Microsoft to make handheld game system

They have stated many times they have no interest in creating a hand hand console. I think even Microsoft know it would be a horrible idea, they need to focus on the 360, and not a handheld that is never going to be succesful.

They have however stated, they want to create some kind of mp3 player, which wouldn't be such a bad idea for them. Even though it would take a while for them to even start to rival Apple here, I think they could do with some actual competition. But considering the 360 has the ability to hook up to anything from computers, to mp3 players to digital cameras, Microsoft actually investing in some of those products themselves would really help.

But yeah, I think those Game Revolution guys are reading too much into it. If anything, it may share the Xbox name, but there is very little chance they're actually going to release a portable console.

Portable halo would be pretty cool but I'd rather them focus on 360 for now. 360 needs time to develop and if they announce a new portable gaming console they could cripple their new xbox. I know many people who would prefer a newer product than last years product even if it is technically "inferior". At least wait to 2007 before entering the handheld market, 2008 would be better.

Dought they'll do it. a portable gaming machine, that is. I've been supprised that Microsoft haven't made a rival for the iPod yet. So that parts quite probably. However, I really dought they'll be a portable Xbox in the next 2 years.

Very ture, very true. So if Microsfot do relase an "Xbox Walkabout" or whatever, it'll be a big hype but it wont happen for a while.

One of my Computer Engineering teachers said this about MS:

"Microsoft is slow to catch on, but once they do get into something, they're very persistant."

But whatever. If they follow Sony's approach, it'll be second best regardless as long as Nintendo keeps up with what its doing. Until they make an LiON battery that lasts for eight hours on movie mode that is. Which reminds me, what are they going to use for media? Cartridges are dominated by Nintendo while Sony monopolizes optical media, which Sony could sue if MS touches anything near the UMD design. Oh and which by the way, the UMD is greatly suited for portability, a naked disk would surely die on the road faster than a UMD cartridge.

You always have such cool stuff to say. Out of most people here, you sound the least biased. I have to respect that.

Ok, was wanting to comment on the Li-On batteries. They have an X-2 battery out. It allows me to watch about 6.5 - 7 hours of movies between charges. Takes awhile to recharge once it's dead though. True, it's not 8 hours of charge, but I don't mind. I am getting about 4.5 - 5 hours of charge on my portable DVD player. Plus, now that I can output the PSP to a TV, it has become more of a portable, portable DVD player. I have a Nintendo connection in my van with Audio/Video hookups. I can output the PSP to that and watch the movie on the TV if I want to. I do have to run the PSP off of the cigarette lighter though, as the TV converter needs power to operate. Sounding redundant here, but I can use the PSP TV converter and a portable DVD player as a monitor (yeah, that's redundant since I could just watch a DVD on it, right? - LOL.)

Gotta admit that the UMD's are pretty nice storage units. They don't do so good on their own, but if you get a little box and keep em nice and stored in, they can last forever. My problem with DVD's is that I got a book to put the DVD's in (to save space,) and ended up scratching the DVD's slightly when I pulled em out of the felt holders. I bought a book where I could put 100 DVD's in it. Got so gung ho that I bought DVD series. Got the Star Trek (1st version) full season and have been faithful with Smallville (all DVD's up to the present season.) Sometimes I convert the DVD's and watch em on the PSP, but it would be nice to have a way to carry / protect them without losing a lot of space.

Ok, now, about a Microsoft hand held. I think that could be AWESOME. If it were real, anyways. They could make a PDA sized gaming system with PC software as a backbone. Maybe a dual hard/drive system or something. You could flip between a PDA and/or gaming console. Yep, it would cost a lot. But, think about all you could get with it. It could be a way to keep the PC software from interfering with gaming and they would share the systems resources. Meaning, online gaming could be possible with a cellular connection like on a laptop. The unit wouldn't truly be as big as a laptop (or luggable - LOL,) but would have a decent sized screen to play games. There could be a mouse interface since there is a simulated mouse on most laptops. Or, you could just simply use a light pen (or whatnot). I dunno. There could be lots of possibilities if Microsoft decided to get into the game. But, again, I really doubt it would happen.

EDIT: Oh yeah, you asked about Media right? Well, just because someone uses memory cartridges doesn't mean that someone else can't do that same. Seems like I remember Sega, Nintendo, & Atari were all using some sort of cartridge. Going back further, there was a Tandy Color Computer that used cartridges too. There's always DVD's or whatnot too. Just depends on how big the system will be and what is integrated into it. Cartridges make sense, cause they are smaller and usually quicker. I think with Microsoft's capital, there are a lot of possibilities that they can use.

I'm on the doubtful side aswell about Microsoft making a portable game console/Media with games. I'm more thinking they'd make a MP3 player or something like that.

The only reason I think this is because first Microsoft said they weren't interested and secondly they've given Rare the go ahead to make 2 games for the DS. It'd be like helping the competition if they wanted to get into the portable gaming area. If you want to know more about Rare developing on the DS, it was mentioned on Rares official site and they were asking people what they wanted a while ago.

From what I've made of all the news about this possible Xbox-brand handheld, Microsoft want something that will compete with the iPod. Of course, they wouldn't be able to throw a simple MP3 player out there and expect it to compete...the iPod would eat it alive.

If Microsoft decided to release a handheld Xbox multi-media center that didn't play games, I definitely wouldn't buy it, and I doubt many others would, either. If it was capable of playing games as well, though...well, that's a different story altogether.

Have to agree here actually. Although I doubt Microsoft would make a handheld, if they did something like an iPod that had the ability to play games, etc it could actually be rather cool. But yeah, a straight up hand held console would be a horrible move for them, even Microsoft must know that, no matter how awesome they made it, the public would still hate it, for the sole reason it's Microsoft.

People really don't hate Microsoft that much, 80% or so of people use their operating system. If people hated them that much then they wouldn't make so much money, also the people who are using operating systems other than Windows don't always hate Microsoft, we just want a fairer OS market.

Why would they try to sell in the two of the hardest markets though? Noone was able challenge the dominance of the DS and PSP (eg. Gizmondo and the N-Gage) and the iPod has conquered and opened the MP3 market and shows no signs of failing either.
