My view on Pichu (Super Smash Bros. Melee)

Black Murder Heavangelon

Ow! Ow! Harder! Ow!
Basically, I'd admit Pichu is weak, but that's what i like in Pichu. The ability to humiliate the opponent with someone like Pichu. But i still can't understand the fact that someone would bash Pichu alot.

If you haven't noticed, Pichu's quick speed may not seem to make up for it's low defense, but only certain people who have mastered Pichu can put that speed to good use. Pichu has a distinct ability to overpower top-tier characters. I haven't offically proven this, only because my brothers aren't as good as I am, but anyone could tell Pichu would totally pwn Bowser, Ganondorf, AND Mewtwo (one at a time though >.>) with the right fighting.

Here's a litte tip though:

At Hyrule Temple, there's a ledge where Pichu's thunder will constantly hit the higher leveled floor the moment it's brought out. Standing in the confined area of the field will have Pichu's thunder strike the area above constantly. Plus, the area is reboundable, meaning it'll take a couple of strikes to keep Pichu off the field. The only sacrifice is that Pichu will keep hitting the walls, a lot.

Sure, Pichu was given the speed to get items that pop around the field, but certain items can help him. The cloaking device is a highly valued item amongst computers and players alike, since it keeps the opponent from getting damage. The opponent still flinches though, but the cloaking device is very valuable when playing as Pichu, since it keeps him from getting damage by his own thundershock. Pichu was also given light weight to make it true to all other fictitious Pichu, but the Metal Box can change that!

Here's a little strategy tip:

Pichu's standard A in midair can knock opponents away depending on the accumilated damage. When an opponent is attempting to get back on the field, jump off the edge towards the opponent, press A hitting the opponent, jump again then press A again to hit him or her once more, then use Pichu's quick attack to get back to the edge again. The opponent will have been knocked away too far to return to the edge. Pichu is best used for this strategy, since using other characters for this strategy will likely backfire.

Pichu's only flaw, amongst the low defense, is that he can't take on mid-tier characters. Mario, Yoshi, Mr.G&W are examples. They have normal speed, power, and weight to counter any move Pichu has. But with little coordination, Pichu is winnable.

Hint: Pichu's downward A in midair can counter UpB moves, especially the dangerous Falcon/Dark dive.

Well, theres my rant for the day. Just needed to get this off my chest.

That's an interesting view on Pichu. I hope in Brawl they fix his moveset so that he doesn't hurt himself so much or can find a way to make the damage worthwile, or up his defence a bit so he doesn't rack up damage so fast. But, its true, Pichu owns people who fall fast, like Link, YL (yeah, he falls fast), Bowser and the like. But in a world of competitve Fox and Sheik, Pichu is sadly majorly overshadowed.

I withdraw reluctantly.
I think Pichu is a good Smash character, but you definitely need to know how you use him.

First, he doesn't do good with straight on attacks. Pichu should be constantly on the move and attack when he has the opprotunity. It isn't because he is bad, it is because that is just the way you use him.

Pichu has moves that damage himself; conserve his moves. Use his electric moves at the right time, but even then, use them sparingly. You shouldn't use Agility at it fullest unless you absolutely need to. You can evade getting hit by your own Thunder. Picking up items to use will help you limit the times you damage yourself. If you get the Cloaking Device, you won't get damaged, so you can use your moves a little bit more, but don't leave your lightweight body open to attack.

Pichu also has some really strong moves. His Thunder can be used to strike the opponent pretty hard. I would like to note his Skull Bash which is seriously strong when fully charged. However, he doesn't necessary have the strongest of moves.

Remember that Pichu is very agile, and his small size can avoid attacks, but he is the lightest character in the game. He also can damage himself which will add on to how far he can fly. Use the moves sparingly and use your advantages that you have to avoid these perilous conditions.

I think that most animosity towards Pichu doesn't derive from his moveset, but because of who he is (or for me at least). I have no problem with including a character that is purposefully weak so that less skilled players can have a chance against more experienced ones. However, I feel a better character can be used to fill this role. I don't see why it needs to be Pichu, no matter how adorable and "KYYYUTE!!" he is. Somebody like Muddy Mole could be a great alternative. So I'm not opposed to Pichu because he's so weak, I'm just opposed to Pichu because...well...because he's Pichu.

Oh, please. I don't like to be simplistic about things, so I admire your well thought out view. But come on, the guy hurts himself everytime he uses electricity. I hope that in SSBB (Brawl, for you clueless people) Pichu is swiftly removed.

Well I bet you anything he won't be. Just because he hurts himself doesn't mean he's bad. To gain something you must lose someting. In this case if you use his speed and rack up hits I'm sure no one likes getting hit by a full blown skull bash. I believe Pichu's is slightly stronger then Pikachu's.

That doesn't mean the developers should've gone ahead and make a blatantly poor character. The fans would've just determined on their own whoever would take the title of "worst character", and that character (according to most tier systems, Bowser) still has a far better premise than Pichu.

If you haven't noticed, Pichu's quick speed may not seem to make up for it's low defense, but only certain people who have mastered Pichu can put that speed to good use. Certain characters who have mastered any character can put them to good use. Also, Bowser and Mewtwo are not considered high-tier characters AT ALL (Ganondorf is, but isn't nearly as high a threat at tournament levels as Marth, Sheik, Fox, Falco, and Captain Falco seem to be).

At Hyrule Temple, there's a ledge where Pichu's thunder will constantly hit the higher leveled floor the moment it's brought out. Standing in the confined area of the field will have Pichu's thunder strike the area above constantly.

Pikachu could presumably do the same thing, and that enclosed area can helps all lightweight characters. And anyway, that's just one stage-by the same token, Pichu performs terribly on Brinstar (just for an example).

Hmm...never knew that...interesting.

Well, that was a pretty good guide for using actually using Pichu, but those points still don't really justify him as being a character (especially in SSBB).

Incidentally, I'd like to point out that they made Pichu's special attacks actually STRONGER than Pikachu's (with the exception of its B^). Since this doesn't really make actual sense, it would appear they did this just so Pichu wouldn't be WORSE.

I agree with you. It just take more skill for him to be good. Except for the computers. Even at Level 9, they're still bad with Pichu. They better not remove him, he was cool. They just need a new moveset. I hate having clones.

I despise having Pichu in SSBM, because it's nothing more than a watered-down clone of a battler that was weak to begin with, was only planted in the game for the purpose of advertising, and occupies a space that could be used for a more worthwhile character like Diddy Kong, Meta-Knight, or Samuari Goru.
The only thing I like about it is being able to ping around so actively, but in my opinion, they should have given that extra-speed to Pikachu rather than include its pre-evo.

Hao Kaiser

Aww... Crap.
I really hope they don't end up removing Pichu. I'd much rather have Pichu than Snake, not that I'm against the whole 3rd party thing, it's just that I'd rather have more Nintendo people instead of 3rd party guys.

Diddy Kong, Meta-Knight, or Samuari Goru.
Why on earth would they put Samurai Goru in SSB? Seriosly, I still don't understand how they put Falcon into SSB, we don't need another F-Zero guy. There are only like, 5 or 6 F-Zero games total, so we don't need more than one guy from that series. I understand you wanting Meta-Knight in there, because... he's crazy cool, but they're putting him in Brawl, so thats all good. Diddy Kong? Bleh.

But anyways, Clones suck, but atleast Pichu is sorta different than Pikachu. Marth and Roy play almost exactly the same, aside from Roy's attack hurting him. Ganon is slower and stronger (I think), so he's okay. Young Link... Meh, his arrows are on fire. Yay. If anything, Dr. Mario should get a lot more crap than Pichu. He has different clothes and he throws pills rather than fireballs. He could have easily been a costume, and they could've put a new charector in. But who knows, this could all be biased since I enjoy using Pichu.

Any player who is good enough hardly ever uses B attacks anyway. Smash attacks are he way to beat opponents and who uses Thunder Shock with Pichu anyway? The only B moves you use are B^ to get back on screen, B> (if you really need it) and BV and you simply avoid getting hit yourself. Honestly, it's not that hard.

Pichu is a brilliant character. It does annoy me that he's a clone but that can be changed easily. He's a challenging character. Heck, Roy hurts himself with his charged up B attacks more than Pichu's BV move, should we hate Roy then? Of course not. Pichu's speed and fast combination of moves make him far superior to Pikachu who is ridiculously slow compared to Pichu. I can't win all the time with Pikachu and yet I've only lost with Pichu twice. He's a brilliant character and better not be removed form SSBB.

Mikau

Better then you
I don't really like Pichu that much. I'd rather have a slower Pikachu then a faster Pichu that hurts itself whenever it uses an electrical attack. I really hope they do remove Pichu in SSBB to tell you the truth.

I agree with Bulk. Sometimes the original isn't always as useful as the clone. I mean, sure, Pichu hurts himself, and some of the other clones are heavy/light but they all play diffrently. I mean, really, I'm WAY better with Young Link then Link, and just because he's light and not as powerful doesn't mean he is crappy. I think he's better than Link for the reasons Pichu is better than Pikachu, and because he can jump, unlike Link, who can barely recover, and can't use some of his best moves well (Av Areial).

One of the main goals in Melee was to make all the charecters balanced, and they are. But most people only see the flaws in a charecter. And sometimes, you can work around them. If your Pichu, lay off the B moves unless you need them. If you''re playing a light charecter, find ways to counter smashes, or a way to not get hit as much (yes, it is possible). I've been up to 300+% with tons of lighter chareters, Pichu included. So, please, just because he's light and hurts himself, don't dismiss him.

Grammer

RUH OH!!!111
Marth is faster, so is captain falcon, not to mention he can't really knock opponents off, due to low attack. No offense, but I don't really see your point. :/

One of my friends has completely mastered Pichu. I like to think I'm pretty good at melee, but he's amazing. He can reflect attacks with his shield fairly reliably, point dodge just about anything, and basically make himself nearly impossible to hit. I think he should be kept in Brawl, despite the fact that I don't use him. (I'm a Pikachu user)

This is nice but you guys need to see this rare footage of Pichu's shining moment.

Just goes to show to never underestimate the underestimated. (anyone who knows what song that is from gets a cookie. :D)

EDIT: One more thing. When fully charged, Pichu's Skull Bash will bypass any projectile. Shadow ball, Thundershock, fireball, super charged scope shots, you name it. Don't get quirky though. It will only bypass one.

lol. Oh please, what is this an episode of full house? =P

I wouldnt pick Pichu for a serious game, or casual play. He's slow, hurts himself, and he's a faily large headed target. Pichu is universaly (worldwide) viewed as the worst character in the game. You may want to like him, but to attempt to make him seem like he is in some way a playable fighter is just plain retarded/silly.

SLOW?!? WTF are you chatting about? Pichu is one of the fastest characters in the game. He's not a large headed target. Sure he has a large head, doesn't mean he's easy to hit. Pikachu is easier to hit. Mewtwo is universaly (worldwide) viewed as the worse character in the game. And he is a playable fighter, watch that video Black Murder Heavangelon posted.
