PAL (phase alternating line) is a colour encoding used in analogue televisions, and now on DVDs (and games) in reference to frame rate. PAL, as opposed to NTSC (National Television System(s) Committee), runs at 25 frames per second, while NTSC is 30 frames per second. If you convert PAL to NTSC then extra frames are added and eventually the aurdio and video go out of sync, where-as converting NTSC to PAL means that frames are dropped.

I suggest looking up both on wikipedia for a more complicated explanation.

PAL is basically for Europe and Australia, like Razor Leaf says it's to do with TV screens. NTSC for America and NTSC-J for Japan. Games are encoded so they cannot work on regions outside of where they sell (you cannot paly PAL on NTSC and visa versa). You can play any GBA/DS games from other regions on your GBA/DS because of the handheld screen.

PAL is the european version of NTSC. NTSC is found in tvs in America and PAL is found in TVS in austrilia. When watching a show in america you will proboley see a little NTSC message at the top of the screen.

That is why when I was younger I could not order games or DVDs from America cos of the PAL system Australia uses. This also means that we get Video games abit later cos they must be made to PAL by Nintendo Australia while Americans get games straight from Japan as soon as they are translated.

PAL games CAN be played on the PAL Gamecube, but they very faulty and freeze often (I would know).

Is PAL for Europe and Australia? I know America has their own version, Japan has their own version, what does Africa get?
