Mario Kart DS: Lag FAQ

Kudos to StarPilot from the NSider forums.

I've seen a lot of threads asking 'how do you teleport on wifi',
or 'I won! But they got the points for first'.

Well, I decided to make a MKDS Lag FAQ.

First off, lag is always present, you just may not notice it.
Think of how far your data has to travel to get to the other
players your racing, it's not truly instant.
The data has a lot of routers to pass through,
and the routers must figure out where to send the data.
Otherwise, you may get disconnected if the routers
always send the data to the wrong place.

Now on to the questions.

Q1:How do you teleport on wifi?

A1:You don't. This is an illusion created by lag. The information
from their game was delayed, and your DS tried to estimate where
they are based on their last trasmission. Your DS saw them going
straight off the cliff(or whatever) when in reality, they turned in time.

Q2:I won, but the game says I didn't, did they hack?

A2:No they didn't. Again, their game data was delayed for some reason,
and your DS didn't know exactly where they were. The points are given
out based on when the racer crossed the finish line. So even if you saw
that they were behind you, in reality they were ahead of you, and your
DS just showed an estimated position.

Q3:How are they getting Blue/Spiny Shells in first place?

A3:They aren't in first place. Your DS just thinks they are ahead of you
based on their last transmission, while in reality they are just behind you.

Q4:Why are my Shells going through them? / Why am I going through them?

A4:They aren't exactly where your DS thinks they are. Your DS just shows
where it thinks they are, but your opponent's DS must transmit that you
hit/ran into them.

Q5:Why are my opponents zig zagging all over the track?

A5:That's a combination of lag and snaking. The reason is similar
to the teleporting answer. If you don't know what snaking is, click this.

Yeah, something like that happened to me once. I was clearly first (the place counter even said so) but I was placed second. I felt so bsed. :|

It happened to me twice in the same race...I was on Sky Garden. And like way ahead of someone in first place, and then all of a sudden they were way ahead of me -_-;

But the way it looked - it didnt look like lag. There is a cheating device out their for the DS now...

How, exactly, would a code to teleport you in front of your opponent work? What, did they just enter it in the middle of the race, or what? Sorry, but I doubt they cheated. It's more likely that they picked up triple mushrooms, or a golden mushroom, and passed you that way.
