Ahead of his battle with Raihan to enter the Masters 8, Ash & Lucario decide to go to Kalos to meet Ash's Greninja. Lucario is eager to battle and challenges Greninja, ending up losing. However, Greninja wants to help Lucario and their aura start aligning. Will Greninja be able to help?

I mean, the anime has grown more specific as to what is to be considered an official release.

It's simple, no reason for anyone to debate so much.

A true release is when the Pokemon is either outright permanently given away with no intention or means of getting it back, or ejected from and not registered to its Pokeball anymore (or said ball is destroyed). In that sense, none of Ash's released Pokemon are truly released (except Beedrill, Seaking, the UBs and Rowlet 2).
