Kibago not being evolved would feel rather odd given the lack of his presence in the opening/marketing/posters and we know from flashbacks they do show Dent/Kibago in the redrawn scenes in PM2019/Journeys style. The title is always literally called "Dragon Battle" which *could* just be referring to the dual Kairyu but why not use a more specific title referencing the species if that was the case? Like maybe just "Kairyu" battle/showdown/match like they did for Alan/Trova's Lizardon or other similar mirror matches?

I mean if the title is just referring to Iris *offering* a battle as a dragon specialist she realistically would be using multiple dragons, be that Fukamaru/Gabite/Gablias or Kibago/Onondo/Ononokus as her second round pick. Plus they have no issue showcasing her Emonga---didn't appear to be a battle but maybe a greeting so we can maybe assume the flying squirrel takes over the Dragon toddler's marketing status as meeting the shillmon criteria.

Ultimately if we don't get Kibago evolved I'm not too fussed but it would be a really nice cherry on top of a sundae to finally see Iris with her most known signature 'mon in the anime given she has Ononodo in the games and Masters as well. I won't put expectations on the episode to be perfect or for my wishlist to be fulfilled but it is fun to at least manifest the idea of Axe Jaw dragon making a First Impression on Satoshi~

I have a pretty clear memory of Excadrill 1v1ing Pikachu and beating it. Don't know how Ash lost to an 'objectively inferior' trainer in the tournament.

The same Pikachu that lost to Trips's Snivy. Even Ash lost to Misty during the Whirl Cup. Iris was never shown to be the superior battler off the two. If that were the case, then Ash would've constantly wanted to battle Iris or considered her a Rival he'd want to defeat.

I mean y’all praise Pikachu in XY and yet and all he had trouble with a Surskit in the beginning of XY and Serena’s Braxien was going toe to toe with him with no clear indication he was holding back on her. Obviously Pikachu’s power levels depend on the situation and at the point of the series. And you make no sense. Ash had a interest in battling Iris in the episode Charizard came back, battled her when Levanny reached its final evolution and this will make their fifth battle overall. I’m not sure why you expect companions to be rivals? That kinda defeats the point of Ash having a designated... rival?

You mean to tell me that ....

Ash is inconsistent when it comes to battling and the same could be the case between Ash vs Iris and Ash vs Leon.

Gee, never could have guessed.

First off: unconfirmed genders shouldn't be assumed as female, but as either 'it' or 'they'.

You're comparing and weighing the moves between the Dragonite to claim that Ash can win that battle. I already agree to that. I just can't see Dragonite defeating both Angrynite ánd Haxorus.

I mean what's the point of evolving Axew if it doesn't get a good win to show off its improvement?!

Don't forget they're bringing back Gary as well. Lose against Iris as a catalyst to give his dragons some development and then move up into Hyper Rank when facing Gary. Seems to me like the best scenario.

I'm calling Ash's Dragonite a girl cause that's what I want it to be. At the same time I am acknowledging it's not confirmed yet. So I don't see what's the big deal.

Dragonite beat both Mienshao and Mega-Lucario. Why can't the Abomination(TM) do some serious damage to Haxorus but still lose to it. Dragonite can OHKO and not take damage when it goes up and then the Dragonite brawl can happen. Isn't Haxorus still getting a "good win" in this scenario?

That doesn't make much sense. If the jump to Ultra Class depends on this match, it will likely be where Ash wins. We don't even know if Gary is even a part of the WCS. If he is, he'd be a great first opponent. I don't want him to be as he would be a great catalyst for development regarding Ash and Goh's Abominations and Goh's Aerodactyl as he is a Fossil Researcher for the most part.

Not gonna get into the debate about whether Iris can beat Ash or not, but the battle you chose is a bad example. Pikachu was in a terribly massive type disadvantage against Excadrill. 2 of his attacks did nothing, and the other 2 were not very effective. While Excadrill had super effective moves against Pikachu. If anything, Iris NOT winning that battle would've been weird.

a little question:
in your opinion, how many minutes of this supposed ASH vs iris focused episode will be wasted on go catching some random unova pokemon?
It'll probably be similar to the Korrina episode. So not that bad, but not ideal either.

i'm hoping it's more like the alola episode and the battle is only 1 on 1, i know most probably don't want that since it would likely mean seeing only their dragonites go at it.

But I want Iris and Ash to think back on their journey together, and have some nice character interaction between them before (or after) going to battle against each other.

Not sure that's a good idea.

Iris: Hey, Ash! Remember when I beat you at the Clubexplosive something?
Ash: Yeah...
Iris: Remember when you brought one Pokemon against Elesa thinking you could beat her with just one?
Ash: Y-yeah...
Iris: Remember when someone dumber than you beat you at the league without even taking a full team?
Ash: ...
Iris: Remember whe-
Ash: Iris, don't you have a GOOD memory where I'm not a loser?
Iris: ...Remember you won in that boat tourney outside Unova and we learned the dark truth about Cilan's dislike with Purrloin?
Ash: Oh, yeah! What else?
Iris: That's...um...pretty much it.
Ash: S-seriously, you can't think of ANYTHING else?
Goh: Wait, Cilan wh-?

Bittersweet Satisfaction
This just shows how problematic their obsession with making everything as episodic and self contained as possible.

In any other series this would be at least a two parter where the first episode will handle all the nostalgia bait so the next can focus on the battle. Did they forget how to do that like how ash forgot everything in BW?

Well i guess there’s still a small chance it is a two parter, so i hope we get the next ep tittle soon.

Yes, because winning a big tournament is what makes a character good.

*looks at PM Ash*

Yeah, he still kinda fucking sucks?
Well, it wasn't just the fact he was an overall loser. We all saw how dumber (that someone thrice the dumbness took him down without a full team even) and cockier he got (which directly caused Iris to criticize him more) when mistakes like those would've been impossible to make when he was in DP.
