MTG COTD: Flowstone Overseer

    Flowstone Overseer - Nemesis. Rare
    2RRR: Creature - Beast
    RR: Target creature gets +1/-1 until end of turn.
    The rebels couldn't see where the roar was coming from. Then they saw it was coming from everywhere.

    Awesome card. 5 for a 4/4 with an ability is fair enough, eh? The ability is pretty sweet. I LOVE abilities that gives you options. Cards like Consult the Necrosages, the Entwine cards, etc. For this card? Remove pesky 1/1s or give your creatures a boost. Pretty sweet.

    5 for a 4/4 is excellent, and the ability is pretty decent too, you can pump your own creature or kill off some X/1 creature(s) your opponent has. I like it because using the ability doesn't cause the creature to tap, but it would be a little nicer if its casting cost were something like R, pay 1 life or 1R, pay 1 life, rather than RR. If that were the case, its usefulness would be a tradeoff since you'd probably be down to 10-12 life by the time you accumulate that much mana. 3.5/5

    A nice card, the 4/4 body for five mana is good and giving each of your creatures the Flowstone ability is decent.I only wish it's ability did not cost RR. 3/5

    Compared to a certain other red 5 mana 4/4, namely Kumano, Master Yamibushi, Flowstone Overseer is vastly weaker IMO.

    Here are the major differences from what I see:
    -Overseer cost 2RRR while Kumano costs 3RR, making Kumano easier to play in non-mono-red decks.
    -Overseer's ability does +1/-1 and costs RR. Kumano deals 1 point of damage and costs 1R. Thus, Overseer can kill Indestructible creatures, but Kumano doesn't need to attack to hurt players. Also, Kumano's ability doesn't hurt your own creatures toughness should you want to use the ability in combat. Again, Kumano is more splashable.
    -Kumano is a legend and Overseer is not. Making Kumano victim of the Legends Rule.
    -Kumano removes creatures he helps send to the graveyard from the game. Overseer does not. Making Kumano more aggressive against decks with reanimation.
    -Overseer is a Beast while Kumano is HUman Shaman (IIRC). No biggie, but Beasts have more access to many spells/abilities from Onslaught block. i.e. Krosan Warchief, while Shaman have no special spells/abilities that work only for Shaman.

    Taking these things into account, I personally feel Kumano is a better card despite Kumano not being a very highly rated card.

    Pretty good card for a cheap cost with a decent ability, but the simple fact that many red cards that are in my mind right now, simply cannot stand the 1 toughness reduction.
    Except for the beasts, but I have yet to see a beast deck yet and cannot comment on them.
    As a card, there are better, but it is pretty good.
