TRJessie579

Obsessive Beader/Mod
Thanks to Shining Mew for the list of rules, and Trip for the original FAQ, which I’m rewriting and updating.

First off, this is the specific section for FireRed/LeafGreen, there is also a general 3rd generation section where you can find the following stickies:

Shiny Sticky/FAQ
What Is Your Team Thread
EVs/IVs FAQ/Discussion Sticky
Breeding Help/Discussion Sticky

Please do not make threads on these subjects in this section, post in those stickies instead.

RULES

--->Main Forum Rules apply here too obviously.
http://www.serebiiforums.com/showthread.php?t=148029

1.) AWAYS check the whole section of this forum before you post a new thread, there's a good chance you'll find the answer. Don't be lazy and help cut the spam.

2) Do NOT answer a question where you don't answer and say "i don't know" or go on about something completely different. That’s useless and spam.

3) Do NOT put an answer to a question if its already been posted, the exception would be when someone posted like a minute before you but otherwise just don't bother.

4) Check the stickies! Don’t make threads with questions that are answered/should be posted in a sticky.

5) Keep dicussions ON topic

6) Do NOT talk about sharking or anything like that. In game ones like the old Rare Candy one, fair enough but not outside help cheating devices. THIS MEANS NO DISCUSSION OF GAMESHARK OR ACTION REPLAY OR ANY OTHER CHEATING DEVICE OF THAT NATURE. DO NOT REQUEST CODES.

Update: Please don't make topics like "is it considered cheating if I cheat for _____?" or "will a traded cheated Pokemon mess up my game?" It's still discussion of cheating and these kind of topics tend to end in flamewars between the people who use cheating devices and those who don't.

7) Discussion of ROMs, emulators, etc, isn’t allowed.

8) ANY threads related to movesets on Pokémon or choosing members of your team belong in the RMT forum. Also follow the RMT rules when you go in there as well. "Give me a team" threads arent allowed.

*Please note also that question threads will be closed after the answer is given to cut spam.

FR/LG FAQ

Before asking a question in this thread or on the board, please read the FAQ, and check the main site’s FireRed/LeafGreen Section. The main site has a lot of detailed info this FAQ doesn’t have, such as version exclusive Pokemon, items and TMs, the Fame Checker, etc.

If you post a question that is answered on the main site or in this FAQ, I will be angry. Please don’t make me angry. :) Thanks very much.

And now, in no particular order:

1. Q: FireRed and LeafGREEN? Why didn’t they make Blue instead?
A: Red and Green were actually the original two Pokemon games, in Japan. Then Pokemon Blue came out, and our Red and Blue games were based on Japan’s Blue. Blue had improved graphics over Red and Green, different Pokemon locations, etc.

2. Q: What are the differences between these games and the old ones?
A: FireRed and LeafGreen are in the same generation as R/S/E, so they have the same Pokemon info—Natures, Abilities, shinies, genders, breeding, etc. Some Pokemon locations and Pokemon you trade for have been changed, and obviously the graphics are much better than they were in Red/Green. Also, all 386 Pokemon can be used in this game, though they can’t necessarily all be obtained.

The most major change from the old to the new games is the addition of the Sevii Islands, which will be discussed later in the FAQ.

3. Q: I heard NOA was going to make WaterBlue and LightningYellow! Is this true?
A: As of right now, there are no plans to make any of these games. The next Pokemon RPGs are Diamond and Pearl, for the Nintendo DS.

4. Q: Is there day/night in this game?
A: Nope, and there isn’t even a clock.

5. Q: What is the VS Seeker and where do I get it?
A: The VS Seeker allows you to rebattle field Trainers. This does NOT include Gym Leaders, or Trainers in buildings or caves. Once you use the VS Seeker, you must take 100 steps to “recharge” it and be able to use it again. You get the VS Seeker from a woman in the Vermillion Pokemon Center.

6. Q: Where do I get HM ___?
A: HM 01 Cut: You get this once you help the seasick Captain of the SS Anne in Vermillion City.
HM 02 Fly: This can be found on Route 18, West of Celadon City, by using Cut on a tree above the Bike Path. You will come to a house with a girl in it that will give it to you.
HM 03 Surf: In the Safari Zone’s Secret House.
HM 04 Strength: If you find the Warden’s Gold Teeth in the Safari Zone and return them to him, he will reward you with this.
HM 05 Flash: If you have at least 10 Pokemon in your ‘Dex, go to a building on Route 2, below Diglett’s Cave. One of Professor Oak’s aids will give it to you.
HM 06 Rock Smash: In Ember Spa, on One Island.
HM 07 Waterfall: In Icefall Cave, on Four Island.
HM 08 Dive: This HM is not obtainable in this game, only in R/S/E.

7. Q: Why won’t the Saffron City guard take my Fresh Water?
A: To prevent people from getting into Saffron early by trading in a Fresh Water, they’ve changed the item you need to give to the guard. On the first floor of the Celadon Mansion is an old woman who will give you the “Tea” item. This is what the guard will accept to let you pass.

8. Q: Where is the Move Deleter in this game?
A: Fuchsia City, in between the Pokemon Center and the Gym.

9. Q: My Golbat/Chansey stops evolving even when I didn’t press B! What’s going on?
A: Since Crobat and Blissey are Johto Pokemon, they can’t be obtained until you have the National Dex. Once you get it, your Pokemon will evolve.

10. Q: How do I get the National Dex?
A: After you beat the Elite Four, if you have 60 or more Pokemon caught in your Pokedex, you will get the National Dex automatically. If not, get 60 Pokemon and then go talk to Oak, he will give it to you.

11. Q: Are there more Johto Pokemon in this game?
A: Yes, once you have the National Dex you can go to Four Island and the rest, which have Johto Pokemon running around.

12. Q: How do I get the Leftovers/Macho Brace/Soothe Bell?
A: In FR/LG, these are items you can only get in a special way. You have to stand on a specific spot and use the Itemfinder. It will tell you that an item is “buried” underneath the ground, and will unearth it for you. The Leftovers is located under both Snorlax, the Macho Brace under Giovanni in the Viridian City Gym, and the Soothe Bell under Mr. Fuji in Lavender Tower. Remember that you have to stand on the EXACT SPOT they were on and use the Itemfinder to get the item.

13. Q: I went with Bill to the Sevii Islands and now I’m lost. What do I do?
A: Before you can go back, you have to save a girl on Three Island, in the Berry Forest, from a Hypno. Once you do, and talk to her father on Two Island, you can go back to Kanto.

14. Q: Why isn’t Moltres in Victory Road?
A: It’s been moved to One Island in this game. Just go North to Mt. Ember to find it.

15. Q: I’ve beaten the E4. Now what?
A: Once you've gotten the Ruby (see question 17) go back to One Island to talk to Celio, he will give you the Rainbow Pass, which allows you to go to Four Island.

16. Q: How do I trade with R/S/E? The game is telling me I’m not ready to trade yet!
A: In order to trade with R/S/E, you need to beat the E4 and get the National Dex, then complete Celio’s island quest by fixing the Network Machine. You need to find the Ruby and Sapphire plates on the Islands, and once the Network Machine is fixed, you can trade.

17. Q: Where are the Ruby and Sapphire plates?
A: The Ruby plate can be found in Mt. Ember. Once you have the National Dex, defeat the Rockets in front of the cave. Then you can go in and find the Ruby. They will NOT fight you until you have the 'Dex, so see question #10 on how to get it.

The Sapphire is a little more complicated. First, you must save Lorelei in Icefall Cave, on Four Island. This is VERY important—if you don’t do this, a scientist will be blocking your way to a cave on Six Island. Once Lorelei is saved, the scientist will be gone. Use Cut on the door, and make your way through the cave, reading the Braille on the wall to figure out which door to go through. Once you’re at the bottom, you’ll find the Sapphire plate, but the scientist will come and steal it! He’ll leave a password in his place, which allows you to get into the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island. Get through the Warehouse, and you’ll finally get the Sapphire plate, which you can take to Celio. PHEW!

18. Q: How do I get the woman on Two Island to teach my starter a special move?
A: First, you need a Venusaur, Charizard, or Blastoise (it does NOT have to be the Pokemon you started with). Next, this starter must be at MAX happiness, or she will not teach it the move. Finally, put it in the first slot of your party and talk to the woman. She will teach Venusaur Frenzy Plant, Charizard Blast Burn, and Blastoise Hydro Cannon. You can teach each starter this move ONCE, per game (so you can have the woman teach a Venusaur, Charizard, AND Blastoise their special moves, not just one).

19. Q: Does this game have a Move Tutor like R/S/E?
A: Yes, and he is on Two Island. Instead of taking Heart Scales like in R/S/E, he takes either two Tiny Mushrooms or one Big Mushroom. These items can be found on wild Paras and Parasect.

20. Q: How do I get this Egg on Five Island, and what’s in it?
A: If you Surf North from Five Island, you will find a man who will offer to give you an Egg. If you have a free space in your party, and your lead Pokemon is at MAX happiness, you’ll get the Egg, which contains a Togepi.

21. Q: What does this “Tanoby Key” on Seven Island open?
A: If you solve the puzzle, it will open the Tanoby Ruins at the very South of Seven Island, which contain the Unown. Each cave has different Unown in it, so you’ll have to visit all of them if you want to get all the Unown. Unfortunately, you get absolutely nothing from capturing all 28 Unown except for the satisfaction of having wasted precious time of your life.

22. Q: How come I can’t breed in the Daycare in Cerulean City?
A: This Daycare is set up just like the one in the original games. The Daycare where you can breed is on Four Island.

23. Q: How do you get through Lost Cave, and what do you get?
A: Count the number of rocks in each room, then picture the room as a clock and go into the corresponding door. Three rocks, you go right; six, you go down; nine, you go left; twelve, you go up. This will lead you to Selphy, who will return to Resort Gorgeous. Going through other doors may lead you to items. If you go to visit Selphy, she’ll ask to see a random Pokemon. If you can bring it to her, she’ll reward you with an item, most often Luxury Balls, but sometimes Nuggets, Pearls, and other things of that nature.

24. Q: I’ve heard that the E4 gets stronger the second time you battle them! Is that true, and if so what’s different about them?
A: Yes, this is true—when you fight the E4’s “second wave,” their Pokemon are higher levels (from 10 to 12) and some have changed their teams around. Lorelei replaces Slowbro with Piloswine. Bruno's Onix is now a Steelix. Agatha's Golbat evolves and Haunter is replaced with Misdreavus. Lance evolves one Dragonair and replaces the other with Kingdra. Your rival replaces Pidgeot with Heracross and Rhydon with Tyranitar.

25. Q: How do I get Mewtwo? The guy won’t let me into Cerulean Cave!
A: Before you can get into the Cave, you need to have beaten the E4 for the first time, obtained the National Dex, and fixed the Network Machine. Only then will you be able to go in and capture Mewtwo.

26. Q1: Can I get Umbreon/Espeon in these games?
Q2: Why won’t my Eevee evolve into Umbreon/Espeon?

A: Since there is no clock in FR/LG, Eevee can not evolve into these Pokemon. Eevee needs to be in R/S/E and have max happiness in order to evolve, into Umbreon in the AM and Espeon in the PM.

26. Q: What does Altering Cave do? All I find is Zubat!
A: The speculation was that we would be able to change the Pokemon in Altering Cave through Wonderspots. These are machines that you use Mystery Gift with, and they've been used at Pokemon Rocks America and the Pokemon Center in NYC to give out the Tickets for Deoxys and Lugia/Ho-oh. Unfortunately, there have been no Wonderspots for Altering Cave (in Japan or elsewhere), so it's basically a feature that they probably had every intention of doing something cool with, but just never did for whatever reason. The Altering Cave Pokemon can be obtained in Emerald, Colosseum, and now in Pokemon: XD.

27. Q: There’s a house on Seven Island that has a room that’s blocked by stuff. What’s inside there?
A: This is another feature from the Japanese game that was left out of the English one.

Just like the similar house in R/S/E, this was for using battle e-cards. But again, there are no e-cards for the English version of FR/LG, so the house is useless.

28. Q: EVs? IVs? HP? What is all this?
A: EVs are effort values, IVs are individual values, and HP stands for Hidden Power. There are pages on the main site for all of these:

http://www.serebii.net/pokedex-rs/ev.shtml
http://www.serebii.net/games/ivs.shtml
http://www.serebii.net/games/hidden-power.shtml

Here’s a more in-depth guide on GameFAQs (you’ll need to copy/paste):

http://db.gamefaqs.com/portable/gbadvance/file/pokemon_rs_trainer.txt

29. Q1: How do I get Deoxys/Lugia/Ho-oh/Mew/Celebi/Jirachi?
Q2: How do I get to Islands 8 and 9?

A: Deoxys and Lugia/Ho-oh are obtainable only by special Tickets (the Aurora and Mystic Tickets, respectively), which are given out by Wonderspot (see question 26 for more info).

The Aurora Ticket (for Deoxys) was given out at Pokemon Rocks America and at the Pokemon Center in NYC for a few days sometime last year. There is now a current event for Deoxys in Houston, Texas--Deoxys will be available daily from March 10th to the 19th, and every Saturday and Sunday from March 25th to May 14th! More information can be found at www.pokemon.com or www.spacecenter.org.

The Mystic Ticket (for Lugia/Ho-oh, on Island 9) was given out at the opening of the Nintendo World Store, and at the San Diego Comic Con, Wizard World Chicago, the Pokemon World Championships 2005, and Pokemon Rocks America 2005. There is currently another event at the Nintendo World Store, from late January through early February, but they are not sure how long it will last for. You can also get Ho-oh in Colosseum, and Lugia in XD.

Jirachi was available through a bonus disc you got when you preordered Colosseum. It can also be obtained from the PAL version of Pokemon Channel.

Celebi was available at Pokemon's Journey Across America tour for their 10th anniversary. They came to multiple cities around the US and then to New York City for the final celebration.

Mew became available, NOT through the Old Sea Chart, but through a Nintendo promotion at Toys R Us stores in September '06, where you just had to trade any one of your Pokemon for a Mew. They were available for that one day only.

I will add info on events as I get it. Please note that I'm not putting up info on events outside the US, as there are a bunch of them and it's hard to keep track.

30. Q: Shinies? How do I get them?

A: For every Pokemon that you meet in the wild, get from an Egg, etc, there is a 1 in 8,192 chance that it will be shiny. You can try for a shiny Pokemon like a starter or a Legendary by saving in front of it and reseting the game until it is shiny.

For more info, please see the Shiny Discussion/FAQ sticky.

31. Q: Huh? My Pokemon came back to me when I tried to release it! How do I get rid of it?

A: This doesn't have to do with happiness, as the game might suggest (____ came back! Was it worried about you?), but HMs. If the Pokemon you're releasing is the only one you have with Surf (and this also seems to work on occasion with Waterfall), it can't be released. Teach another random Pokemon Surf, then try again.

32. Q: The guy at the daycare says my Pokemon don't like each other! Why? Will they breed?
A: Yes! The message that you'll get when the Pokemon are not compatible is "They prefer to play with other Pokemon." The phrase, and how many steps it takes to get an Egg, depends on your Pokemon's species and trainer ID number.

Different IDs and Same Species = Fast "The two seem to get along very well."
Different IDs and Different Species OR Same IDs and Same Species = Medium "The two seem to get along."
Same IDs and Different Species = Slow "The two don't seem to like each other."

33. Q: How do I get Munchlax/Bonsly/Manyula/Manene/Lucario?
A: YOU DON’T. These are 4th generation Pokemon, and will be obtainable to capture in the upcoming Diamond and Pearl games for DS ONLY. They do not exist in FR/LG.

34. Q: How do I get Upgrade/Metal Coat/King's Rock/Dragon Scale so I can evolve my Pokemon?
A: Up-Grade - On Five Island in the Rocket Warehouse. Use the floor with the arrows to get to the room at the top left of the Warehouse, it's in there.
Metal Coat - On Five Island at Memorial Pillar. From Five Island Surf down as far as you can and you'll come to a small piece of land with a statue on it. The Metal Coat is below the statue.
King's Rock - On Seven Island in Sevault Canyon, you need Strength and Rock Smash to access it.
Dragon Scale - On Six Island in the Water Path. From Six Island walk North until you come to water where you can Surf. Then Surf south along the side of the island to come to the item.

All four of these are also prizes from the Trainer Tower on Seven Island.

And…I think that’s about it. If any questions are asked frequently enough, I’ll add it to the FAQ.

legendaries do not breed .I meant any pokemon except legendaries.
and I think everybody know's that so you didn't have to correct me.

ANinyMouse

Human Pokédex
So, are you saying Ditto can't breed with a Pinsir that has the same OT number as the Ditto?

CHeSHiRe-CaT

A Curious Breed
Doh >.< No, Ditto can't breed with legendaries. Yes, Ditto can breed with Pokémon caught by a Trainer other than yourself, such as a Pokémon you received in a trade with your friend. Ditto can even breed with genderless (not including legendaries) Pokémon with a different Original Trainer, such as Metagross to receive Beldum eggs that take FOREVER to hatch -.-;;

...What?

Ditto can breed with any Pokemon EXCEPT those in the No Eggs group, no matter if it's from your game or someone else's game. (Genderless Pokemon like the Beldum family, etc, that are in the Genderless egg group, but NOT the No Eggs group, CAN breed with Ditto always.)

I wasn't correcting you, I was correcting [Tyranitar]. You were right. XD

Where's my fanfare?
To sum it all up, I guess you can say that:
Ditto cannot breed with Baby Pokemon (Pichu, Elekid, Azurill, Wynaut, Smoochum, Togepi, Magby, Cleffa, Igglybuff, Tyrogue, and any other I missed)
Ditto cannot breed with Unown or other Ditto.
Ditto cannot breed with legendaries (Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Entei, Raikou, Suicune, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Regirock, Regice, Registeel, Latios, Latias, Groudon, Kyogre, Deoxys, and Jirachi.)
I don't recall, but I think Ditto cannot breed with Shedinja... Not sure though oo;
Ditto can breed with any Pokemon not mentioned above, with the exception of any babies I missed.

This is answered in the FAQ...

He’ll leave a password in his place, which allows you to get into the Rocket Warehouse on Five Island. Get through the Warehouse, and you’ll finally get the Sapphire plate, which you can take to Celio. PHEW!
