in the prima game guide for emerald it says that that the best way to coax this island (mirage island) into view is to have a special pokemon in your party is that true and which pokemon is it.

That could be correct, each pkmn has a hidden number or so and that changes everyday, if it matches with the one from mirage island you see it, that's what I heard...

Mirage Island
The appearance of Mirage Island is completely random. There seems to be some sort of hidden value in each of your Pokemon that determines whether or not the man can see it. Just keep going back to that man in Pacifidlog with different Pokemon on different days. It's even rarer than the chance of finding a shiny, but you might be fortunate. The only things on Mirage Island, though, are some wild Wynaut and a patch of Liechi Berries, but *I think* you can get Liechi Berries from e-Cards anyway. Can anyone confirm this? You can also get a Liechi Berry from the EB Colosseum fix. See below. So Mirage Island isn't exactly one of the most rewarding ventures in the game, unless you don't have an e-Reader. The Liechi Berries are good, they raise Speed when HP drops below 1/3.

Alright, this has been answered. Since there were so many answers, I'll make it clear and just say that it's basically random, and any Pokemon is able to make it appear. It's really just all based on luck.
