Mysterious Dungeon Starters

In Mysterious Dungeon Red, you start out with a fire starter, and in Blue you start with a water starter... right?

But I've heard that someone started as Machop, and Serebii started as a Bulbasaur (according to the game pages). So can you start with Pokemon other than the fire/water starters?

To elaborate more, at the beginning of the game you're faced with a bunch of questions to answer. What questions you are asked is chosen randomly, however depending on the questions you receive and your answer to them you are turned into a different Pokemon out of:

Bulbasaur
Charmander
Squirtle
Pikachu
Meowth
Psyduck
Machop
Cubone
Eevee
Chikorita
Cyndaquil
Totodile
Treecko
Torchic
Mudkip
Skitty

There's been nothing saying the list is different for the two versions, so for now it can only be assumed that both Red and Blue have this same list of Pokemon.

apparently they ask you these questions to determ ine your starter but i cant read japanese so im messed up >_<

The questions are random...so there is no exact way to get a particular pokemon...

I found from a japanese site that your gender (the last question) determines which starters you will have/not have.
These starters are for male only: Machop, Meowth or Psyduck? (that site has some contradictions), Cyndaquil
These starters are for female only: Chikorita, Skitty, Eevee
