Mixing Sprites?

Well, most of the people that have crit my sprites said that when you mix, don't copy and paste. But every guide I have seen, says to copy and paste. Dragonfree's website says that, How To Sprite says that, Wisest Pikachu's tutorial says that.....so if all of you guys are telling me to don't copy and paste, why do the guides say to copy and paste!?!?

*Sigh* We mean not to just take a part from a Pokemon off the sprite, slap it on a Pokemon and recolor it.

You have to reshade it if you want it to look good. Sometimes, you don't have to though, if it already looks good.

Lot's of people do that. For example, the put a part of say, Rayquaza on their sprite. If they put it where there is no lightsource, and just recolor it, the sprite looks bad. Why? If you put that on a part with no lightsource, that makes the sprite looks like it has to lightsources. Which is what I used to do when I sprited a few months ago.

EDIT: Example:

See how the lightest colors are everywhere? This is what I mean. (Even though this is a scratch.)

However, sometimes you need to scratch if there is truely no way to may a certain part in the right pose. Otherwise, you could either edit or flip the part.

Okay, it's beter but still needs work. The wings still look like Flygon's because Milotic's sprite is facing the left while Flygon's is facing diagonally downwards right. So, it looks like Milotic's wings are doing and impossible movement from it's body. I'm sure that in the guides for that particular sprite it suggests just flipping the flat-looking wing and placing it on the left. =/ All i'd suggest is looking about to see what people have done to make there mixes. =/
