One of the biggest debates in the Pokemon Anime boards are none other than Misty Vs. May. I guess since I have never given my Two Jagged Dimes I'm going to post my views on the whole debate. Lets start with Misty.
Misty: In My opinion, Misty was an uncaring female dog. During Kanto and the Orang Islands she had 0% faith in Ash. She threw insults at him whenever she got the chance, I.e. in "Mystery at the Lighthouse"
Ash: *Says his six Pokemon* And I caught them all fair and square!
Misty: Ash all your Pokemon followed you.
What a heartless, uncaring person. Only ONE of those Pokemon followed Ash and that was Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander were probably first befriended but in the end Ash either invited them (which is not the same as follow in my book) or had a battle with them. Butterfree and Pidgeotto he caught in a real battle. This shows me that Misty was just there to put Ash down. Much later on in Kanto, in I think the first Todd episode:
Misty: So Ash, have you thought of a way to get ANOTHER gym leader to feel sorry for you and give a badge for free? (Note: Its been awhile since I've seen these episodes so my quoting may be wrong.)
Sure, Ash didn't win most of those badges in a real battle but the only "pity" badge he got was the Boulder Badge. He won the cascade badge because he rescued Cerulean Gym, he got the Thunder Badge in a real battle, the Marsh Badge by making Sabrina give up due to laughter, he rescued Celadon gym and won the Rainbow badge, and by that point, his last badge was the Soul Badge which he won in a real battle. This is where I get my 0% faith theory from. Misty thought Ash sucked. I don't mean to get those Kanto shippers down (Screw off, I'll call it KANTO shipping if I want) but I really can't see where all this "Love for Ash" came from.
Then there was that issue with her Bike, that damn bike. Whenever it was appropriate, she always had to rub it in that Ash "owed" her a bike. Ash used her bike because it was a state of supreme emergency. Besides, it was just a bike that probably only cost $100 (despite what Ono's Manga said) which, being a gym leader, Misty had tons of. Fast Forwar all the way to "Gotta Catch you Later." Somehow, Nurse Joy of Viridian City managed to fix her bike. Ash is now happy to see that her bike was back. Being upset, Misty says something spiteful, acting like "thats all our relationship meant?" In my eyes, Misty was, in innuendo, female dogging abotu how ASH should have paid her for a new bike instead of getting hers fixed. Misty didn't care for Ash one bit, she only followed him to get her bike back, to put him down and to insult the ways he chose to be a trainer.
Not only was she uncaring for Ash, she also was uncaring for her Pokemon, they were TOTALLY shafted. Besides of course that egg thing that made the writers forget her chest size
Example: She captured her Horsea in episode 19 (Tentacool & Tentacruel). No one didn't even bother mentioning Horsea till episode 40 (Battling Eevee Bros), a whole 21 episodes from each other. I understand that Horsea can't battle out of water but from that time period, it seemed like she didn't even catch the darned thing. Ok, Horsea was acknowledge the next episode as they thought of a way to wake up Snorlax but lets see... Its next appearance was in Episode 60 (Beach Blank Out Blastoise) and you know what it did? Just stood there on Misty's shoulder, wow, 19 episodes from its last appearance and all it did was sit on Misty's shoulder pretty much unnoticable. At least its next appearance would be the next episode... where it gets the ultimate shaft. Misty, deciding how useless Horsea was and how pointless it was to catch it, dumps it off with her sisters, along with her BEST, at that time, Pokemon Starmie. Now she just has three other Pokemon left to enjoy the shafting, but only one of those got the real shaft. None other than Goldeen, yes it was with Misty all throughout her adventures with Ash and Brock but she still didn't even battle with it.
My final point on Misty: She was an uncaring female dog who only cared about compensation. She thought Ash sucked, didn't deserve the love he got from his Pokemon and tried to put him down whenever it was appropriate.
Hold on, stay in your seats, this thread is only half over. (This sure is a long post for me)
Its time for my review on May.
May was a rookie trainer just like Ash was at one point, but she didn't have Misty to put her down whenever she made a simple mistake like trying to catch Azurill without battling. No, this time May had a real teacher to help her. Ash sure has improved over the years and now does know that you can't catch a Pokemon by simply throwing a ball at it, but unlike what Misty would have done, Ash simply said "You can't catch a Pokemon by just throwing a Poke Ball." Where as Misty would have said "May you idiot, your the worst trainer there ever was, you can't just catch a Pokemon without battling it." Now on to similar comparisons I did with Misty.
Like what happened to Misty, Mays bike also got destroyed by Pikachu, yes she was upset at Ash for what happened to it but she decided not to hold a gripe about it. She chose to follow Ash not because she wanted him to pay her back, but she really thought Ash was a good trainer and would be a good mentor and a good friend.
May also had faith in Ash and always knew he could beat the Gym Leader of whatever city. Unlike Kanto and Orange Island Misty who probably has plans to go to the local tourist attraction after Ash's quick battle. Ash also had faith in May when she had her contests.
May also used her Pokemon in fair rotation. Yes, Torchic did get the shaft a little but, even though I like it a lot, it deserved it. Torchic was a little wimp who knew nothing but Ember and how to run into the nearest rock. This is exactly why it evovled, to bring out its true potential. Currently, her other three Pokemon has had fair usage as well. Yes, it was a little different because May had a reason to use them when Misty didn't.
Final Review for May: She is a sweet girl who actually cares about her friends, her Pokemon and can learn to accept things VERY easily.
Huff huff phew, thats the end of this very long post.
