Chapter 1: Welcome to Terras
Chapter Rating: G
Cursing: None
Gore/Violence: None
Stuff: None

In the land of Terras thrive creatures known as Poke'Mon, similar to those found in the nations of Johto, Kanto, Hoenn, and Shinou. Due to the large population of various species of Poke'Mon and the extensive fossil record, scientists have long believed that Terras may have been the origin of all Poke'Mon.

This theory is reinforced by the fact that evidence of the first Human-Poke'Mon interaction is found here: Apricot Poke'Balls that could possibly still contain ancient Poke'Mon. These artifacts, along with many others are put under special guard at the International Museum of Natural History which can be found in Aquara City, the capital of Terras.

More differences exist still between the Terras region when compared to the Johto/Kanto mainland and Hoenn; Terras is actually a region completely made up of volcanic islands. The largest island actually holds six cities, while the other eight are spread out among the smaller islands.

Due to the fact that most all of Terras' cities are spread out, enormous highways were built long ago between the largest island and three others. This highway, started nearly fifty years ago, is still under construction as many in the government hope to eventually make the highway spread to the seven most populous islands. (The last two islands are completely uninhabited by humans and has no modern structures built on them. One is a large swamp and rainforest-like isle, while the other is actually part of a large mountain range and volcano. The fact that both islands are home to hundreds of Poke'Mon each makes them popular stops for trainers.) Until the highway is completed, boat travel is the fastest and most convenient way to get around.

Due to the fact that a lot of Terras still remains undeveloped and due to consistent crime throughout the islands, the Poke'Mon Association has created specialized rules for trainers in Terras:

- All Trainers are to be placed in squads assigned to them by the Poke'Mon Association immediatly after graduating from Poke'Mon Training Academies; they will remain in these squads until the age of 18 years.

- The squad will be made up of three trainers each and will be given for the first two months an experienced trainer to show them the basics for Poke'Mon battles, capturing, and training.

- In order to compete in the Poke'Mon League challenge, all three members of a squad must earn the Eight Poke'Mon Gym Badges, except for special circumstances. (A squadmember decides to enter alone.)

- After the age of 18 years, trainers can continue to stay with their squads or to go on their own to explore the world.

- All trainers must recieve a Poke'Dex, Poke'Techie/Poke'Gear/Poke'Nav, and a starting Poke'Mon from the Poke'Mon Academy.

- After completing the Poke'Mon League challenge in Terras, a squad/trainer can choose to compete again or compete in one of the other League challanges in Kanto, Johto, Hoenn, and Shinou.

- Any trainer found to be commiting illegal acts anywhere will have their licenses and Poke'Mon confiscated.

Welcome to Terras, the Beginning Land.

Gregory Breal smiled as he walked into the Terras Poke'Mon Academy. After his eleventh birthday the year before, his parents had decided that Greg should have the chance to become an official Poke'Mon trainer and so had sent him all the way from Pyre Village to Aquara City so he could attend the academy this year. By the next summer he would be ready to go out on his journey. And with a Poke'Mon too, he thought. Ever since he could remember he had wanted to own and train a Poke'Mon, and now he would have a chance to do that.

Still smiling, Greg read over the list of classes he would have. Poke'Mon Communication, Trainers Ed., Poke'Mon Interraction, Battle class, and Science/Math. Greg didn't see the point of having Math class or Science class, but he didn't care. After all this he would be able to travel the world, collecting and training Poke'Mon, and one day...becoming the Poke'Mon master! Yeah, Greg thought to himself, "A Poke'Mon master..."

"Excuse me, did you say something?"

Greg was startled; no one had spoken to him at all today. He looked up from where he sat on the school benches to see a pretty blonde girl looking at him quizzically. She had big green eyes and a slender build; she almost looked like she was modeling. She probably could if she wanted to, Greg thought sheepishly.

"Oh, no. Sorry, I was thinking outloud," Greg said shyly. He got mad at himself suddenly; he didn't want to blush infront of this girl. It was only then that he noticed that three or four other pretty girls had also come out of no where. Come on...don't blush...Don't forget, first impressions are everything, Greg begged of himself. Awkwardly, he stood up.

Greg wasn't much taller than the blonde girl, even if he was 5'5''. He stuck out his hand to shake and said, "Hi, I'm Greg Breal."

The girl seemed slightly surprised. Greg took one look at her face and began to mentally bash himself again. You idiot, you don't even know her... Greg knew then that he must have blushed because the girls who stood next to the blonde all began to giggle. Greg was nearly blown away when the girl took his hand and shook.

"Nice to meet you Greg Breal. I'm Jennifer Sullivan," she said in a sweet and kind voice. Greg's face was beet red now, and he felt so shy now that he tried to back away slowly only to trip over the bench behind him. The girls all began to howl at this, but Jennifer merely smiled and knelt over to help Greg up.

Once on both of his feet, he gave a hurried "thank you" and walked as quickly as possible away. Once he felt he was far enough away, Greg went and sat on the concrete stairs near the front doors. "Idiot," Greg said to himself, and bashed his forehead. He hoped that he would never get into a situation like that again. Unfortunately, he felt deep down inside, it was probably something unavoidable in life.

Sighing and regaining his composure, Greg got up and waited for the bell to ring. Hopefully class would get his mind off everything. Greg almost laughed at that thought. It was the first time he had ever wanted to go to class for anything.

---

Jennifer Sullivan was not one of the most popular girls in school, but she was considered one of the smartest and prettiest. The fact that she had many friends combined with that would make one think that Jenn was a social butterfly when infact she is extremely shy and has a hard time talking to people she doesn't know very well. She had a suspicion that this fact was not known to one Greg Breal.

"Wow Jenn! Class hasn't even started and you have a new boyfriend," Kassy teased, pulling at Jennifer's blonde hair. The other girls giggled along with Kassy. Jenn grabbed Kassy's hand and pushed it away.

"Oh come on Kassy. You're just jealous that you didn't get to hold his hand." There were some surprised laughs and shrieks brought up from the group because of that. Kassy pinched Jenn and pouted in an extremely exaggerated way.

Kassy was, in all ways, Jenn's best friend. They had been in school together all their lives and even lived fairly close to each other. Kassy knew everything about Jenn, and it was likewise in Jenn's case, so their frequent insulting and joking of each other was a sight anyone would recognize as normal, unless you were someone who just didn't know them at all.

"He was pretty cute, Jenn," Mariah chimed in, whose comment was quickly followed by a chorus of 'oh's.

Many people were surprised by the sight of Mariah, Kassy, and Jenn together. The three were best friends, but they seemed nothing alike. While Jennifer was slender and pretty, Kassy was about the same height but slightly overweight and with frizzy red hair usually pulled back into a poneytail. Mariah, however, was very small and skinny with jet black hair and seemed to glow. While Jennifer was mild mannered and Kassy loud, Mariah found a balance between the two.

Jenn playing patted Mariah on the head, smiled, and said, "Well, if you say so."

Kassy laughed and was soon joined by the others. "What do you think of Mr. Breal, Jenn?" she asked.

Jenn shrugged and said simply, "He seems sweet, but I would have to get to know him better. Maybe we'll have some classes together and I can learn more about him." In truth, Jennifer had actually thought he was pretty cute. He was about her height, with dark brown hair, a handsome face, and beautiful eyes. But he seems uncertain...scared maybe.

Kassy sighed and Mariah rolled her eyes, the two of them obviously displeased by her answer. "Come on, Jenn," Mariah said, "You out of all us us should have a boyfriend! It's coming to that time, you know. And you could practically have anyone you want; I mean, you are the prettiest girl in school!"

Although this was followed by some murmers of agreement, Jenn stopped it with a shrug as she often answered such questions and comments. "I'm just waiting for the right person," she said.

Kassy raised an eyebrow at this. "And who is this right person, Jennifer Sulliven?"

Jennifer smiled, looking at a taller boy dressed in black and said, "I'll know sooner or later." Kassy and Mariah sighed and appeared to surrender to this, dropping the subject of boys entirely. Such petty things could wait; for now, it was of utmost importance to figure out what nail polish would be used for first period classes.

---

There were two things Greg Breal realized after he left from the Student Introductury Assembly. One was that there were only about two hundred students at this school. The second was that this year may be more interesting than he had imagined.

The first day of school, each student would be shown to his/her dormatory introduced to his/her roommates. Although Greg knew that he would have a dorm-room, he had completely forgotten the fact that he would have a roommate. Maybe I will make a friend through this after all, Greg hoped silently as he took his things and followed the directions given to him.

Greg's room was on the second floor of the guy's dormatory, Room 238. When he opened the door he saw that his roommate had beaten him here: posters on one wall showed the band Hell's Angels in all their glory. On one of the beds lay an average sized boy with bright purple hair and a darker complexion. Blasting over the radio over the boy's bed was, not surprisingly, Hell's Angels.

When Greg put down his things and looked around, the boy on the bed suddenly shot up and turned off the radio. Suddenly Greg found himself shaking hands with the purple-headed kid.

"Hey," he said in a friendly manner, "I'm eleven and insane, but you can call me Piggie, because I told you to."

Bewildered, Greg shook back slowly, "Hey...Piggie...I'm Greg..."

Piggie laughed, "Ha! Fantastic! Nice to meet you Greg."

"So...uh," Greg started, trying to start a conversation, when suddenly Piggie had disappeared half-way under his bed. When he returned he handed Greg a rolled up poster.

"Say Greg, you like Blatoise Brothers? PIKACHU! At The Disco? Airconditioner Head?" Piggie asked. He continued to shoot off names of bands, while Greg tried to keep up, nodding and shrugging if he could keep up with what Piggie was saying. When he finally stopped, Greg sighed and sat down on his bed.

"So, what's this poster for?" Greg asked, unfolding it.

Piggie shrugged, "It was here before I set up the home base."

Greg took that to mean that someone had left it behind and looked at it. To his surprise it was an autographed chart showing every known Poke'Mon, signed by Professor Oak himself. In awe, Greg almost didn't hear Piggie asking him something.

"Do you like Hell's Angels?"

"What?" Greg asked, distracted by the poster.

"DO YOU LIKE HELL'S ANGELS?"

"Oh, oh yeah...sure..."

"Good, because I love them, and you'll probably end up hearing them all day long if you stick around," Piggie said.

Greg smiled, Great, he thought, At least he has commitment. Greg put the poster away and started putting his things up around the room. Piggie watched in disintrest and eventually just went back to laying down and listening to Hell's Angels.

With Piggie quiet, Greg had a few moments to think. Well, it's 9:00 AM right now and class starts at 11:00. That gives me two hours to get ready, I guess... Deciding to have his stuff put together, Greg slipped his class supplies into his bookbag and told Piggie he was going to go hang out in the courtyard until class started.

"Have fun, mate," Piggie said, waving Greg off. As Greg closed the door and went down to the courtyard, he remembered this mornings encounter with Jennifer Sullivan, the pretty blonde-haired girl. Almost as if by magic, Greg noticed that she and her friends were in fact standing in a part of the courtyard. Greg's mind was racing. What do I do? he wondered frantically, confused and worried. Should I talk to her? Or not...Maybe I should just-

Suddenly, one of the girls began to wave at Greg. The red-head one whose name Greg didn't know. It looked like she wanted him to come over to them. Uh oh, Greg thought, regreting this decision to come down to the courtyard. Even so, Greg sucked it up and decided to walk over there.

---

Jennifer felt shocked when Kassy waved the boy, Greg, over. Why is she doing this to him? Can't she tell he's shy? Jenn felt sorry for Greg; he obviously wasn't comfortable around her, but whether that was because he liked her, she couldn't tell. She had a suspicion, however, that Greg was not that kind of a guy.

"Hi..." he said meekly. He was obviously worried, maybe even frightened. Mariah however, quickly broke the ice.

"Greg, right? Hi, I'm Mariah, this is Kassy, Miranda, Isabell, and you already know Jennifer."

Greg looked almost instantly releaved and even smiled, saying a quick 'hi' to the group. Jenn felt her eyes lock with his for a moment. He really does have pretty eyes.

"So, where are you from Greg?" Kassy asked in a friendly way. Jenn instantly saw this for what it really was. She knew Kassy didn't mean to do it, but her family had taught her how.

Some parts of Terras were considered plain trash, and people from those places were many times considered plain trash too. It was a kind of test that many Aquarains used.

"Eh, Pyre Village. I'm from Pyre Village to the East of here," Greg answered.

Jenn was afraid of that. Pyre Village was fairly well known, but not for the reasons Greg might want. Almost everyone in Terras considered Pyre Village a dirty town or scoundrels and drunks, and although in some cases it might be true, Jennifer knew that her friends shouldn't do this to anouther student. Especially not to such a sensitive kid, she thought.

"Really? That's neat!" Mariah exclaimed, relaxing Jenn some. "None of us are from anywhere but here."

Greg seemed relaxed too now, able to converse about something. "Yeah, well, where I'm from is nothing special. This place, though, is just so...pretty." Some of the girls giggled at first, but soon realized he was serious as they looked at him blushing slightly.

"Um...It was nice meeting you all, but...uh...I have to go, I forgot some of my books for class..." Greg walked away slowly at first, and then broke into something of a frantic dash. Jenn sighed, exasperated. She punched Kassy in the arm softly and walked back towards the dorm. Jenn felt that she could wait until after school to talk to Kassy and the others about Greg. And it shouldn't be such a big deal... I mean, I don't like him...

She turned suddenly and looked back as Greg stopped at the dormatory doors. He looked at her too, smiled, and walked away. She felt herself becoming red in the face.

Right?

Looks like I get first post..

Hello.

Good job. This fic has something behind it. Kudos to you. The length was good, although you may want to lengthen it as you go on. I noticed a few mistakes, though most were minor spelling errors. You might want to double check your work more thoroughly. But it's all good right now. I'll probably be back for more. God job, and good luck. Nice portrayal of shy people. I really liked that.

Hmm, this is an interesting start for a writer. I liked the background information you gave on the region of Terras ^^ I always feel so enlightened after reading explanatory sections of stories for some reason XD Anyway, the plot seems to be moving just a little fast for my taste, but it's much better than other things I've read on here. The characters are pretty likeable, too, though I wish there was a way you could slip in a description there of Greg; I can't really imagine what he looks like.

Good luck with your fic ^^

Thank you, -Evander-. I know it wasn't very long, but it was really just an introductory for the two more important characters, Greg and Jenn, and the region of Terras. If I had continued, I felt like it would have missed the point of the chapter in the first place. And yeah, I'll go back and check more thoroughly. I forgot to put this one through spell check. :p

Thanks, CHeSHiRe-CaT. I know the plot seems to be quick, but I was kind of in a rush while writing it. It slows down a lot after the first chapter, I think. But even if it seems quick, the first chapter really only takes place in about an hour, so, yeah. I'm going to try to get a better description of Greg in next chapter, when the final main character is introduced, as well as a better one for Jenn. (Who knows, I may just draw them and scan pictures on, ect...)

Interesting part. I really would like to know how it continiues.

Thanks, Masumi. It starts out a bit slow, but after chapter four it will hopefully speed up. (Or at least by five. It depends on how much story is shoved into two and three, really...)

Thanks for the comments! Expect chapter update...eh...soonish.

Chapter 2: Enter Zach Takahi!
Chapter Rating: PG
Cursing: Yes
Gore/Violence: Violence
Stuff: None

Greg was sitting in his first class by the time the tardy bell rang, and he looked around. None of the girls were in the class with him, for which he was partly relieved, but there also wasn’t anyone else he recognized, not even Piggie. Oh well, Greg thought as he stared out the window lazily, it’s not like it’ll be a big deal. One year of this and I’m off on my own! I can go anywhere I want whenever I want and just…well…be alone.

As Greg was thinking this, the professor for the class, PokéMon Communications, stepped inside the classroom. He was a short man, Greg could easily be taller, and he had curling grey hair. He was old, maybe sixty, but he smiled a lot and seemed a very happy person.

“Hello class,” he said, putting his suitcase on his desk, “I am Professor Maple, and I shall be teaching you PokéMon communication this year.” As Prof. Maple sat in his desk and looked around he seemed confused.

“Is someone missing?” he asked. Greg looked around the classroom again to see what he meant. Sure enough, there was an empty desk. The professor sighed quietly and picked up a sheet of paper, “Well, I suppose we’ll find out soon enough. Roll call, everyone.”

Greg’s name was one of the first called, and for every name called someone answered “here” until Maple came to the end of the list. He called out the name: “Zach Takahi? Is Zach Takahi here?” There was no answer. Maple called the name again, and suddenly the door opened. A boy dressed in black walked in and sat at his desk.

Professor Maple did not appear amused, “I suppose you are Zach Takahi?” The boy nodded to confirm this. “Can you explain why you are late?” Professor Maple tried to press on. The boy said simply, “Because I left school to do something and I ran into some trouble on my way back.”

“Really?” Maple asked, continuing to interrogate Zach, “Are you able to specify what kind of trouble?” Zach nodded again.

“I was mugged,” he said, his voice still level.

Professor Maple seemed surprised. “Oh dear. Are you okay, my boy?”

Zach must have grinned because Greg saw how Maple’s face scrunched up like he was thinking very hard. Zach then answered Maple, “I’m fine, but the mugger isn’t getting out of the hospital for a few weeks.”

The boy perplexed Greg. He was cool-headed and collected, but he seemed to have an attitude, like he was angry with someone. That was not all that was different about Zach Takahi. He was tall, taller than Greg at least, and had snow-white hair. Greg hadn’t seen his face for very long before the boy had sat down, but Greg could tell he had blue or grey eyes, and that he had a face that reminded him of the guys in bands or on TV shows that girls always had crushes on for one reason or another. One thing is for sure, Greg thought to himself uneasily, I don’t think I’d like to get in this guys way.

Professor Maple obviously felt the same way, because he began to move on with class. “Alright children, tell me, what is Poke’Mon Communications class about?”

One girl in the back of the room raised her hand slowly, and when called upon said, “It’s a class where we learn to communicate with Poke’Mon?”

Professor Male clapped his hands excitedly, “Yes! Quite so, my dear girl. Mary, isn’t it? Yes, well, continuing. Mary is correct. In this class you shall learn how to communicate with PokéMon.”

The professor paused and looked around until he caught eyes with Greg. Uncomfortable, Greg suddenly went rigid in his seat. Please don’t call on me, Greg pleaded in his mind.
“You there, Gregory Breal, tell me. What do I mean my communicating with PokéMon?”

Damn. Greg felt that he knew the answer, but he was scared really. He didn’t want to make a fool of himself on the first day, but he stuttered anyway. “W-well, professor, I would think that it means that we’ll learn how to understand PokéMon.”

The professor was pleased by this answer, or so Greg thought from the expression on his face. Then again, Greg thought, he looked like that all through class until Zach Takahi came in.

Professor Maple started to speak again, “Well, Mr. Breal, I am happy to inform you that your thought is quite correct.” He walked around to stand in front of his desk.

“Now, can anyone tell me how we will learn to communicate with PokéMon? How about you, Mr. Takahi?” After the professor asked this, Zach didn’t answer immediately, nor did he raise his head to acknowledge the professor. “Mr. Takahi?”

Zach’s quick answer surprised everyone in the room; “We’ll learn how to recognize tones, patterns, and physical gestures and movements.”

Taken aback, Professor Maple merely nodded and said, “That is…correct. Now, let’s get out your notebooks and begin taking your first notes.”

---

Greg’s next class was slightly less interesting. Trainers Education was just an overstated way of saying P.E. Greg had to run laps and then take notes on how to pass the final exam at the end of the year. Greg didn’t know anyone in this class either (most of them were not in his first period, and those who were he wasn’t familiar with).

Letting into boredom, Greg’s mind wandered to Zach Takahi. He was…different to put it simply. He was smart, probably smarter than Greg, but tough. Zach Takahi was the kind of person Greg expected to see become a PokéMon League champion. He seemed to radiate strength, anger, and invincibility. Greg smiled slightly. He also seemed the kind of guy who all the girls would go crazy over, but that much he had gathered from watching the girls who sat in front of him talk in first period. Zach Takahi was obviously going to become well known this year.

---

Third period was designated the lunch period. Everyone would go into the cafeteria and get a lunch, and then they would go out to the courtyard and eat. Greg noticed that ‘everyone’ in this case did not include Zach Takahi. The tall and mysterious loner had disappeared once again. Greg decided not to let it bother him; it was none of his business what Zach did in his spare time.

Meanwhile, Greg was looking for a place to sit and eat. He had passed Piggie earlier but he had already finished lunch and was going to go and listen to music in the dorm until class started. Greg hadn’t seen Jennifer and her group since this morning and had felt that he would rather not again; he probably was already on everybody’s “loser” list as it was. Oh well, Greg thought as he continued to look for a spot, we’ll see who the losers are after I get out of here and on the road. Slightly confident now, Greg decided to just sit on one of the benches in the garden area. As he picked up his deformed looking ham and cheese sandwich, Greg suddenly noticed something moving through the bushes. He looked around him to see if anyone else noticed, but no one else was near him for now. Greg put down his sandwich and stuck his hand to part the leaves of the bush.

In Pyre Village, Greg had been taught to learn things for himself. If a little risk was involved, well, then it just made learning more interesting. Greg felt that this may have been one of those interesting lessons, but there was nothing in the bush. Weird, Greg thought, turning back to his lunch. Much to his surprise, there was something eating his sandwich. A PokéMon!

Greg quickly recognized the creature. About two feet tall, the tan armadillo-like Sandshrew was a usually very timid creature. Sandshrew were actually fairly common throughout the world, especially in Pyre Village, but Greg had never expected to see one in a place like Aquara City.

The Sandshrew had stopped nibbling on the sandwich and appeared to be ready to run. Greg moved slowly, hoping not to scare it away. He grabbed the sandwich and tore it in half, giving some to the Sandshrew. Suspicious, the Sandshrew sniffed at the sandwich and then at Greg’s hand before taking it and nibbling once more. Greg smiled, in awe. He had never really been so close to a PokéMon before. When Greg held out his hand to touch it the Sandshrew, with surprising quickness, rolled itself into a ball.

Bemused, Greg tapped his knuckle against its hard shell-like exterior. I guess it really is timid. Greg lifted up the ball. It wasn’t to heavy, maybe thirty pounds at the most. It was about the size of a soccer ball and even though Greg knew that he couldn’t hurt it, he carefully laid the Sandshrew on the ground and put the sandwich next to it. When the Sandshrew came out of hiding, it grabbed the sandwich and hopped back into the bushes. Greg smiled and left, amused by the encounter. Well, now I know what to tell my dad in my next letter home, he thought as he walked towards the school building.

---

Jennifer had already finished her lunch and was walking around the courtyard, part of her waiting for her friends to finish and catch and part of her wanting to go find Greg Breal, the boy she had met earlier in the day.

While walking around, she stopped near the entrance to the garden section of the courtyard. There was no one in the garden section except, to her surprise, Greg. He sat alone, or so she had thought. When he looked all he way at the bench she saw to her amazement that a Sandshrew was sitting next to Greg and nibbling on part of a sandwich. After what felt like a few minutes, Greg reached to touch the Sandshrew but the mouse-like PokéMon curled into its protective ball. Greg seemed to laugh and pick up the Sandshrew to examine it closer, but then put it down on the courtyard stone and put the sandwich next to it. The Sandshrew emerged from its shell and ran for the bushes. The look on Greg’s face was happier than she had ever seen in someone who seemed so scared. Jenn felt now that she was seeing the real Greg.

She decided not to stick around much longer and walked on. While she walked around the courtyard, the sight of a boy suddenly stopped her. The boy was the one from in the morning, the handsome white-haired boy in black. He was looking right at her. Wow. He has beautiful eyes, she thought, mesmerized by his stare. Embarrassed, she broke the contact. She sat down at a nearby bench and looked at him again. He was no longer watching her, but instead watching Greg Breal as he walked towards the building. Though she couldn’t be sure, it looked like the boy had indeed been watching Greg. She wondered why for a minute, and then pondered both of the boys.

Greg she had already met and talked too. He was new to the city and came from a fair distance away. He was a little bit taller than her, maybe 5’5’’, with dark brown hair and eyes to match. He was about average in size, not big but not small. The only other noticeable thing about him was his rather boyish face and the fact that he wore jeans and a dark red t-shirt. He was friendly, Jennifer thought, but preferred his own thoughts as company. Although he did seem to like that Sandshrew quite a lot, she thought with a smile. It was cute to watch him. She gave herself a mental slap on the hand, reminding herself of her earlier conclusion. Greg Breal is not the one. No way.

But this other boy who stood in the background was different from Greg. First of all, he was taller by about an inch. Secondly, he was just handsome, almost as if he could be some sort of celebrity. Third, he just gave off an atmosphere, even from so far away. He was strong and smart, and he wasn’t afraid to make that clear to people from his attitude. He seemed angry at the world, Jenn thought, kind of like that teenagers who hung out near her apartment and moped around, except he was genuinely angry.

She remembered now that she had seen this boy earlier in the morning, but he had disappeared before class. He had smooth, white hair and grey-blue eyes that were just beautiful, as she remembered her thoughts from earlier. He was clothed almost completely in black, except now she saw he wore a white t-shirt beneath his black short-sleeved jacket. He even wore black pants and shoes. A rather odd choice of clothing, Jennifer thought.

Jennifer’s thoughts of these two new boys were disturbed by the loud wailings of the class bell. Grabbing her things, Jenn looked back once more to see that the boy had disappeared. How odd

---

Greg’s next class was one he had been waiting for all day: PokéMon Interactions. Much to his surprise, Jennifer Sullivan was in this class. Feeling shy now, Greg sat near the back of the class.

The reason Greg was excited about this class was because he had heard that in this class they would get to actually meet with and learn about the actual PokéMon. The professor for this class, Professor Honey, was a young woman, especially compared to the other teachers.

“Hello class. I am Professor Honey, and welcome to PokéMon Interactions,” Prof. Honey introduced herself. She quickly checked roll, and much to Greg’s embarrassment, made Jennifer’s head turn to look for him as soon as she called his name. Quick to get to work, Professor Honey asked the class to reach under their desks and get the PokéMon guides. She then asked each person in the class to go through the book and choose their favorite PokéMon.

As Greg quickly learned, the guide was like a written PokéDex; it held information on every PokéMon known. Greg flipped through the book slowly, several different creatures catching his eye. One such was Sandshrew, but he continued past it. Eventually Greg found a PokéMon he thought was one of the most interesting, Dragonite. An extremely powerful and mysterious creature, Dragonite are known for their compassion and human-like intelligence.

After finding their favorites, Professor Honey would then ask each person to tell the class what it was. Multiple people said things like ‘Charizard,’ ‘Blastoise,’ ‘Venusaur,’ and other famous starting PokéMon, but no one else said Dragonite. Actually, Jennifer was one of the few to choose something else also; she selected Milotic as her favorite. After that was done, Prof. Honey asked everyone to listen carefully.

“Alright, now that you have chosen your favorite, tell me, if you were to meet one in the wild, how would you interact with it?”

The question had brought about an awkward silence.

“So none of you would know what to do?” Honey smiled pleasantly. “Good. That’s why I’m here to teach you.”

Prof. Honey proceeded to pull down the overhead screen and show some slides explaining the relationship between people and PokéMon. Greg decided to take some notes, but noticed that Jennifer seemed to be distracted. Looking in the same direction as her, Greg could see that Zach Takahi was standing outside. What is he doing? Greg wondered, stretching his neck. It looks like he’s talking to someone, Greg thought.

While he watched for a few more minutes, Zach left from the view of the window. Going back to his notes, Greg was surprised to hear the bell ring.

“Alright class, we’ll leave off here and pick up tomorrow. Have a nice first day.” And with that the class filed out of the room, Greg and Jennifer trailing behind.

---

As Greg walked, Jennifer stayed close behind him. Deciding to go ahead and ask him, Jenn ran up to him. “Hey Greg,” she said. Greg turned his head and nodded.

“I didn’t expect you to be in the same third period as me,” she commented, hoping to start a conversation. As if sensing her question, Greg stated the facts.

“You saw Zach Takahi too, outside of the window,” he said. He seemed confused every bit as much as Jenn.

“That’s his name than? Zach Takahi…” Jenn had seen him outside of the window talking to someone or something. It bothered her not to know.

“What class do you have next?” Greg was trying to change the subject, Jenn sensed, so she went with the chance to get to know him.

“Battle Class,” she answered. He seemed to lighten up now.

“Really? Me too,” he paused a moment then continued, “What exactly do we do in that class?” Jenn shrugged. She honestly didn’t know, and she had a feeling no one did either, especially since she had heard nothing about it from anyone.

“All I know is that it’s in the stadium and that it’s a really big class,” Jenn told Greg. Maybe Zach will be in it, she thought hopefully. Jennifer couldn’t help but be curious about this boy; he was unique in ways she had never encountered and it was…alluring.

Greg was silent the rest of the way there, and he seemed kind of sad. Jenn had noticed earlier that he didn’t seem to be a very happy person, more like the kind of guy who stays quiet a lot and doesn’t have many friends. Starting to feel sorry for him, Jennifer began to think of what to do. Should she try talking to him, or leave him alone? Looking at the clock tower, she decided to go with the third option.

“Come on, Greg! We have to hurry or we’ll be late!” Jennifer cried out, running ahead. She looked back to see an amused looking Greg who shook his head and ran after her.

“Race you there,” Greg said as he passed her up. Jennifer was caught by surprise by this and laughed, running even harder to keep up.

---

As Greg and Jenn came into the stadium, panting from the hard run and laughing quietly, they noticed that it had been a bit of an understatement to say that this was a big class. It was a class with every student in school involved.

“Whoa…you weren’t joking when you said that this is a big class,” Greg murmured. Jenn shook her head in agreement, slightly bewildered by the size of the class.

Greg tapped Jenn on the shoulder and the two found a seat near the front. In the middle of the arena was a podium that could be lowered and raised. Right now, it was at its highest allowing the Battle Class teacher to be seen and heard by all.

“Hello,” the professor bellowed, frightening some students, “I am Professor Warren. I will be teaching you how to compete in a PokéMon battle as well as how to capture PokéMon.” With this Prof. Warren began to lower the podium.

“Pop quiz! Two students will be selected for a battle to demonstrate how it works. I’ve put everyone’s name into the computer and it will use logic factors to choose two students who could possibly be the best battlers here. The names of those students will be shown on the scoreboard and they will come down and select six PokéMon for their battle. Understood?”

Because everyone was excited, or perhaps deaf, they all just shook their heads. Greg, knowing he couldn’t possibly be one of the ones chosen, watched in earnest. A PokéMon Battle! Sweet! This is going to be awesome!

Looking beside him, Jennifer also seemed excited, or at least that’s what he understood her smile to mean. She really is very pretty, he thought, looking at her face. Suddenly, cheers broke out in the stadium. Startled, Greg twisted his neck to fast and hurt himself.
Rubbing his neck slowly, he looked at the scoreboard in disbelief. Holy crap. Listed in big block letters were two names: Zachary Takahi and Gregory Breal.

Um...You kind of spelt both of those "PokéMon"s the same. Thanks anyway, Demy. (Do you mean using 'é' in PokéMon? I forgot to the last few chapters. I'll go back and fix it.)

Updating later. (Sometimes later today, in the evening or late afternoon...)

Chapter 3: Unexpected Battle; Greg vs. Zach! (Part 1)
Chapter Rating: PG
Cursing: yes
Gore/Violence: Yes
Stuff: None

Seeing his name on the scoreboard had scared Greg. Now everyone would see him. I can't lose this. If I do...well... Greg pushed the thought from his mind. He knew the consequences of losing in front of everyone... But what scared him even more was that he would be battling Zach Takahi.

As he walked down the stairs to the stadium field, Greg tried not to make eye contact with any of the people along the sides. Suddenly, Piggie's big purple Mohawk came out of nowhere.

"Go kick some ***, Breal! Show Takahi who's boss!"

Slightly embarrassed, Greg tried to smile but found he couldn't. He knew fairly well he was doomed. But I'll have to thank him later, Greg thought as he continued, at least someone's willing to cheer for me.

After that thought, Greg noticed that he had already reached the field and that the Battle professor was waiting for him, and standing next to him was a slightly dangerous looking Zach Takahi. As soon as Greg got over to the coach he was handed a belt with six PokéBalls hooked on it.

The coach smiled, "Alright, here are the rules. Six rounds, and each round will be over after a PokéMon faints. I want to see a good, clean battle. The computer chose you for a reason, so don't let us down," he said.

Zach suddenly stepped forward and put his hand out for Greg to shake. Greg accepted it and found that Zach was looking intently at his eyes. Greg returned the favor and said to him, "Good luck." Zach almost seemed to grin and then walked to the other side of the stadium.

Greg, not totally sure of what to do, imitated Zach in fashion and stood across the field from him. Looking around, Greg could see Piggie and his friends chanting something. He continued to look and could finally see that Jennifer had actually moved over to her friends and they were all talking. I wonder what about?

This thought was quickly interrupted by the coach over the intercom, "Will both students please step onto the metal stages in front of them."

It was the first time Greg had noticed them. I'm a nervous wreck, he realized. Stepping onto the stage, he was startled by a sudden creaking of gears. A gate surrounded the metal stage and began to rise nearly ten feet over the field. Feeling slightly nauseated, Greg didn't dare look anywhere but forward, and in doing so quickly regained his composure.

As he raised an arm to wipe sweat from his forehead, he noticed that there was a panel on the gate. On the panel were six grooves that were perfect for holding PokéBalls. Looking over quickly at Zach, who merely glared from across the field at Greg, he guessed that this was a unit for holding his PokéBalls. Slipping each ball into a groove, a little light with a picture glowed on his panel. Each picture was different. It took a moment for Greg to realize that these were the PokéMon in the balls. Looking at each light, he began to identify each PokéMon. Let’s see, Greg thought, trying to think quickly, this one is a Golem… I think this is a Misdreavus, and this one is a Heracross. The others he had no time to identify, because suddenly, the coach called for the battle to begin.

“Alright everyone, let’s have a battle!” This announcement brought dozens of cries from the stadium, all of them asking for the same thing: a fight. Greg glared down the field at Zach and vice versa. Greg smiled suddenly. I think I just made my first rival.

---

Jennifer watched in awe as it happened. She had been completely caught off guard, as had Greg been, when his name had appeared on the scoreboard. Seeing Takahi’s name up there, however, hadn’t been all too surprising.

After Greg had left, Jenn had found her friends sitting in one of the better viewing seats and decided to join them. Once there she watched Greg worriedly.

“Do you think he has a chance of winning?” Mariah asked. Kassy laughed at this.

“I bet you anything that he does it! The computer had to have chosen him for a reason. It wouldn’t be logical to put the worst and the best together, would it?” Kassy’s rationalization did little to make Jennifer feel any more confident. Even if Greg were selected for some reason, if he lost he would become the butt of every joke for a very long time.

“I hope he wins, because if he doesn’t…”

Mariah stopped her and pointed at the field to where suddenly, Zach and Greg seemed to be shaking hands. “They look very intense down there,” she muttered. Jennifer nodded in agreement. When looking around at the stands, she saw something very unusual. A boy with a purple Mohawk was shouting and screaming what seemed to be “Greg’s our man! Greg’s our man!” Well, Jenn thought hopelessly, at least someone thinks he can do it.
---

Zach stared at his opponent with his arms folded in front of his chest. He glanced down as his assigned team of PokéMon and quickly thought of a strategy. Even if this Greg turned out to be any good, he would have a hard time defeating Zach.

Having watched this kid all day, Zach had a feeling he could see why the computer had selected him. He may not be the most social person, or the bravest, or the smartest, but he was different from other kids at this school. Zach grinned slightly. If what he thought about Gregory Breal were true, then it would be a very fun battle.

---

Greg watched as Zach took the first move, saying loudly enough for people to hear him, “Go, Crobat!” Appearing a flash of red light, a large purple, bat-like creature emerged. With a face only a mother could love, the Crobat was an odd creature. It lacked actual legs, bearing instead two extra wings.

Suddenly, a screen lighted up on the panel. It showed information on Crobat. Greg read it over quickly. Crobat, level 50. Effective against Fighting-types, Grass-types, and Bug-types. Ineffective against Steel-types, Rock-types, Poison-types, Ground-types, Electric-types, Ghost-types. Weak to Rock-types, Psychic-types, Ice-types, and Electric-types.

Greg pondered for a moment. Rock-type’s, eh? Then maybe Golem would be a good choice… Pushing on Golem’s light, a similar thing happened as when Crobat was released; a flash of red light emanated from the panel and suddenly, a large, spherical boulder PokéMon appeared. Golem slowly uncurled itself, revealing a dragon-like snout and face as well as two short, but muscular arms and legs. It roared out as Crobat zoomed past it in what looked like a Quick Attack.

Greg and Zach both turned to the coach, who, smiling wide, yelled, “Battle!”

---

Jennifer watched as the scoreboard blinked again, now showing each PokéMon’s portrait and how much health they had left. Above the PokéMon’s picture was the trainer’s name. Once the coach yelled for the battle to begin, Zach began the attack, ordering a Quick Attack from Crobat. In retaliation, Greg ordered his Golem to use a Defense Curl attack to deflect it.

Everyone in the stadium seemed surprised, including Greg. Jennifer smiled, confidence in Greg rising within her. Maybe he does have a chance!

---

Greg sighed with relief. On his panel it showed that Golem was also at level 50 and his attacks. It was because of the panel that he had known that Golem could use the Defense Curl attack. Now he would try to bring things to his side of the field. Quickly glancing at his panel, he ordered the next move.

“Golem, use Rock Slide!” he yelled over the crowd. Golem, obeying the order, slammed his heavy body against the ground. The force of Golem’s weight brought up an enormous stone, about the size of a small yacht. Using it arms, it lifted the stone. Greg grinned with satisfaction. If Golem had good enough aim, which he hoped it did, then Crobat would be finished.

Zach had obviously come to the same conclusion and did something Greg didn’t expect. “Crobat, use Double Team!”

Greg’s grin disappeared as quickly as it had come. This could be a problem. The Crobat’s Double Team had just made the illusion of six different Crobat on the field, and from the way Golem had reacted, it had no idea where the original was. Checking Golem’s status on the panel, Greg could see nothing that could help him. Clenching his fingers, Greg made an educated guess. If Golem threw the stone at the correct angle, then it could hit multiple Crobat copies, or even the original depending on how lucky they got.

“Golem! Throw the rock at an angle so you can hit more than one Crobat!”

Golem grunted and carried out the order to Greg’s specifications. Throwing the rock on its side meant that it would cover a wider area, and even if it made it less powerful as a projectile, it could be enough to disperse the copies. And it did its job well. Three of the copies were instantly destroyed, leaving the original and two others.

Zach suddenly made his move, “Crobat, use Shadow Ball!” Greg looked all around the stadium to see where the attack would be coming from, but was to late. The glowing orb of energy struck Golem like a missile, sending the Rock PokéMon hurtling towards the opposite side of the stadium.

“Damn,” Greg muttered, biting his lip in thought. Golem’s just too slow to keep up with Crobat. I need to find a way to get Golem to trap Crobat… Greg glanced back at the panel when something caught his attention. Looking down to make sure Golem had gotten up, he gave his next order.

“Golem, use Rock Tomb!” Golem rose and then pounded his heavy frame against the earth, using its girth to reveal large boulders. Zach seemed almost surprised, but still seemed confident, but before he could say anything, Greg yelled something else out:
“Aim for the Crobat to the far right, Golem!”

Taken aback, Zach merely watched as heavy boulders pelted Crobat and was then pinned beneath them. On the scoreboard and on Greg’s panel it showed that Crobat was almost out of health, meaning that if Greg did this next move correctly, he could win the first round.

Zach obviously didn’t agree with that conclusion. His next order completely caught Greg off guard. “Crobat, return!” At the order, a beam of read light transferred Crobat back to its PokéBall.

Greg clinched his fists. He had been so close to winning the first round, but it was a smart move. The coach had only said that if the Poke’Mon was knocked out would the round be over, and now Golem was at nearly half-health. Just wait, Breal. See what his next PokéMon is and then switch if necessary. Suddenly, Greg felt slightly thankful for his Trainer’s Education class, even if it had seemed a waste of time.

---

Watching carefully, Jennifer felt disappointed. Greg had been so close to winning the first round, but Zach obviously wasn’t going to lose like that. The other girls were in heated conversation. The battle had only been going on for five minutes, and already everyone was very into it. The purple-Mohawk had become silent for now, mesmerized by the heat of battle.

Jenn took this time to analyze things. Greg still looked very nervous, not that it surprised her, but Zach hadn’t broken a sweat yet. He looked ready for anything. And he probably is, Jennifer noted as Zach looked at his panel to select his next PokéMon.

Come on Greg, she found herself pleading, prove yourself!

---

Greg watched carefully as Zach selected his PokéMon, but then looked down at Golem, who had moved itself into a ready position right in front of Greg’s command stand.

“How are you doing, Golem?” Greg asked it. Surprisingly, the Golem gave a very human thumbs-up and what almost looked like a smile. This lifted Greg’s confidence a little. If his PokéMon were up to the fight, he would be the same.

Out from Zach’s side of the field appeared a sudden flash of light followed by Zach yelling, “Go, Roselia!” Out of the light appeared a tiny, flower-like PokéMon. It was extraordinarily small compared to the massive Golem. It was mostly a pale green, and on each arm had a richly colored rose as well as what looked like a crown of thorns on its head.

Greg looked at his panel as soon as he saw it light up again. Once again at level 50, the Roselia was stated to be effective against Rock, Ground, Grass, and Water-types. It was ineffective, however, against Steel, Ghost, Flying, Poison, Bug, Dragon, and Fire-types. It’s main weaknesses, Greg saw, we’re Fire, Psychic, Flying, and Bug-types.

Noting the Bug-type weakness, Greg looked back down at his panel to see that he had a Heracross on his team. Before making his decision, Greg looked at Roselia’s basic statistics. Golem won’t stand a chance against a Grass-type with Special Attack that high… Heracross definitely stands a better chance, Greg reasoned, pushing Golem’s ‘return’ button.

“Return, Golem!” Greg ordered. He quickly followed this move by selecting the Heracross icon. “Go, Heracross!” he yelled.

Taking the place of the Rock PokéMon was now a smaller beetle-like PokéMon. Its dark blue carapace hid its true power, but it did appear quite menacing with its large spiked horn. Opening its wings for a stretch, Heracross made a high-pitched hissing noise when it saw Roselia.

“Alright Heracross,” Greg commanded, “use your Megahorn attack on Roselia!”

Greg hoped that the powerful Bug-type attack would make quick work of Roselia, but Zach next order made certain that it would be a long and hard battle. “Roselia, use Stun Spore to paralyze Heracross!”

As Heracross neared its target, Roselia leaped into the air, flinging Stun Spore all around it. Heracross was to late to stop itself and now found it extremely hard to maneuver itself. Greg however felt he could turn this into a good thing. Heracross’ ability, Guts, made Heracross 50% more powerful when it was afflicted with a status condition, which could mean that Heracross might be able to knock out Roselia in one hit.

“I hope this works,” Greg said but meant to think, “Heracross, use Facade!”

Greg nearly smiled as he saw Zach’s expression; he hadn’t taken the time to account for the fact that a status condition could be used in one’s favor. Heracross, now using almost 80% more power in its attacks than usual. Roselia doesn’t stand a chance! Greg thought excitedly.

Heracross quickly caught Roselia and was about to smash it with a Facade attack when Zach gave his next order. “Roselia, use Hidden Power!”

With sudden quickness, Roselia unleashed a wave of energy, sending Heracross flying backwards into the stadium wall. Heracross tried to get to its feet, but Greg could see that Heracross was done for. The force of the attack had crushed its exoskeleton around the chest. Roselia’s Hidden Power had been super effective, meaning that it had been a very powerful Psychic or Flying-type version of it.

Greg watched as Heracross finally hit the ground and the remainder of his health drained down to ‘zero.’

The coach stepped into the stadium: “The first round is over! Win goes to Zachary Takahi!

---

All of the confidence that Jennifer had built up for Greg had suddenly been depleted. He was going to lose and be humiliated. She just knew it. Zach was just a better fighter, a smarter fighter.

Kassy grabbed Jenn’s shoulder in a comforting way and said to her, “Don’t worry Jenn! He’ll be fine. There’s five more rounds after all.” Mariah said she agreed, but she didn’t sound so sure. Jennifer noticed that even the Mohawk seem to feel the same way. Her shoulder’s slumped and she looked at Zach Takahi who seemed to be smirking.

Greg’s doomed.

---

Zach Takahi had to admit; Gregory Breal was tougher than he had thought. Smarter too. He was a rookie, but he was still pretty quick on his feet. And here I thought I would win this easily.

Zach almost chuckled to himself for being so overconfident. He wouldn’t let it happen again. He couldn’t let it happen again, Zach reminded himself with a scowl.

Losing for Zach Takahi meant the end of many promises and dreams which he had no intention of breaking.

---

The coach announced the continuation of the battle. Greg Breal now had two choices: send Golem back out to fight against whatever else Zach had up his sleeve, or choose a new PokéMon. Greg decided that the latter might be a better decision.

Looking at his panel, Greg decided to push the icon labeled “Team Info.” Suddenly a holographic computer screen came up in front of him and the other screen went blank. On the holographic-screen were six PokéMon icons. The first was Golem, which showed a half-full health bar underneath it. The second was Misdreavus, which Greg had yet to use, and the fainted Heracross, which had a red ‘x’ over its icon, followed it. The last three PokéMon were the ones Greg had not been able to identify at first. They included, to Greg’s surprise, Magmar, a lizard-like Fire-type PokéMon, Walrein, a walrus-like PokéMon and an Ice/Water-type, and finally a Metagross, a Steel/Psychic-type PokéMon that looked something cross between a clawless crab and a machine.

Satisfied, Greg closed the information screen and pushed the icon for Walrein to enter the battle. “Go, Walrein!” With a sudden flash, the ice blue large-tusked walrus appeared. As it moved, Greg could see that what he had thought was just blubber was actually sinewy muscle. It looked immensely powerful and majestic, if not somewhat awkward on land.

Almost predictably, Zach decided to switch PokéMon again. “Go, Hitmontop!”

On Zach’s side of the field appeared a stout human-like PokéMon. It was only a few inches shorter than Greg, counting the out-of-place horn on top of its head. The creature appeared to be wearing a blue jumpsuit as well as sweatbands and had a very oddly shaped head. The Fighting-type PokéMon even had a spiked tail and spikes on its feet. It made a kind of menacing pose that made Walrein back up. It took a moment for Greg to realize that Hitmontop had an Intimidate ability.

Looking as Hitmontop’s statistics, Greg realized that this too would be a tough match-up. Walrein was going to have a hard time getting past Hitmontop’s high Special Defense rating as well as escaping Hitmontop’s fast Fighting-type attacks, all of which Walrein was weak against. Greg really had only one choice: make the battlefield favorable for Walrein, and he had an idea of how to do that.

“Walrein, use Rain Dance!” Greg commanded. Walrein roared to the skies and suddenly a downpour began. Greg laughed to himself as he heard the screams of other students, but wet clothing would be the least of Greg’s worries; if he lost… Well… If I lose, then I’m practically screwed for the rest of the year anyway.

---

Jennifer pulled out her sweater from in her book bag to cover herself. Luckily for Mariah and Kassy, one girl had brought a big enough umbrella for everyone to hide under.

“Don’t worry,” someone yelled over the rain, “The rain will stop in about five or six attacks.” Jenn, although glad that the rain would stop, couldn’t say this made her feel better. Greg still might have a chance, she thought, but then looked at Zach. Albeit, a very slim one.

---

On the battlefield, Greg could see that Walrein’s Rain Dance had done its job; there was now a steady two feet of water on the field, meaning that there was just enough for Greg’s strategy to work. Better yet was the fact that Hitmontop seemed to be bothered by the wetness; it could move as quickly if there was water everywhere. Greg decided to go ahead and make his move:

“Walrein, use Swagger!”

The immense walrus obeyed, throwing its head and snorting. Hitmontop suddenly became very agitated, but appeared dizzy. Yes! It’s confused, Greg thought with satisfaction. This would only make it easier for the next move. When Greg looked at his opponent, Zach seemed unfazed. In fact, he still seemed fairly confident.

Greg, wanting to win this round quickly, ordered the next move: “Walrein, use Surf!”

Walrein, in reaction to this new order, did something that Greg found mystifying. Its eyes turning completely blue, Walrein caused the water to start forming waves, until after a few moments, and a gigantic tsunami of a wave rushes forward at a crushing speed. Hitmontop disappeared within the wave until it hit Zach’s command stand. The water then calmed, revealing a bashed and beaten Hitmontop on its back. Slowly, the PokéMon got to its feet. Cheers got louder in the stadium as Zach got ready to launch his next move.

“Hitmontop, use Mind Reader!” Zach commanded. Greg watched in earnest as Hitmontop closed its eyes for a few moments. Seeing an opportunity, Greg commanded Walrein to attack again.

“Use Ice Beam, Walrein!”

The walrus PokéMon reared on its back fins as it charged a ball of frozen energy in its mouth. Then the energy was released in a beam that was heading towards Hitmontop very quickly.

Zach was, however, prepared for this, “Now Hitmontop! Use Detect!”

Greg watched with amazement as Hitmontop’s eyes shot open and it used its bare hands to block the attack. Damn. Zach did not stop there though: “Use Brick Break, Hitmontop!”

Without a way to quickly defend itself, Walrein merely lowered its head as Hitmontop launched itself, spinning through the air like a bullet. When the impact came, to Greg’s dismay, the 300-pound Walrein was sent flying into the air.

Zach did not end the assault and continued to have Hitmontop use Triple Kick, which it used from above Walrein, sending it down with crushing force. Walrein tried to stand back up, but Hitmontop put its weight on top of the PokéMon with its foot. Greg could see that Walrein had many broken and open flesh wounds, out of which blubber, fat, and blood slowly leaked, missing yellow tissue and bright red blood. He almost felt sick to see Walrein pass out from shock and cough out blood.

“Zach Takahi wins the second round!” the coach announced, almost in disbelief.

Greg’s fell to his knees. This was becoming impossible. I can’t win, Greg realized, He’s too good. He silently stood back up and pushed the return button.

He continued to look down at the panel, his weight resting upon it as he leaned forward. Think, damn it. There has to be a way to beat him. No one is invincible. Not even Zach Takahi. Greg glared at his opponent, who, as through the entire battle, remained completely calm. How does he do it? Am I really that bad at this? Or…Has he done this before? Greg’s mind was filled with questions and uncertainties. It didn’t make sense how or why Zach was winning. If anything, it would have made more sense just to finish him off quickly rather than through this painfully slow style. What more, Zach even seemed to allow his PokéMon to get hit. Suddenly Greg knew what he had to do. I have to let him go first, watch him as he fights, find something I can use against him, and then take advantage of it. Thankfully, Greg had a pretty good idea of how to do that.

---

Jennifer watched despairingly. There was no way for Greg to pull this off. Even when he was doing his best through almost twenty minutes of fighting, he would lose in the last thirty seconds. Zach was just too skilled; Greg was out of his league entirely.

She had noticed now that whatever hopeful praise for Greg there had been was gone. No one was cheering for him now. It seemed clear who the winner would be. If only there were some way he could win this…

---

Zach had been watching Greg for a while during the battle and had figured out fairly quickly what he was planning to do during each round. His methods were clearly rookie in fashion, but even for someone with no experience, Zach had already had a few close calls. Thankfully, he doesn’t understand that he must act faster on his commands. He thinks too much before acting.

For a brief moment, Zach’s attention was captured again, but not by Breal. The loser had gone back to his thoughts and was not yet ready to battle it seemed. Zach’s attention had been taken by the girl he had seen enter with Gregory. He had seen her before, in the courtyard, where for a moment the two had captured the sight of the other. She was pretty, beautiful even. Pale blonde hair, deep green eyes, and a slender and appealing body… Zach pondered what relationship existed between Gregory and this girl. He knew that it couldn’t possibly be intimate; if it had been she would have gone to him sooner than before this class. There was probably nothing yet, Zach thought. The two didn’t seem to know each other very well, because if they did they would probably have been socializing with each other earlier in the day.

From what Takahi could tell, Gregory Breal was from off island, not unlike himself. But not from a foreign land like Zach. Probably from one of the neighboring island cities. He had few friends from what he could tell, but Breal’s being a loner seemed to be for reasons not unlike his own. He had been hurt in the past, perhaps, or even rejected. Zach admitted he could sympathize with him, but he would not do so now. He had a battle to win, after all.

---

“Alright boys, let’s get this battle on the road! We have forty-five minutes left of class!” The coach had suddenly brought Greg back from inside his mind. He felt ready now; he knew what to do and when to do it. Now all he must do was wait for Zach to make his first move. He didn’t have to wait long.

“Go, Stantler!” Zach called out, releasing an elk-like PokéMon. Greg felt ready now and put his strategy into action.

“Misdreavus, go!” Greg’s PokéMon appeared suddenly, but then faded away only to return once more. Greg didn’t let it distract him; he knew that Misdreavus was a pure Ghost-type Poke’Mon that could travel this realm as if it didn’t truly exist. To describe it best, Misdreavus appeared to be a floating disembodied head with flowing hair and big illumines eyes.

Greg then looked to study Stantler, Zach’s PokéMon. It resembled a stag or elk with a large, half-sphere tail and eye-like antlers. While looking at it’s opponent, Misdreavus became Intimidated and its attack stat was lowered. Greg recognized this as unimportant; Misdreavus had low Attack statistics anyway, and would be better off using Special Attacks. Another thing he took note of was that the rain had completely stopped now and that the sun was out again.

Zach took the chance to have the first move: “Stantler, use Shadow Ball!”

Greg grimaced as he gave his quiet command, “Misdreavus, disappear!

Stantler, while charging its Shadow Ball became confused. Misdreavus had just suddenly turned invisible. You can’t attack what you can’t see, Greg thought with a smirk.

Zach continued to command calmly, “Use your Calm Mind, Stantler!”

Greg didn’t see the purpose of this: the only strategic use of Calm Mind was to raise Special Attack and Defense stats. He refrained from giving Misdreavus an order and decided instead to see how this would play out.

“Now, use Extrasensory to locate Misdreavus!” Zach commanded. Suddenly, Greg could see that the Extrasensory had indeed hit Misdreavus. Thankfully, Greg thought to himself, it didn’t do too much damage.

“Misdreavus, use Pain Split!” Greg ordered. Greg watched as ghostly energy split the combined health points of both Misdreavus and Stantler and split them in half between them. Now, Misdreavus had more health than Stantler.

“Alright,” Greg called out, “Now use Mean Look!”

Takahi was about to give an order but seemed to realize the meaning of this and waited.

I have him exactly where I want him. Greg went on to give the next order: “Now, Destiny Bond, Misdreavus!”

Zach once again had a moment of stunned silence. He probably hadn’t expected Greg to take the risk of a draw. Greg, however, now saw things differently. The only way Greg had a chance to win at all was if he forced Zach to a confined strategy. And if Greg didn’t win this way… Well, at least I could make it a draw.

Suddenly cheers broke out from the stadium that were louder than every before. Many of them realized what Greg had done and could see the genius of it. Greg grinned and waited for Zach to make his next move; he had a suspicion that the strategy Takahi was using had just changed again.

---

Among those cheering the loudest of the crowd was the well-known and usually quiet Jennifer Sullivan. Brilliant! He trapped Zach in a way that it will only end in a draw or a win! He could turn this around!

Kassy and Mariah were ecstatic now: “Oh my God! Oh my God! He’s going to do it! He’s going to win a round!”

Jennifer watched on, totally absorbed by the battle. The only time she had seen strategies like that used were in professional Poke’Mon battles. That’s why he was chosen! He fights like he’s done it all before!

Amazed and happy for Greg, Jenn soon sat down to watch what would happen next.

---

Zach glared down the field at Gregory Breal, then at his own panel. He had little choice now except to crush Breal as quickly as possible. He couldn’t risk losing to this… rookie. Even if he fights like hell, Zach reminded himself. It might not be easy to do now, but Zach’s life hadn’t exactly been easy either, and that had been going on a lot longer than some PokéMon battle.

Zach decided to give his next order: “Stantler, use Confuse Ray!”

The opponent quickly countered this with a Psychic attack, which overtook the Confuse Ray and hit Stantler head on, leaving with only a little health. Unable to defend himself any longer, Zach tried a desperate last move: “Use Rest, Stantler!”

---

“Damn!” Greg said to himself, pounding his fist on the panel. Now Zach was only stalling, waiting for Greg to become impatient. “Screw you, Takahi… I know your little game now,” he growled under his breath.

“Misdreavus, use Dream Eater!” Greg ordered. He watched with amusement as Misdreavus squealed with delight as it went off to cause Stantler one hell of a nightmare. He needed to adjust his strategy now, and Greg knew that. Zach would have something better than Rest to use against Misdreavus during the next few attacks.

Seeing that Stantler was down to three / fourths of his health, Greg decided that the easiest way to wear Stantler down to the fainting point would be a Psychic attack, but to his surprise, Stantler awoke almost immediately.

“You know, Breal, it helps to use berries during a battle,” he heard Zach yell across the field. That pompous ***, Greg thought to himself, now really angry.

“Misdreavus, show these guys what a real battle is like: use Psychic!” Greg ordered in his rage. He wanted to win this round, and then end this battle.

“Now! Stantler, use Protect!”

Damn it! You bit the bait, you idiot! Greg reprimanded himself. He needed to act now before Takahi would cut this round out and make it a draw.

“Misdreavus, use Thunderbolt!” Greg commanded, watching his panel carefully to make sure Misdreavus would be able to keep this up a bit longer. Luckily, Stantler’s Protect did not block both the Psychic attack and the Thunderbolt, and now Stantler reach a little below the halfway point of health.

Zach hadn’t expected his Protect to fail so quickly, but Greg knew better than to wait for Zach to recover as he would soon. “Misdreavus, use Toxic on Stantler, now!”

Stantler was not fast enough to escape Misdreavus’ Toxic gas, and so now Stantler was poisoned and injured to the point where Greg felt that he could take a win if he acted quickly.

Zach was about to call out, but Greg was faster: “Misdreavus, use Psychic and finish it off!”

---

Jennifer could barely watch as the last attack was sent out. She half expected to hear the coach announce a third win for Takahi, but what she actually heard was much more startling. It was a roar of applause and screaming, with everyone chanting, “Greg’s our man! Greg’s our man!”

Jenn moved her hands from in front of her face to see Greg holding up his arms in a victory pose. Down on the field, Stantler had collapsed and was knocked out. Misdreavus floated over Greg’s head, and the scoreboard lit up, announcing that Gregory Breal had indeed won a round against the seemingly unbeatable Zach Takahi.

“GO GREG!” she yelled, relieved by the victory. Even if she had been wrong, she was happy. She was happy that she was wrong about this. She was happy that Greg won the round. But now, she realized, Zach would fight harder than ever. She knew this because she could see him now, and he did not look happy.

---

Zach Takahi looked down at his feet for a moment, and then at the audience, and then at Gregory Breal, who was smiling stupidly at his victory. A well-earned victory, Zach reminded himself. Then he grinned menacingly. He may as well enjoy it, Zach told himself as he prepared his next strategy, for it will be the last one he has against me.

It's Lil' Kim, ho!
Huh, that was interesting. I liked it alot. For some reason, I got the feelings of an old Yu-Gi-Oh! duel with Walrin caused the stage to flood and then use Surf. But that is good, I think.

Anyway, this IS really good. Keep it goin' strong...

Thanks, FusionSonicX. I wouldn't know about Yu-Gi-Oh! at all, so it's merely a coincidence. (I never got into it, I'm afraid. I guess I was a little bit too old to get a good start into it.)

Thanks all the same! (Next chapter will hopefully be later today...but I can make no promises...)

EDIT- I decided to just start on it now, just because I have nothing better to do... (9:43 AM Central...)

Thanks, Lostsoulz0. I am trying to fit in as much actual strategy with PokéMon as I can, but I am afraid that such tactics won't appear in the next chapter (which I am trying to finish as quickly as possible). The next chapter is a bit more...well... more of a thrashing than anything tactical.

Thanks.

Chapter 4: Unexpected Battle; Greg vs. Zach! (Part 2)

Alright, next chapter. Hopefully, after this, I can find a way of getting past the rest of the school year so we can see Greg go on an adventure... And yes, I know it's not that long...

Chapter 4: Unexpected Battle; Greg vs. Zach! (Part 2)
Chapter Rating: PG
Cursing: Yes
Gore/Violence: Yes (More than in Chapter 3)
Stuff: No

Greg took a deep breath. At the very end of that battle, he had gotten very close to only making through the round with a draw. Ha! I won a round, Greg thought proudly. He didn't care how close it had come, because in the next round that wouldn't matter.

Looking down at his panel, Greg made sure to take note of what he could and might want to try as his next strategy. He was tempted to keep Misdreavus in the battle, but she appeared to be very tired from her fight with Stantler.

"Thank you," Greg said to her as he pushed the return button. Greg looked up at the scoreboard again. In big block letters, it read, "Zachary Takahi: 2 | Gregory Breal: 1."

I have to catch up fast if I want to make this a win or a draw, Greg thought ominously. He still had his objective in mind from before; he knew that if he beat Zach Takahi even once more, it would be extremely difficult. That knowledge partly came from the way Takahi was glaring at Greg as the crowd cheered.

Slightly nervous, Greg checked his Poke'Mon again. It was after this that he realized that he wouldn't have a fully healed Poke'Mon the last round if just used fully healed PokéMon. Unless I throw the round. The idea of giving a chance to Zach to basically destroy Greg didn't sound too appealing, but it didn't look like he had much choice.

Greg decided to let what would happen unfold itself. He would try his hardest to win, but if he couldn't... Then you'll probably be miserable for the rest of the year. This motivated Greg enough to make him feel ready.

He wanted nothing more than to win this and prove himself to everyone, even though no one expected anything from him. At least not here. But now there was hope. Zach Takahi was not invincible and could be beaten. And Greg had a good idea of how to do that.

---

Jennifer watched as Greg Breal and Zach Takahi went on with their constant staring. It irritated her to feel so helpless for such a long time. She definitely didn't want to see Greg lose, but she couldn't help but feel that he was doomed to lose, and after that... Well... Jenn knew good and well how people were.

Trying to listen to Kassy and Mariah, Jenn found herself distracted instead by Zach Takahi. There was something about him that grabbed her attention. Not his looks or his battling skills. There was something else to Zach Takahi that no one knew about. Something dark, Jennifer found herself thinking.

Although she was confused, Jenn decided just to forget about it all and concentrate on the battle. She would have time to think about it later on, without Zach Takahi staring at her and without Greg Breal to worry about.

Why do they have to be so damn confusing?

---

"Alright boys, good round. Bloody hell, wonderful battle even. Let's try to get this done before next period though; let's go! Thirty minutes!" the coach announced. Greg was ready this time and decided to make the first move.

"Go, Magmar!" he cried out over the roar of the crowds. As soon as the flaming lizard-like creature appeared, Greg noticed that the temperature around him, and perhaps even around the stadium, seemed to rise a few degrees. The Magmar itself was a very interesting PokéMon; it stood about as tall as the Hitmontop Greg had battled earlier, but it looked very different. The beast had the appearance of a walking flame in the form of a demonic lizard. The best part, Greg thought, is that Magmar has such a large diversity of attacks (and the stats to use them) that it can take on just about any opponent.

Zach made his choice then: "Go, Dragonair!"

From Zach's side of the stadium came one of the most beautiful PokéMon Greg had ever seen. Almost fifteen feet long, the blue serpent-like Dragon PokéMon glided gracefully onto the earth. Its large black eyes made Greg feel very at peace even as he was about to do battle. Shake it off Breal, Greg urged himself, you have to beat this guy or you're done for.

Greg quickly analyzed the Dragonair data on his panel. It would be Zach's trump card, it seemed. Dragonair only had two weaknesses: Ice and Dragon-type attacks. Fire-type attacks would be little damage. Damn. Greg pondered how he could do this, and suddenly wished he had saved Walrein for now. Such a powerful Ice-type PokéMon would have been more than useful against Dragonair.

Having few choices, Greg decided on one strategy that could work: "Magmar, use Confuse Ray!"

Dragonair, unable to avoid the attack, was struck with confusion. With Dragonair confused, Greg thought hopefully, I may be able to better my chances of winning.

Zach seemed slightly irritated, but gave an order anyway: "Dragonair, use Dragon Rage!" The Dragon PokéMon, though obviously bewildered, obeyed, spewing a fire-like substance at Magmar.

"Magmar, counter it with Flamethrower!" Greg exclaimed. He hoped that Magmar would be strong enough to hold his own as he thought out his next attack strategy.

"Now, Dragonair, use Slam!"

From out of nowhere, a long whip of a body smashed Magmar in the side, which though in pain continued to use Flamethrower on his opponent. When he stopped, Dragonair looked severely burnt, probably more from touching Magmar than from the Flamethrower.

Greg smiled, knowing the meaning of a Burn status affliction. Dragonair would now be harmed by the burn and have its Attack power cut by almost 20%. Thankful for Magmar's special Ability, Greg took advantage of the Burn.

"Magmar, use Cross Chop!" Greg commanded, knowing that Dragonair had no resistance to Fighting-type Attacks. Magmar leaped into the air, flying over Dragonair and landing behind it. It then crossed its arms and charged, slamming Dragonair hard enough to bring it to one-fourth of its health, but Greg noticed that something was wrong almost immediately. Dragonair could have easily moved, but Zach hadn't told it too. Then Greg realized what Zach was doing. Crap. He has me.

"Dragonair," Zach ordered, acting now, "Use Wrap!"

Dragonair moved with stunning quickness, restraining Magmar with ease. It seemed oblivious to Magmar's body temperature. Damn. I forgot. Shed Skin ability, thought Greg, stunned at his idiocy. He had forgotten that Dragonair could recover quite quickly from any status affliction thanks to its healing abilities.

"Now, Dragonair, finish Magmar with Water Pulse!" Zach ordered relentlessly. Greg felt utterly hopeless. Zach had done it all so quickly... It seemed almost inhuman. Watching more out of disbelief than anything else, Greg could see Dragonair charging up the attack in the pearl-like object on its neck. That's it! Greg thought suddenly.

"Quickly, Magmar, use Psychic!"

Magmar grunted as it struggled, but then its eyes lit up ferociously, and a pale glow enveloped its body as Dragonair was sent crashing into a wall, its health almost completely drained.

"Finish it Magmar! Use Fire Blast!" Greg yelled, but Zach was just as quick to react.

"Go, Dragonair, use your Thunder attack!"

---

Jennifer watched wide-eyed and worried as the Thunder and Fire Blast collided between the two Poke'Mon, filling the stadium with a blinding light, followed by a merciless cry.

"Dragonair! Use Outrage!"

And Jenn felt once again, stronger than every before, that Greg would not win this round, or the next, or the final round. It's over, Greg.

---

Greg knew exactly what had happened, even if he could not see it. Dragonair had used its most powerful attack at the very end: Outrage. Greg had the feeling that there was no way Magmar could have even come out of it alive.

Fortunately, Magmar was alive. Barely. Greg stared at the pitiful creature for only a few second before returning it. He had lost round four.

"And Zach Takahi wins yet another round!"

Greg looked at his feet in shame as the crowd cheered, asking for more. Oh, I'll give them more, Greg thought wrathfully, I'll show them exactly what it means to be a winner. I - will - not - lose. Greg continued to glare at Zach for several moments. You won't be getting out of this with a win, Takahi. I promise it.

---

Zach Takahi felt satisfied. He may as well claim victory now. With three wins, Greg could only try and make the entire battle a draw. Unfortunately for him, I will not allow Gregory to have that choice.

Moving calmly and subtly, Zach prepared his next combatant. Do not let me down, he thought as he waited. It would be Greg who started this time.

---

"Alright," the coach yelled, "Fifth round. Keep up this great time, and we'll have enough time for ten minutes of lecture! Go, battle!"

Greg quickly selected his final PokéMon, Metagross. Greg knew that Metagross was powerful, and could probably keep up a good fight. But that's also what I knew about Magmar, Walrein, and the others, Greg reminded himself. He couldn't allow his thinking to be diverted from the battle. But Greg did, however, take one quick look into the crowd until he found the people he knew. Piggie sat down now, no longer cheering or excited. He almost looked worried.

Next was Kassy and Mariah, who were sitting next to the other girls. They were all talking excitedly about something, but all still looked almost... Frightened, maybe?

The last person Greg looked for was Jennifer, but suddenly he couldn't find her. For some reason, Greg felt hurt inside. Had he really expected someone who he had just met to care? Had he really expected anyone to care? He gave himself a mental wake up call. No one cared before, and they wouldn't know. He had to do this himself, along side the PokéMon who had been put as combatants in this unfortunate war between the two extremes: the winner and the loser.

---

Jennifer had disappeared into the stadium bathrooms. She didn't feel that she could take the suspense or drama any longer. I just hope Greg doesn't notice, she thought. Jenn had a feeling it could easily make him feel abandoned.

She might come back, to watch the last round, but for now, Jennifer Sullivan would listen to her own thoughts.

---

This is it. Win or lose, Zach Takahi is going to destroy me the best he can, Greg thought despairingly. He then sent out Metagross; he doubted that it would help at all, but he would try regardless of the odds.

“Go, Metagross!”

Zach answered with his own release, “Go, Roselia!”

Greg was not surprised to see the undamaged Grass-type to return, but was slightly pleased. Metagross, used correctly, would rip it to pieces. Greg also knew, however, that Zach probably had considered such odds.

“Metagross, use Earthquake!” Greg commanded, hoping to weaken Roselia enough for Metagross to take down with a Psychic attack.

Roselia fell to the ground and was thrashed around, lowering its health more than halfway. Glad to see such effectiveness, Greg waited to see how Zach would react.

Zach did not. He seemed unfazed and merely watched as Roselia got back up. What is his strategy? Greg wondered, confused by the lack of action. Then he noticed something on the data panel; Roselia’s attacks would have almost no effect on Metagross. Thanks to Metagross’ type combination of Steel/Psychic, Poison and Grass-type attacks were almost worthless. Even better was Metagross’ ability, his stats could not be lowered. It seemed that in this battle, Greg would win.

Taking advantage of this power, Greg ordered the next and possibly final attack: “Use Psychic, Metagross!”

Suddenly Zach gave an order, “Roselia, use Grasswhistle!”

Roselia acted quickly, singing a tune that put Metagross into a deep slumber. “Now, use Leech Seed!” Zach ordered. The Roselia now shot a flurry of seeds into the air, all of which landed on the now slumbering Metagross. Once they landed, the seeds burst open, covering Metagross with vines that would supply Roselia with health leeched from Metagross.

Damn, Greg thought, how does he did that so quickly? Whenever I am about to attack he manages to send off an order to his PokéMon, which prevents me from doing it. Suddenly, Greg had an idea.

“Return, Metagross!” Greg ordered. He then did something that may have surprised the crowd, “Go, Golem!”

The large rock PokéMon returned once more into the battle. Zach seemed startled by the choice to, but seemed to decide that he could take advantage of this.

“Roselia, use Petal Dance!” Zach ordered. Roselia began to move towards Golem, but Greg gave his quick order.

“Golem, use Explosion!”

The entire crowd gasped at the order, but Golem obeyed immediately, glowing white and then enveloping the field with an explosion that created an enormous crater. Almost everyone had covered their ears to defend themselves from the explosion, but no one was prepared for what they saw now; both Roselia and Golem sat in the crater, fainted.

“It’s a draw! The fifth round is a draw!” the coach announced it as if he were more amazed than anyone else.

There were not many cheers in the crowd after this; Greg thought of it more as an amazed silence. Maybe now they know just how desperate I am now, but now I’m screwed. I lost. I lost it all in one round.

---

Jennifer had felt the Explosion from inside the stadium walls. Frightened and unsure of what was going on, she decided to step outside and see what had happened.

It became apparent to her that whatever had happened, Greg had not won. She could tell because she could see him from where she stood in the walkway into the stadium stands. That’s it then. Greg lost, she thought sadly. It was more than shameful what had happened. It was embarrassing to Greg. He had been forced to lose in front of the entire school. It felt wrong to watch him.

Jennifer decided that it would be better to just stay out of his way. There would be no congratulatory conversation or anything. She would just walk away. She always just walked away. It seemed to work a lot better than anything else she could do.

---

At the end of the fifth round, Professor Warren came into the stadium center on the pedestal. He raised himself and turned on the microphone for his announcement.

“For the sixth and final round,” he said, “these two students will be having a classic showdown. They will use all their remaining PokéMon until they have all fainted. This round will be worth two, yes, two points.”

Greg’s attention was captured at that instant. Two points? I can still make this a draw! he thought excitedly. Invigorated, Greg looked at his remaining PokéMon. Misdreavus and Metagross. Both of them with some damage. But Zach has a Crobat, Dragonair, Hitmontop, and then another PokéMon he hasn’t even used yet. It doesn’t look very good for me, Greg thought, pondering the overwhelming odds. I will try. That is all that is important.

After the professor had left the field, Zach released his first choice for battle.

“Go, Crobat!”

Still with only a little health, Greg decided to use an all out assault to destroy Zach’s already weak PokéMon. “Go, Metagross!”

A now fully awake and mostly healthy Metagross was on the field.

“Crobat, use Shadow Ball!” Zach ordered.

Greg gave an order as quickly as possible; “Metagross, dodge and use Psychic!”

Leaping to the left of the targeted area, Metagross managed to narrowly escape the Shadow Ball, striking Crobat with a super-effective Psychic attack that completely decimated Crobat, knocking it out.

Satisfied with a quick knockout, Greg realized that there was little that Zach could do with these only partially helpful PokéMon, and Zach knew that. He was sacrificing them so he could build a strategy to fit his final PokéMon.

Then there is nothing I can do except hope that whatever he has in store for me is not as powerful as he thinks it is, Greg realized, filled with dread. He had a feeling that his hope would not be one possible of becoming a truth.

Zach selected his next PokéMon: “Go, Hitmontop!”

Greg again saw the pattern. Zach was sacrificing each of his damaged PokéMon in order to wear his down before the last PokéMon was selected.

Zach gave yet another reckless order: “Hitmontop, use High Jump Kick!”

“Psychic, Metagross!” Greg called out again. This was becoming repetitive. Maybe that was another part of Zach’s strategy, to drive Greg to the brink of wanting to jump off this command stand. Hitmontop was hit with a super-effective attack, joining its comrade Crobat on the list of PokéMon fainted in Round Six on the scoreboard.

Greg had a good idea of what was next and what he would have to do. As if reading his mind, Zach released one of his last two PokéMon: “Go, Dragonair! Use Thunderbolt on Metagross!”

The Thunderbolt hit Metagross head on, draining a third of its health. “Metagross,” Greg ordered, “use Meteor Mash!” With stunning swiftness, Metagross went flying towards Dragonair like a missile, and hit accurately.

“Yes! A critical hit!” Greg exclaimed as Dragonair’s health drained. It reached its lowest point before hitting zero, and stopped. What? It should have fainted! Suddenly Greg remembered what Zach had said earlier. “You know Breal, it helps to use berries during a battle.” Greg pounded his fist on the panel. His anger lessened, however, when he remembered that Zach had one PokéMon he had left in reserve and was willing to sacrifice everything to use. It will probably be strong, Greg thought ominously, strong enough to tear right through Metagross and Misdreavus.

Zach took this moment of Greg’s distraught disbelief to attack: “Dragonair, use Earthquake!” This immediately took Greg’s attention; if he didn’t act quickly, Metagross could be severely weakened.

“Metagross, levitate!” But Greg was too late now. Dragonair had already started the attack, and Metagross had been shaken enough by the super-effective attack to be at only 30% of its health. Greg groaned. If Metagross was defeated before Zach sent out his last PokéMon…Then I’ll only have Misdreavus to rely on.

Greg looked at Zach. He was no longer as calm looking as before. He looked extremely irritated, actually. Greg turned back to the battle. He did have one option, but he wanted to save it until Zach unleashed his final PokéMon. I may not have much choice if this next move doesn’t work, Greg reminded himself.

He decided to give the final order to Metagross: “Metagross, use Hyper Beam!”

Zach countered this with his own order: “Use Hyper Beam, Dragonair!”

The two beams met and canceled each other out, leaving two utterly exhausted PokéMon in the field. Greg was tempted to switch PokéMon, but decided not to. It would be a waste to lose Misdreavus, who had proved her worth earlier. Greg decided to try one last move.

“Metagross, use Ice Punch!”

Greg could see the surprise on Zach’s face. Metagross, although he seemed restricted, was actually fairly flexible as a PokéMon; it has a fairly large attack listing to choose from. Thankfully, one move on there is one that Dragonair is weak too!

Metagross leapt upon its foe, holding Dragonair down with its arms before lifting one up to give the finishing blow. Zach watched calmly as the arm fell, causing Dragonair to screech in pain. Greg actually closed his eyes to keep from looking until Zach returned the creature. That was for Magmar, Walrein, Heracross, and Golem, Greg thought as he opened his eyes and watched Zach.

He has one PokéMon left, Greg thought trying to plan ahead, I can only hope that Metagross can weaken it enough for Misdreavus to take over. Then Zach put his hand on the panel, releasing his last combatant.

“Go, Tryanitar!”

Damn. Greg heard the name and then the all too familiar roar, but nothing that followed. Greg watched in horror as a fully-grown, Tryanitar appeared. Covered in scales made of stone, the prehistoric looking beast was one Greg hoped to never encounter in his life ever again. He couldn’t give an order to Metagross; Greg found that his voice wouldn’t work for him. He was frozen and could only watch as Zach unleashed its horrible fury.

“Tryanitar, use Crunch to finish off this weakling,” Zach commanded. Greg watched, without meaning to, as Metagross, although it tried to get away, was pinned by Tryanitar’s powerful arms. Feeling as if he might pass out, Greg continued to watch as Metagross failingly tried to stop the Dark-type attack from commencing. A sharp crack followed by loud squealing forced Greg to close his eyes. No! Greg heard inside of himself, No! You will not let this happen again! Never again!

“Metagross,” Greg screamed, “Use Explosion!”

The blast happened instantly, enveloping the entire field with a blinding light and the roar of a bomb going off. Never again…

---

Zach Takahi had noticed Gregory Breal’s reaction to the release of Tryanitar, and he suddenly felt a pang of regret; a feeling Takahi had not often enough. Something had happened to Breal at some point that he had never quite recovered from.

Perhaps, Zach began to think, there is more to Gregory Breal than what one sees. And then the aftershock of the Explosion overtook the stadium.

---

When the dust cleared, Jennifer could see on the scoreboard that the Explosion attack had not done much to harm Tryanitar. But perhaps that Explosion was not meant to harm anyone, she considered. Greg’s expression at the appearance of the Tryanitar was one Jennifer had not seen in many years… Not since… Jenn pushed the memory away and then went to where the teachers were sitting. She didn’t feel well, and wanted to know if she could wait outside of the stadium until her next class.

Good luck, Greg, she thought sadly, You’ll need it.

---

Greg had almost no choices left; “Go, Misdreavus,” he ordered half-heartedly. This would probably be over quickly, unless Zach felt like toying with him again. Greg knew that it could go quickly or slowly; most of Misdreavus’s attacks were completely useless against the Rock and Dark-type Tryanitar. Not only that, but Tryanitar could easily use one move to destroy her. It’s a waste, Greg thought, giving up.

There was nothing more he could do. Unless... Greg lifted his head and considered the idea. It could work, and if Misdreavus could avoid enough attacks… It could work…

“Misdreavus, use Perish Song!” Greg yelled, hoping that he had acted in time. The Ghost PokéMon began to sing its most deadly tune, and Tryanitar was definitely affected. Yes! Now we’re getting somewhere! Greg thought excitedly, now all he had to do was-

“Tryanitar, use Aerial Ace!” Zach cried out, sounding half desperate and half calm. Greg watched it happen as if it were in slow motion. Tryanitar leaped through the air as if it could fly, and moving almost too fast to even see, it struck Misdreavus.

No. Goddamn it, no… Greg collapsed to his knees as he returned his PokéMon and felt like crying. That was it. It was finally over. The final score was Zach, 5 points, Greg 1. Gregory Breal had lost, and for him it would be a loss that would never be forgotten, because it was more than just his first loss, it was a loss that no one with dignity could walk away from. Good thing I don’t have dignity, Greg thought, trying to make a joke. He continued to sit there on the command stand until the bell rang and he was lowered to the ground. As he walked on to his next class, he heard only whispers from those behind him, all of them about him.

That’s the loser.

a nice chapter with some very good battle description again. I did however spot one mistake where Zach sent out a Dragonair against Gregs Magmar yet at the end when he sent it out again it was a Dragonite either that was one fast evolution or a mistake on your part (No big deal). Anyway can't wait to find out about what Gregs reaction to Tyranitar is about. Keep up the good work

Oops. It was supposed to be Dragonair. Thanks for catching that, Lostsoulz0. I'll get to fixing that...

And I regret to say that I gave the wrong title at the very end. These are the right ones...

Chapter 5: Nightmare - Will hopefully be done before tomorrow...

Chapter 6: Final Exam - Saturday is when I hope to get this up.

Chapter 7: Meet The Squad - Maybe Sunday or Monday.

Woo...Time to get to work on Chap. 5...

The day ended after a very dull class of science and Math. Greg almost immediately went to the dorms. He had no intention of hanging out in the courtyard. Along the way, Greg ran into Piggie, who stopped him.

"Greg, dude, that was the greatest battle I've ever seen! You totally kick butt!" Piggie exclaimed excitedly. Greg was confused.

"I lost, Piggie," he told him.

Piggie grinned and shrugged, "So? Sure, losing sucks, but losing like that was...like...awesome. You fought like hell today! I didn't think you had it in you!" Greg tried to smile, but he couldn't. No matter what Piggie said, Greg had been completely thrashed by Zach, and there was nothing that would change that. "Well, thanks Piggie, but I think I'm just going to go inside-"

"Whoa! No way, Breal. You're going to stay out here, just for a little while. 'Sides, maybe you could find that hot chick you were with earlier," Piggie proposed, smiling. Greg blushed at this, "Jennifer? How did you-"

Piggie shrugged, "I just saw you walk into the stadium and sit with her, that's all." Greg decided to go along with Piggie. What's the worse that could happen? Greg reassured himself.

While walking around the courtyard, Greg noticed a big group of people all huddled up in the corner near where Greg had talked to the girls in the morning. Piggie noticed too, Greg thought, but didn't pay any attention to it. Instead, he kept trying to lead Greg away from it.

"Piggie, what are they doing over there?" Greg finally asked.

Piggie shrugged as if he didn't know, and tried to push Greg along, "It's probably nothing interesting. Let's just go."

"Wait, I want to see what they're doing," Greg said, getting irritated now. Piggie was hiding something, but he couldn't tell what.

"You don't want to go over there, Greg, I'm telling you, mate-"

"You don't know what I want, Piggie. I've barely even met you. I'm going to go take a look," Greg said. He felt sorry, especially after seeing the hurt look on Piggie's face, but quickly recovered from this guilt-trip when Piggie just flipped him off and stomped away.

Rolling his eyes at the dramatics, Greg walked over just to take a look. He noticed however that as he passed by people walking away that they would just laugh. Confused, Greg tried to figure out why. Is there something in my hair? he wondered, but could see soon enough why people were laughing. Where everyone was grouped together was some graffiti. "Welcome to Aquara City, Breal, Loser of Pyre Village!"

Greg looked on in disbelief. Why would someone do this? he asked himself, suddenly embarrassed. Greg almost immediately turned around and went back to the dorms. He passed Piggie, who said something to him along the lines of, "I told you, mate."

Greg immediately slammed the door to his room and sat down on his bed to think. He wouldn't cry, he had long outgrown that, but he would consider what this would lead to. It wasn't imperative for people to like him or to be popular, but it would make social things easier.

Now it looks like his sociality just went down from "the new kid" to the "loser from Pyre Village." I guess that's it then, Greg concluded, I'll just have to finish this year and that's it. No more dealing with people and what they think. I can get my license, capture some PokéMon, and then prove myself to everyone. I will never lose again, Greg convinced himself.

---

Jennifer had already seen the graffiti, and actually had seen Greg rush back to the boy's dormitory, and she had a feeling she might know enough about Greg Breal to want to avoid him for a while.

He was not the kind of person who made friends easily, Jennifer thought. He could be friendly and possibly even fun, but Jenn didn't know for sure. And I probably never will, she reminded herself. Jennifer had asked to have her classes changed so that she would only have one class with Greg, Battle Class, which would also be a class where she could hide away from him.

Apparently she wasn't the only one asking for a change. When she left the office, Zach Takahi sat next in line. She said nothing to him, only glancing for a moment, before she left.

It would be a very weird year, she predicted.

---

Looking outside his window, Greg probably would have lost track of the hours if he hadn't had a watch. Only 6:00...it will be dinnertime soon, Greg remembered. He may as well go eat out in the courtyard tonight; the janitor had wiped down the wall and the message was gone. And so is everyone else.

Piggie had come back once or twice to grab something, but had never really said anything. Greg had tried to apologize, but he had a feeling that Piggie understood. It was kind of nice to know that at least someone had shown some concern, even if he didn't need it.

Walking out of the door, Greg went down the hall. The entire dorm was empty as far as he could tell; everyone had gone into town to hang out or were somewhere in the school doing the same thing. Greg hoped that this would be a quick trip into the cafeteria to pick up some food and then to go eat in the courtyard.

It seemed a lot longer of a trip once he walked into the cafeteria. There were already quite a few tables filled, people talking about nothing in particular. Or at least, they were talking about nothing until now. Now they had something to talk about. As if losing wasn't bas enough, Greg thought.

He heard the whispers as loudly as if the students were talking to him. "That's the new kid; Gregory Breal, the loser." "Yep. That's him. Did you seem him at the very end? What a baby! He was about to cry and everything!" "Heh, watch out guys; I hear that losing is contagious."

"Loser."

By the time Greg had made it out to the courtyard, not far from where he had sat at lunch, he felt that it wouldn't matter how many names people called him. He had no reason to listen to them. And one day, I'll show them. I'll give them a reason to respect me, and I'll do it by never losing again.

Greg's hand were shaking so badly that he found he was incapable of opening the wrapping his food came in. Feeling defeated he began to cry. He released from with in himself everything that had become stored up over the years. He cried for his loss. For his loneliness. For his failures. For his past. Greg did not stop crying for a long time.

---

Jennifer had been seen Greg from her window. She had already eaten her dinner, and was sitting in her dorm room, playing around on her computer. When she looked out the window, she watched as Greg came out the cafeteria and sat in the garden part of the courtyard.

Is he...crying? she wondered, moving closer. She couldn't tell from so far away. The only thing she noticed was that the thermometer on her computer's internet page read the outside temperature at a low 45?. Concerned, Jennifer decided to go down and check on him.

Grabbing her coat and a blanket, Jenn walked down the hall as if she were in no hurry. She didn't want to draw any attention to Greg or her for that matter. Hopefully, she wouldn't have to do much. Something about Greg after the battle with Zach had scared her, and she hadn't even spoken to him yet. He seemed... angry. Like Zach. Jennifer shook her head and decided to not compare Zach and Greg again. Even if they had some similarities, she had no right to level either one to a subject that she was observing.

Finally getting to the courtyard, Jenn first checked to make sure no one was around, but then walked towards Greg. When she approached closer to where he was sitting, she could see that he was trying to open the wrapper around his sandwich, but couldn't because his hands were shaking. From the cold or from crying, she couldn't tell, but he definitely was crying.

Greg didn't acknowledge at all whether he had noticed Jennifer, but it didn't bother her. She only wanted to help calm him down anyway. Draping the blanket over his shoulders, Jennifer sat next to him and held his hands. They stopped shaking, and he looked straight at her, his face still wet from tears and red from crying. She smiled and then helped him open his sandwich.

"Thanks," he said, smiling slightly. It quickly disappeared. "You didn't have to-"

"It's okay," Jennifer interrupted him. He seemed slightly surprised, but then turned back to his sandwich and mumbled thanks again. Uneasy with the silence, Jennifer put her hands in her lap and waited until the right moment. When she noticed that Greg hadn't eaten his sandwich yet.

"Do you want to talk about it?" she asked him. He began to shake his head when a voice she recognized all to well came in.

"There's nothing to talk about; he's a loser. That in itself benefits a good cry," said Zach cruelly. He didn't look at Jenn, just at Greg. Greg glared right back. Zach did not back down or wait, which Jennifer noted was not only the way that Zach fought, but insulted people too.

"But he's not just a loser because he didn't win today's little tournament. No. He's been a loser from the time he was a little kid. Or, as the Daily Islander described you, a monster."

Jennifer was confused now, but Greg stood up. "How do you know this?" Greg demanded, still glaring. Jenn could sense some fear in the statement, however.

"How do I know this? How can't I know it. You were the biggest scandal for an entire year. 'Little Boy Leads Mother To Own Death,' were the headlines," Zach retorted.

Frightened, Jennifer broke into the conversation. "Stop! Both of you!" She then turned to Greg, "What is he saying? Why were you a scandal?"

Greg became silent suddenly and looked at his feet. "I... I don't want to talk about this." Greg was about to walk away, when suddenly Zach called to him again.

"That's right, Gregory. Just run away. It saved you the first time, why wouldn't it work the second? Or is this the third? Then again, how many times have you run away?" Zach continued to taunt Greg until finally he stopped.

Greg looked up at the sky and shook his head. "You have no idea-"

Zach laughed at that, cruel and heartlessly. "Of what? No idea of what it means to be such a coward? To be such a loser? You're right," Zach said with sudden sternness, "I don't."

Greg then ran inside.

---

Zach had known after he had destroyed Greg in that battle that he had been wrong on instinct. Greg was nothing special; no certain threat. He might have been decent for a rookie, but he had nothing that it took to become anything more.

Suddenly, he heard someone behind him, the girl. "Why did you do that to him?" she asked, almost pleadingly.

Zach frowned and looked over at her, answering her question simple in a few words. "To see his reaction. It was merely to confirm what I already knew."

The girl looked at him curiously. She didn't appear angry about the rough treatment, merely confused. "And what was that?" she asked.

"That he is no one of importance to me," Zach told her. He began to walk away, but felt her hold him still by his arm.

"Wait, explain what you know," she said. What Zach had said to Gregory apparently interested the girl, but he shook his head.

"I am not at liberty to discuss such personal material with you. If Breal wants you to know, he'll tell you, but trust me when I say that the 'Greg' you think you know is nothing but a lie. You can do some research on it if you wish. I did, and I found it quite profitable."

With that, Zach walked away, towards his own dormitory room. He was through with talking today. His throat was starting to hurt.

---

Jennifer had been caught off guard by what Zach had said, but not enough to be intrigued by what he had said. Research on Gregory Breal… The idea seemed odd to Jenn. See decided to look into it.

Rushing up to her room, Jennifer found that Kassy, who was her roommate, had left a note by her bed. “Out shopping with Mariah and the girls, be back by midnight. Promise. Kisses, Kassy.” Jenn sighed and threw the note in the trash by her computer desk.

Sitting down, Jennifer opened the internet and went straight to a search engine. She typed in the name “Gregory Breal” and waited to see what would come up. Suddenly, the top ten results appeared. Some of them surprised her.

Stunned, Jennifer began to read through each article. If this is true… she thought to herself, shocked by what had happened only eight years ago. Dear God…

This is what Takahi meant by all those things he said, she realized.

---

Greg decided to just get the day over with and sleep. He tried not to think of everything that had happened. Losing to Takahi, then being humiliated. Thinking of all of these things brought back one of Greg’s most painful memories.

He had been crying all day, sitting on his father’s lap as they watched the rain fall outside. Over by the big oak tree was the makeshift graveyard; Greg’s family couldn’t afford a real funeral. His father sat the entire day without talking, and Greg had sat on his lap the entire day, crying. Then he turned to his dad and said, “Dad, does God hate us?”

His father never answered, but Greg knew that day that something inside of his father had completely given up and died. Greg often remembered this day. It was the last day he had been allowed to stay with his father until the social workers came and took Greg to his grandmother’s house. Greg would sometimes visit his dad, but ended eventually too. It only started again three years ago, when Greg almost lost him.

Greg drifted to sleep at some point, teary eyed and fatigued.

---

Come on, Greggy!” his mother called, young and beautiful. She was wearing her favorite orange blouse and blue skirt. “Come on, Greggy! I’ll race you to the caves!” she called to him. A five-year-old Greg scurried over the rocks to her.

“Wait mommy! I’m can’t keep up!” Greg cried out.

“Come on, Greggy! You can do it!” his mother told him, walking towards the cavern behind her. “Just a little farther!” she said.

Greg tried, but he couldn’t get up onto the boulder. His mother merely shook her head and walked towards the cave. “I guess if you can’t get yourself up here, then we won’t be able to go to the beach,” she said in a menacingly kind way.

Greg shook his head, shouting, “No! no! I can do it! I can do it!”

His mother laughed, “That’s the spirit. Now, hurry-“

Suddenly, from behind her came a horrible roar. “Gregory, stay there,” his mother said quietly, fearfully. “But mommy-“ “No! Do as I say, and stay where you are.”

The roar got louder as the creature emerged from its cavern. “Gregory, run!” his mother screamed. Gregory didn’t look back, frightened and confused. He only turned once, and that was when he heard the most horrible scream ever. He watched as his mother fell from its jaw, and it reared its head to roar once more.

Gregory waited a few minutes, waiting for the monster to leave, and then went to his mother. “Mommy,” he said, shaking her arm, “Wake up mommy, you have to get up. Hurry, before the monster comes back, mommy!” Greg eventually realized that his mother was not going to wake up.

“Wait here, mommy. I’ll get daddy! He can wake you up! Just wait!”

---

After Greg returned home and retrieved his father, the dream ended. It ended with the most painful part of it. The sound of his father’s voice rang through his ears now, as he lay wakened. “How could you let this happen, Greg? Why? Why?”

Greg got up from his bed and went to the dorm-bathrooms to get some water before he went back to bed. He looked at his watch. 3:28. Damn. Greg went back to his room and lay in his bed. He could not get back to sleep.

Next time: Chapter 6, Final Exam!

You are my only fear
Hello.

Sorry, I missed replying to a few chapters. I don't really review much. But I am impressed with your work. Now, onto the Chapter 5 review...
Well, this was an.. entertaining chapter, if you get the jist. I liked it. The way you explained Greg's past was very good. I also thought that the way you portray Zach is very good. From the way I read his description, I saw that it was actually the same character you see him as. But looks can be decieving.. I also like Jenn's reaction to what happened. Now, the bad. I didn't find much besides shortness, which isn't actually bad. I didn't see any grammar, or spelling mistakes lately, although I believe I saw a punctuation mistake in one of the earlier chapters... But nevermind that. You did great. Good luck with the next chapter.

G'day

Thanks, Evander. :D

I also thought it was a bit short, but just like the first chapter, it served its purpose, I think. I'll try to see if there was any punctuation; I've been typing these up on Word to make sure they don't have spelling error's anymore, jsut because no one wants to read a story they can't... well... read.

But anyway, thank you. I'm glad you enjoyed it. (And even though you don't review much, you give very good reviews. I think that makes up for it plenty.)

I'm hoping to have Chapter 6 up soon. I got distracted and couldn't finish the chapter yesterday. This one won't be very long, but it will be important for what happens later. And that is all I shall say.
