A couple days ago, my friend let me borrow his PSP because I was CRAZY about playing Maverick Hunter X. I'm a moderate Megaman fan after all.
Inafune-sama seems to be going on the right track remastering the X series because really after X4 (or at least when the English version was being produced) the series started going downhill with plotholes and unanswered questions.
MHX takes the first Mega Man X and enhances it with the standards of Mega Man X8 (by which the series features 3D visuals in solid 2D gameplay) and X4 (taking the time to make anime cutscenes integral to the story) and X6 (spoken dialogue in-game with character artwork) for a more story driven experience while gameplay is IMPROVED from the original (some perks include changing weapons while firing or using others, like Charged Rolling Shield while using your X-Buster or Charged Chameleon Sting while using Storm Tornado)
Some elements of storyline have changed but I won't say which ones. All I'll say is that X is better defined as a character and if you're good (at the game), you get to see a 24-minute OVA of the events that happen before the game (animated by Xebec, who was responsible for the cutscenes in Mega Man X4 as well as the Rockman.EXE/Megaman NT Warrior animation series).
What's also good about the modernized classic is that all major characters talk (voiced by the Ocean Group surprisingly, who before had a dealing with all the Megaman TV animation and the Upon a Star OVA but NEVER before with the games). This is more a fanboy perk, so don't mind me on this one. I never thought of Launch Octopus as flamboyant and I think it suits him well, though I thought Storm Eagle should have had Vile's voice (who comes off as an angsty...er, Reploid), Chill Penguin and Boomerang Kuwanger are dead on, as for Flame Mammoth and Spark Mandrill? Their voices make me laugh, but in a good way. Sting Chameleon's voice reminds me of Jar Jar Binks, if he attended charm school and wrote for the New Yorker and finally Armored Armadillo's voice reminds me of Espio from Sonic Heroes
Along the way you also get a closer look at Vile, he's not quite the poster child of Sigma we made him out to be and we see that when we play his scenario. The ol' Boba Fett-wannabe is practically a swiss army knife, armed with Rocket Punches, Vulcans, Missiles, Shoulder Blasts, Lasers, Grenades and Flamethrowers. The catch? There's two; One, you're limited in which weapons you can equip (meaning you may have to kill ALL the reploids before you can use some weapons and you can't customize Vile with ALL the most powerful weapons because of this...at least in the first playthrough) and second, Vile can only character 3 weapons out of the 40 or so you acquire.
With 5 more games Capcom and Keiji Inafune plan to redevelop on the PSP, Maverick Hunter X is a rebirth of a classic and possibly the beginning of the end for Megaman X, only that the intended closure (X5) didn't receive the proper care, time and energy of development. This time however, I think it will, only that Inafune agreed to work on an X6 remake as well (taking all the cheese out eh?). My guess is that more background information will be revealed in the sequels like when Signas became leader, why X stepped down as captain of the Maverick Hunters, Alia's first appearance and the start of Zero and Iris' relationship (as well as getting rid of that TACKY fake Australian accent)
It's great to feel like I'm 9 years old again, but now I'm seriously craving an actual Mega Man X anime...
