I think it could turn out good in the right hands. I was ok with how the Pokemon translated to live action in the Detective Pikachu film. I just hope it isn't an adaptation of the anime series

Yes, even if it is an adaptation of the anime series, then just do it normally. You just don't need to turn it into a serious picture with seemingly recognizable characters, but do something of your own. It can be a plot twist or a look from a different angle.
