My first Pokemon game was red, and I chose Bulbasaur.

TBH, Bulbasaur is the safe pick: The first few gyms go in its favor. Its STABs wreck Rock, Water and Ground, while it only runs into problems when you get to Fire, Psychic and maybe Poison gyms, IDR if it resists. Oh, and it also means that your rival gets Zard.
As for the Grass gym, I think that most all grasses back then were Poison/Grass.

I actually go for the Bulbs, because it gives me an edge in the first two gyms. I even have one as the partner Pokémon in Explorers of the Sky.
All starters are special and there is no need to show hate towards a certain one.

I ALWAYS chose Bulbasaur...(except in SoulSilver because I was a douche. ._.)

Bulbasaur > every starter (except Totodile)
