Misty Vs. May. MY Views

Thriller

Its almost time
One of the biggest debates in the Pokemon Anime boards are none other than Misty Vs. May. I guess since I have never given my Two Jagged Dimes I'm going to post my views on the whole debate. Lets start with Misty.

Misty: In My opinion, Misty was an uncaring female dog. During Kanto and the Orang Islands she had 0% faith in Ash. She threw insults at him whenever she got the chance, I.e. in "Mystery at the Lighthouse"

Ash: *Says his six Pokemon* And I caught them all fair and square!

Misty: Ash all your Pokemon followed you.

What a heartless, uncaring person. Only ONE of those Pokemon followed Ash and that was Squirtle, Bulbasaur and Charmander were probably first befriended but in the end Ash either invited them (which is not the same as follow in my book) or had a battle with them. Butterfree and Pidgeotto he caught in a real battle. This shows me that Misty was just there to put Ash down. Much later on in Kanto, in I think the first Todd episode:

Misty: So Ash, have you thought of a way to get ANOTHER gym leader to feel sorry for you and give a badge for free? (Note: Its been awhile since I've seen these episodes so my quoting may be wrong.)

Sure, Ash didn't win most of those badges in a real battle but the only "pity" badge he got was the Boulder Badge. He won the cascade badge because he rescued Cerulean Gym, he got the Thunder Badge in a real battle, the Marsh Badge by making Sabrina give up due to laughter, he rescued Celadon gym and won the Rainbow badge, and by that point, his last badge was the Soul Badge which he won in a real battle. This is where I get my 0% faith theory from. Misty thought Ash sucked. I don't mean to get those Kanto shippers down (Screw off, I'll call it KANTO shipping if I want) but I really can't see where all this "Love for Ash" came from.

Then there was that issue with her Bike, that damn bike. Whenever it was appropriate, she always had to rub it in that Ash "owed" her a bike. Ash used her bike because it was a state of supreme emergency. Besides, it was just a bike that probably only cost $100 (despite what Ono's Manga said) which, being a gym leader, Misty had tons of. Fast Forwar all the way to "Gotta Catch you Later." Somehow, Nurse Joy of Viridian City managed to fix her bike. Ash is now happy to see that her bike was back. Being upset, Misty says something spiteful, acting like "thats all our relationship meant?" In my eyes, Misty was, in innuendo, female dogging abotu how ASH should have paid her for a new bike instead of getting hers fixed. Misty didn't care for Ash one bit, she only followed him to get her bike back, to put him down and to insult the ways he chose to be a trainer.

Not only was she uncaring for Ash, she also was uncaring for her Pokemon, they were TOTALLY shafted. Besides of course that egg thing that made the writers forget her chest size :p

Example: She captured her Horsea in episode 19 (Tentacool & Tentacruel). No one didn't even bother mentioning Horsea till episode 40 (Battling Eevee Bros), a whole 21 episodes from each other. I understand that Horsea can't battle out of water but from that time period, it seemed like she didn't even catch the darned thing. Ok, Horsea was acknowledge the next episode as they thought of a way to wake up Snorlax but lets see... Its next appearance was in Episode 60 (Beach Blank Out Blastoise) and you know what it did? Just stood there on Misty's shoulder, wow, 19 episodes from its last appearance and all it did was sit on Misty's shoulder pretty much unnoticable. At least its next appearance would be the next episode... where it gets the ultimate shaft. Misty, deciding how useless Horsea was and how pointless it was to catch it, dumps it off with her sisters, along with her BEST, at that time, Pokemon Starmie. Now she just has three other Pokemon left to enjoy the shafting, but only one of those got the real shaft. None other than Goldeen, yes it was with Misty all throughout her adventures with Ash and Brock but she still didn't even battle with it.

My final point on Misty: She was an uncaring female dog who only cared about compensation. She thought Ash sucked, didn't deserve the love he got from his Pokemon and tried to put him down whenever it was appropriate.

Hold on, stay in your seats, this thread is only half over. (This sure is a long post for me)

Its time for my review on May.

May was a rookie trainer just like Ash was at one point, but she didn't have Misty to put her down whenever she made a simple mistake like trying to catch Azurill without battling. No, this time May had a real teacher to help her. Ash sure has improved over the years and now does know that you can't catch a Pokemon by simply throwing a ball at it, but unlike what Misty would have done, Ash simply said "You can't catch a Pokemon by just throwing a Poke Ball." Where as Misty would have said "May you idiot, your the worst trainer there ever was, you can't just catch a Pokemon without battling it." Now on to similar comparisons I did with Misty.

Like what happened to Misty, Mays bike also got destroyed by Pikachu, yes she was upset at Ash for what happened to it but she decided not to hold a gripe about it. She chose to follow Ash not because she wanted him to pay her back, but she really thought Ash was a good trainer and would be a good mentor and a good friend.

May also had faith in Ash and always knew he could beat the Gym Leader of whatever city. Unlike Kanto and Orange Island Misty who probably has plans to go to the local tourist attraction after Ash's quick battle. Ash also had faith in May when she had her contests.

May also used her Pokemon in fair rotation. Yes, Torchic did get the shaft a little but, even though I like it a lot, it deserved it. Torchic was a little wimp who knew nothing but Ember and how to run into the nearest rock. This is exactly why it evovled, to bring out its true potential. Currently, her other three Pokemon has had fair usage as well. Yes, it was a little different because May had a reason to use them when Misty didn't.

Final Review for May: She is a sweet girl who actually cares about her friends, her Pokemon and can learn to accept things VERY easily.

Huff huff phew, thats the end of this very long post.

I just want to make sure before I make a fool out of myself - that post was supposed to be satire, right?

If not....... good GOD.

That was the best explanation I've ever heard. I'm almost speachless. All that you said wads the truth so I'm giving you're thread 5 STARS! Misty sucks.

Interesting stuff. But most of it is true, so I'll agree with you that Misty is cold hearted (which is part of her character anyway...at least, I think so...)

Uhh... the "Love for ash" thing came from the fact the love/hate thing with the average anime hero and the tomboy is an horribly overused cliché. Not to mention Misty warmed up to him and after some time only used the bike excuse to travel around with Ash. ¬¬ AND they had shippy moments, especially in the OI saga. And the bike thing in Ono's manga was because that's what it costed in the game, since they couldn't allow to buy one bike and get another with the bike voucher, resulting in a trainer with two bikes.

As for May, she's also a cliche. But I don't think that the fact she's nice makes Advanceshipping more valid than Pokeshipping, if that was your point. (Note that I loathe both, so I'm not biased) The relation Satoshi has with Haruka is more of a Younger sister-Older brother thing.

And... what was the point of that? o_O Are you trying to prove a ship/a girl is better than another?

Heh Interesting, Of course you realise that people are going to disagree (personally I don't dislike Misty as much as you do) but if that's what you believe, then so be it. You'd probably be better off posting in a Misty/May thread than creating one yourself, but what's done is done I guess.

KANTO shipping? I've never heard of that, heh

And... what was the point of that? o_O Are you trying to prove a ship/a girl is better than another?
It thought it just was Churly Ryan's opinion on May and Misty in general..

You're basing that on Kanto!Misty, though. What is your opinion of AG Misty?

That about sums up my feelings.

Funny, really. I have no doubts that if the original poster had said that May was an evil witch, Misty was a paragon of sainthood, and Pokeshipping was superior to Advanceshipping, the thread would have exploded in an outpouring of outraged May-fans and anti-Pokeshippers before being closed after less than a day. But hey, I'm getting used to the phenomenal pro-May/anti-Misty bias on this forum now. After all, as we know, character bashing is not encouraged on SPPF - unless the character you're bashing is disliked by the 'elite posters' on the board, that is, in which case, free-for-all bash-fest on the worthless b*tch! Whoooooo! Remember, you can say whatever ridiculous, prejudiced, unfair, untrue things you want, provided you're not disagreeing with anyone important.

Yeah, ok!
Considering that Bulbagarden is heavily pro-Misty and anti-May, it kind of evens out.

Well there are more users here, but you get my point. More or less.

Or something.

Thing is, all I said IS true.

And I didn't use AG Misty for my points because

1) I haven't seen her BF episodes
2) She has so far only been in 2 AG episodes in America
3) I haven't seen any Chronicles
4) AG Misty WAS better than Kanto/Johto Misty. Thats why the writers gave her a break. So they can entirely replan her knowing that they took her in the wrong direction.

And why do I chose to say Kanto shipping and not Poke shipping? Simple, poke shipping is too basic, and it makes it seem like a human x pokemon ship. Kanto shipping makes more sense and it hasn't been used.

Well, I'm glad I'm not the only one who noticed that...

and since I should be on topic

I don't mind either Misty or May..I may have some little issues, but I don't hate them or anything

I'm keeping my opinion of the ships to myself for now

Yeah, ok!

Thus the question becomes: How does one become one of these "elite posters?"

You've posted with me in the same threads for nearly 2 years and you still don't know how? C'mon Chaos, haven't I taught you anything? :p

Yoshi!!!
From my point of view May and Misty are in a tie.
'Cause maybe May is sweet and all of that, but Misty on the other side said some sweet things. I can't remember, but try to remember the episode with the inloved little boy and girl that had a female and male nidoran and at the end something happened and misty said "maybe they cannot be the only new couple" to ash.

I normally prefer may than misty. But I made a good point at that.

Maybe my post is a little confusing but try to understand it.

Oh, seriously.

Sure some characters have flaws. No one's perfect. You can't expect the writers to make a character that every single person will enjoy. Get over it. Some people are fans of both Misty and May.

So enough with the complaining about Misty being "uncaring" and such, or you'll have pretty angry Misty fans coming in here.

am I an "Elite Poster?", since you're an expert at elite posting... I just wanted to know weither I'm one to... :p

seriously though... that's some pretty flawed reasoning...

while Misty was a tad harsh to Ash, that was because Ash completely trashed her bike... had they met under different circumstances, their relationship would be more like Ash and May's...

and please tell me you didn't find Misty temper halirous... because it was one of the reasons why I got hooked on the anime in the first place.

It *was* hilarious...until Johto rolled in and the writers went to pieces trying to decide on her character's direction. Then it just became utterly ridiculous as the girl I thought had finally warmed up to our young trainer from Pallet wildly seesawed between being frozen solid to trying to BBQ Ash---and sometimes even his pokemon, where in the past she had cultivated a strong bond with Ash's pokemon and at least once tried to use that to sabotage him---at the wrong times and for the wrong reasons.

When May joined the party, she provided a lot of potential as a fresh-from-the-box trainer(who *also* didn't like pokemon when we first encountered her, which was a real first for a new trainer). It also helped that---with a less-experienced traveling partner---Ash finally got some chances to shine that would have been virtually *impossible* with Johto Misty hanging around to spoil the moments. Sadly, some of it's been squandered(grumble*far too few tag battles*grumble*Petalburg Gym-centered angst getting shoved under the rug*grumble*Squirtletwo*grumble), but there 's a chance for things to improve in the future(if only the writers would take it further than they have thus far).

You know, I had a feeling that this topic would come back from the grave sooner or later...

I do agree with you on how Misty wasn't funny anymore when they got to Jotho. They didn't really give her a good goal to work towards, her only "purpose" in the show was to be a companion of Ash's. Her "goal" in the end was almost exactly like Ash's except that she only trained one type of pokemon. She wasn't even on some sort of quest.

You know, I had a feeling that this topic would come back from the grave sooner or later...

indeed, it's just like a zombie that just won't die, it reminds me of a topic I once created on another fourm... it was necromaced like six times over the course of 3 years...
