As I've had the game for quite some time, and 3 restarts. I can tell you this:
Start out with whatever.
My favorite's Naetoru, too.
Catch a Mukkuru. That'll do for now.
Catching a Subomi is nice here, but it will take to about the 25 or so for him to evolve, and you can catch Roselias just next to the fourth town.
Later on, catch, after the first gym, a Karankushi [Snelios/Shelios whatever]
as Toritodon is a very nice wall, is pretty strong [and so is Karan]
and can learn Surf.
From here on, keep your 3-4 team and keep playing until the fourth gym.
There, either:
Catch a Gregguru [Croaklurk or whatever] or Scorpi at the safari.
Both are very good, although a bit hard to raise [Scropi, I'm looking at you]
Roselia is nice too.
Team: 4-6
Then just get a Lucario before/after the 6th gym.
After it, you can catch a Fukamaru which becomes the deadly Landshark.
Sneasel/Weavile is nice just before the League..
My team, after beating the League today:
Rozureido lv56
Goukazaru lv56
Toritodon lv52
Weavile lv58
Gaburaisu lv60
So yeah, I pretty much followed that pattern,
except:
Mukkuhawk was at my second game, and so was Dokurogu
Lucario and Dorapion were at my first game.
And now training an Aerodactyl, level 21.
BTW, my Lucario evolved at level 13. How proilicious.
