Metalheads? anybody?

Good. Dimmu is one of the worst metal bands there are. Along the lines of DragonForce, Trivium, and Cradle of Filth.

I remember seeing Trivium's cover of Metallica's Master Of Puppets, done with heavy distortion and in cut time. I seriously lol'd.

Metalhead here. If I can mosh to it, I listen to it.

To be honest, thats the best thing they've ever done.

Yet still fails in comparison to the original.

Can someone please tell me what's so good about Pantera? Because I can't figure out why people like them.

Not the best band, but Pantera did help bring metal back into the spotlight. Grunge and other alt rock sub-genres were running rampant at the time, iirc. Dimebag is a good guitarist, though. If you can't see that, or enjoy the fact that he took blues scales and made them "metal", then you are a lost cause.

Dimebag is good, yes. Overrated, but good. I just can't seem to get into the band.

They was more of one of those, "you had to be there when it started to enjoy" bands. Moreover, they're more of the Anthrax-esque level of metal bands; good, but not "**** YEAH LET'S DO SOME ****" epic.

Tbh, though, I still find fucking hostile, cowboys from hell, cemetary gates, this love, and a few others to be good to this very day. And the riff to walk just drives itself into my head until I feel like moshing.

OOHH YEE YOU WANT ME
Speaking of metal, I could really use the names of a few good Metalcore/Groove Metal/Thrash Metal bands, I'd like to make my taste a little more diverse.

If you want some stuff that you might like that is totally not mainstream and kicks a fuck load of shit out of most heavy bands, i'll link you to a few good myspaces.
Let's think.

Blueprint To A Downfall

Ella

My Mind's Weapon

Nato

Devour Thy Sins

Ghosts Over Japan

Elias Last Day

Emmure

Johnny Truant

cba finding more, but that's a short list of my faves.

I've really been digging !T.O.O.H.!, Necrophagist, and other Tech death bands lately.

Though I'm a thrash fan 100%. MEgadeth Kreator, Nevermore, Slayer, Testament, Sepultura, etc.

Gotta raise the devil horns and say nice one for your thrash selection, especially Kreator and Nevermore.

Dimmu are god awful I must admit... as for the others, DragonForce have received too much mainstream attention in my opinion, their guitar work is impressive to be fair but their style as a band doesn't capture my imagination much, also when I saw them play last year they were utter bollocks. Actually, if I'm honest, although I agree Trivium are more well known than they probably should be, I gotta say, I do quite enjoy their music, and I was listening to them back before anyone had even heard of them... I hate to say it, but despite Machine Head trying to be the new Metallica with 'The Blackening' album, if any band are gonna be the new kids on the block, Trivium's sort of a modern day version of Metallica in some ways, not all obviously, but have a think and you'll see what I mean. Cradle of Filth... the word 'bleh' comes to mind, the only decent moment they had was using the vocalist of Leaves' Eyes in one song, aside from that they are the root of a lot of the misconceptions of those uneducated in the art of metal.

Thrash/speed/heavy/whatever metal bores me, with a few exceptions. It's all so homogeneous and the bands usually uninspired. However, even though I used to hate the genre, I have a growing fondness of death metal.

What some good music that is metal? Try out Agalloch, Tool, Dream Theater (when they aren't wanking all over the place), Riverside, Time of Orchids, Death, Cynic, Disillusion (Back to the Times of Splendor only), and Pain of Salvation.

Iron Maiden will forever remain my favorite metal band. I love almost all their songs including "Hallowed Be Thy Name," "Aces High," "Revelations," "Flight of Icarus," "Powerslave," "Dance of Death," "Paschendale," "The Number of the Beast," and many more. Legendary vocalist, amazing guitar work (well, I prefer Smith and Murray much more than Gers, but whatever), incredible songs...just a class band.

My other favorites include artists such as Hammerfall, Ensiferum, Metallica ('80s only), Children of Bodom, Megadeth, Dio, Black Sabbath, stuff like that.

Some of my favorites are Disturbed (I suppose they're nu-metal/hard rock), Nightwish, Dark Tranquility, Slayer, Apocalyptica (many consider them metal), Arch Enemy, and some others.

I do like "Puritania" by Dimmu Borgir, though, for its sound...I can't say I like the rest of their songs, though. As for the album work, I think they need to stop putting softcore pornography on them, and get serious album art.

My thoughts, anyway.

Listening to grown men scream like there pregnant? No thankyou.
I wish you a slow, painful death.

Upon listening to awesome bands like Iron Maiden, Dream Theater, Testament, Nevermore, Sonata Arctica, blah, blah, blah, you will find amazing, clean singing. James Labrie (Dream Theater), and Warrel Dane (Nevermore) actually trained in Opera before joining their respective bands.

Also, the term you are looking for is not 'screaming.' You find that in Post-hardcore, and similar genres. What you would be looking for are called 'growls.' They are executed differently, don't rape your throat if done properly, and sound much different.

I used to be really big on Metal, way back when. I always found the original Black Metal scene the best, though.. Dimmu and other second-gen acts can't touch Dead-Era Mayhem and Immortal. Cradle of Filth wouldn't know Black Metal if Varg Vikerness stabbed them all twenty three times, although I respect the band for their early style, combining Victorian Vampirism into the works of H.P. Lovecraft and Edgar Allen Poe. Danni Filth should stick to writing poetry and publish his works, his voice can't carry the material at all.

Just a few of some of the metal bands that I like off of the top of my head..

Blodsrit
Morbid Angel
Macabre
Immortal (probably my favorite BM act)
Judas Priest

Lol, you're making me think on this one.. There's loads more, I just can't recall them because I haven't listened to metal in months.

Try Testament for Thrash, specifically Low and The Gathering albums if you're into heavier thrash (their old stuff is a bit early Metallicaish but done better IMO, though The New Order and The Legacy are fucking excellent). I noticed you said you heard some of their stuff, they're one of my favorite bands out there, I suggest more for you. Also consider D.R.I, though they started as a punk band, their post-Crossover stuff is thrash.

Anyway I listen to a lot of the following..

Damnation A.D. (the best unknown band ever imo), Black Label Society, Testament, In Flames (before Come Clarity and STYE though, those albums blow), Danzig (Danzig is a real variety of music genre's though), Dark Tranquility, Damageplan, Pantera, D.R.I, and Suicidal Tendencies.

We are SPPF and we make ignorant and incorrect generalizations even in the face of evidence.

Metal is just as encompassing and brilliant as rock and rap, and it amazes me whenever folks dismiss any of the three.
