How do you know which legendary cat you get in a game or is this just a random thing as to which legendary cat you can try to catch?

How do you find the cats before you see them the first time to be able to track them?

To know which one it is you simply figure which "cat" had a type advantage against your starter, like if you picked Charmander you'd find Suicune.

Also, you find them randomly, anywhere in the grass around Kanto (contiguous Kanto, no Sevii) after you beat the E-4.

actuslly, the whole "cat" or "dog" thing is a matter of opinion. and you also need the national dex after you beat the E4

And the easiest way is as follows:

1. Get a Pokemon at level 49.
2. Buy a Max Repel.
3. Go to a patch of grass. (Any route will do, but it has to be in Kanto.)
4. Put the level 49 Pokemon first in your party.
5. Equip the Bicycle.
6. Use the Max Repel.
7. Save.
8. Bike around in the grass until the repel runs out.
9. If you don't see the Beast, turn off the game (without saving) and run around again.

~Bent~ listed a wonderful strategy for hunting down the three legendaries. As for the dog/cat debate*, it's solely a matter of opinion. Have you ever seen an actual dog or cat that breathed fire or tossed electricity? Probably not.

Edit: *...or according to the post below me, dog/cat/gerbil debate, since gerbils are all-powerful.

Side note:

If you know the art of IV's (Individual Values), once you calculate it...you're not gonna like it. Just like what happened when I caught all 3 legendary dogs/gerbils.

4.) equip a lvl 39-49 pokemon
use max repel
save
walk around grass
no animal then reset.

You will always find the legendary that is strong against your starter, and I think that Suicune is a phanter, Entei a lion and Raikou is a tiger.
