Sounds pretty reasonable, but isn't your character a trainer and gets turned into a pokemon? Who knows, he could posses a Celebi who time-traveled him back and he changed.

I think it is a 'land before time' type region (what is it called?) and just focused on a certain area...

Well, it's just that i read somewhere (probably either main site, PokemonElite2000 or a NOM magazine), that there was a trainer that changes into the starter pokemon.

NOM=Nintendo Official Magazine, before they changed.

I think you're just a person who becomes a Pokemon, but the Celebi theory makes sense, especially when you consider the fact that you don't have to battle Celebi to befriend it.

Okay. I have the game let me clear it up. It has some spoilers so I think I'll wrap it up tight.

At a certain point in the game Gengar will tell the Pokemon in the city about you being human after he listens to your conversation with Xatu on top of the mountain. The Pokemon become furious and run you out of town for being human. You cannot return back to town until you beat Moltres and Articuno and have met Ninetales.

Does that clear it up? The Pokemon know about humans!

maybe..It's another dimension, parallel to the 'normal' pokemon world!
The human has accidentally 'fallen' into that dimension and changed into a pokemon!
well, it's a nice theory, isn't it?

I was thinking maybe a gigantic wildlife preserve where humans are supposed to stay out of and allow Pokemon to live without interference.

You seriously want to know that? Time for the biggest spoiler of all time

After you beat Rayquaza he stops the meteor that was going to crush the land with a hyper beam (oh man that scene was sweeeeeet!) and then you goto the top of a mountain where other Pokemon (Xatu, your partner, Pokemon from the city) are and little yellow circles start to form around you. Everyone gets all sad and stuff and then everyones crying and stuff because you're (supposedly) going to leave the Pokemon region and they don't want you to go. You turn into a big yellow orb thing and you fly up into space and then the credits roll. You later end up back in your base, and greet your partner and now you can do other stuff (like evolve and befriend ledgenaires).

So I guess it's kinda....yes and no =/

The spoiler makes me think of XD/Colosseum because of the nothing changed, but you really beat the game. It's kind of hard to explain without giving away the spoiler though.
