see Game Freak going that route.

I hope they do throw curve balls like including Alolan Pokemon on some teams like giving Koga and Alolan Muk and giving Agatha (or Blaine) Alolan Marowak.

I expect that it will be similar to the original plot but with more detail put in to make it different from RBY and FRLG. I expect some twist to be put into Team Rocket because they felt quite empty in RBY and FRLG.

I think Gamefreak said the story isn’t going to tie into Ultra Sun/Moon, so I don’t expect to see any of the alternatives universe/Rainbow Rocket/timeline stuff until Gen 8, maybe it’ll leave some more story stuff to tie into the future with Giovanni though.

What I am curious about is what the story of the protagonist is. It seems like so far, we’re getting a straight up remake of Yellow, except Red and Blue aren’t the protagonists and (allegedly) appear as NPCs instead? I have no idea how that’s gonna work since it’s pretty established that Red is the guy who started from Pallet Town, took down Team rocket, Became Champion, etc.
So in this new story, does he still do that or is that the protagonists job? If so, then what are Red and Blue doing? Is the story parallel to RBYFRLG with the protagonist on a journey at the same time as Red and Blue or does it take place years later, with grown up Red and Blue, but still the same basic story as the original (Think Star Wars: The Force Awakens)

So many questions!

With the rumours of Red and Blue (lord, do I hate those names) appearing in the plot as some sort of mentors and the reveal that in the alpha demo of Gold/Silver you were supposed to have a brother. Wouldn't it be interesting if you were like Red's younger brother/sister in these games?

Considering these games are aiming for a more casual experience I don't expect to see a deep story/multiverse connection (and honestly, I'm not a huge fan of the whole multiverse thing and don't really want a game centered around it). In one of the interviews it was mentioned that LGPE will have similar story beats to Yellow, and that's what I'm expecting. I think there'll definitely be stuff added in, though; both small additions and something bigger like a proper Mewtwo plot.

Given the games cater more to those that are not hardcore Pokemon fans, it is doubtful it will tie heavily with previous games (particularly Ultra Sun/ Ultra Moon). The story is likely similiar to Yellow with perhaps some changes to flesh out Mewtwo a bit more.

Quoting this from Eurogamer.
You said that the game is inspired by Pokémon Yellow from 1999? Can we find the same story as it was then?

Masuda: So one thing I can say is that the game world, the overworld, the whole map, is very true to the original Pokémon Yellow games. And also the story kind of sticks to the story beats from Pokémon Yellow.

One of the kind of reasons behind that was, with the games being released 20 years ago, I kind of imagined that maybe some parents who played Yellow version when they were kids, will now have kids of their own and they can kind of remember that adventure and maybe give some hints or tips to their kids that are playing the game.

Maybe some other fun things, for example the first Gym Leader, Brock - a lot of kids who maybe grew up with the animated series and not the original Red and Blue series, they may not even know he was a gym leader, so there might be some fun discoveries there.

So Jessie and James could be on this game. The Gym Leaders and Elite Four most likely still the same people. Blue could still be the same rival (it would just feel weird if he gets Pikachu for those playing the Eevee version).

I can’t wait to see ehow they handle the Mewtwo and Mew story. They could really pull from the old theory that everything Team Rocket did in Gen 1 was related to Giovanni trying to capture Mewtwo, for example:

Sometime before the story, Giovanni learns that Mewtwo was created by Dr.Fuji and makes a master plan to capture him.
He begins by stealing fossils on Mt. Moon to research cloning and stuff, and running a Casino in Celedon City to secure funding, all the while mantain a public appearance as the Gym Leader of Viridian City.

He comes up with 2 contingency plans in case things dont go according to plan, Send a faction of Team Rocket to steal the Silph Scope to capture Ghost Type pokemon for battle, and sends one of his goon to steal a TM of Dig as a quick escape plan.

Giovanni then sends Team Rocket to interrogate the old Dr. Fuji for any and all information on Mewtwo.
Next, they infiltrate Silph Co itself to claim the prototype Master Ball and begin to mass produce them to amass an unstoppable army of Powerful pokemon for Team Rocket with Mewtwo at their head.

The postgame story could really add a whole new layer to everything by giving Mewtwo an expanded story and throwing Mew in there as a Deoxys like special battle

Considering we're supposed to get two-player co-op with the other protagonist being Player 2 (and apparently having the mascot you don't), I don't think Blue's going to have Pikachu, or even Eevee. I do know that you get a Bulbasaur at one point, so maybe there's an event at some point after you leave Pallet Town where you pick a Kanto starter to complement Pikachu/Eevee, and he just gets whatever's strong against what you pick like normal.

From what we’ve seen so far, it looks like your Co-op buddy just shares your team and items with you, but yeah, I thinks Blue’s team is gonna be interesting. I don’t think he’ll take Pikachu, because that would be a little weird, but if he does, he’ll probably use his Jolteon team from Yellow, swapping it with Raichu.
Maybe he’ll just use his “canon” team for both games (Pidgeot,Alakazam,Exeggutor,Rhydon,Arcanine,Gyarados) and start out with Pidgey or something

Actually, it's been confirmed that the rival isn't Blue himself, but rather a boy named "Trace." Of course, that doesn't mean he won't have a similar team to what Blue had in Yellow, but even so...

I'm going to take a wild guess that we won't be getting an in-game Mew event... That's disappointing, but still they could surprise us.

I think that since time passed since yellow in this game, Jessie and James will be in a higher rank within Team Rocket and they will have a more prominent part in realizing malicious plans.

Hehe, I would love to see Jessie and James with a higher rank and with actual importance to the story. lol, maybe they can use a decent disguise initially and then reveal themselves later (like those two guys from X and Y (forgot their names but the one's with the super hero identities)).
