Microsoft planning to release HD-DVD drive 360 next year

For those of you who don't speak japanese,

The current 360 uses DVD drives but to compete with PS3, microsoft has decided that next gen DVD drives are a necessity to run high capacity high definition games. Microsoft will be adopting the HD-DVD standard which is the standard the company supports.

According to the publishing house EnterBrain(Tokyo) the sales figure in the first two days of sales in Japan is 62135pcs, which is below even the sales of the first xbox which was 120000pcs. The cause is blamed on delay in release dates of popular games.

Someone inform me if that is not an accurate translation, but I think it's pretty reputable. Discuss.

Umm...what happens to the gamers who already purchased a 360. Not every 360 gamer owns the 20GB HDD so microsoft can't release a world wide patch to play them. This would be easing out the hard core xbox fans that spent $300+ USD on their new console. I know these blu-ray and or HD-DVD drives will be more than neccesary a couple years down the road, and I felt a little upset microsoft refused to use them, but if they implemented this new technology in their games they would have to ease out some gamers or force them to purchase the HDD. This is the problem microsoft got themselves into by releasing their console so early instead of waiting for HD-DVD or blu-ray drives to become available. Xbox was a pretty good console and could've lasted a couple more years due to the massive 3rd party support it's getting right now.

That's probably why they won't do it. Microsoft have never said they will do this, just that they possibly could in the future, if they needed to. But I don't so blu-ray as that big a problem to Microsoft, it's just another one of Sony's bothced attempts to replace the media standard. It's never going to happen. And the only real advantage it gives them, is that they can use less discs. Okay, so a few 360 games may have to be on multiple discs, but is that so much of a problem? it never hurt the original PSX, or the Gamecube.

And if worst comes to worse, MS can always go ahead with this HD-DVD thing, it's far more likely to become media standard in the future, and I'm sure they'd give original 360 owners some kind of deal..
