Not What I Wanted (A Pokemon Colosseum One-Shot)

Silverline

Frontier Outcast
-Not what I wanted-

To think, when I started this, that all I had thought about obtaining was the worlds most powerful Pokemon and using them to acquire the power I rightly deserved. I wasn't made to be a lowly little lackey for a Team Rocket clone and when I saw my chance, I took the Snag device and took off, leaving Team Snagem's base in ruins that destroyed the other Snag device so those idiots wouldn't be able to do what I had planned. Now, however, after taking a Hyper Beam attack to the back, I think all of Team Snagem would laugh at me for my stupidity. And yet, given the chance, I'd do it again. I don't know why I would do it, don't know why I feel like a should, but I think it's all because of her and what she's done to me.

No sooner had I stolen the device, planning on who exactly I was going to Snag a Pokemon from, I happened to run into two guys apparently in the middle of a kidnapping. Though I wished to lay low, these morons happen to get it in there heads that I was there to cause the trouble, challenging me to a battle. Espeon and Umbreon didn't even break a sweat talking down their weak Pokemon and after defeating them we had brought enough attention to ourselves that several of the townsfolk had come to investigate.

Stuck playing the role of hero to keep of suspicion, I ended up having Rui tag along with me, the girl informing me about the Shadow Pokemon as well as her unnatural ability to see these creatures. Drawn to the strength of these Pokemon, I decided that she was more of a boon, as I'd be able to make these Pokemon my own thanks to her. My first encounter with these Shadow Pokemon made me think twice when one attacked me, though by Snagging it, I was able to bring the creature under my control easily enough.

Rui seemed to become infatuated with me, however, after obtaining the Pokemon, saying that she was glad to see someone who was willing to stand up for the creatures and rid them of the dark aura the made them the Shadow Pokemon they had become. I only wished to have control over them so I wouldn't end up being attacked every single time I summoned them to battle, though for the life of her, Rui seemed unable to see that. It didn't help at all that Espeon and Umbreon, the only two Pokemon I actually cared about at the time, made sure to make their relationship with me known.

Soon we found out about a group called Cipher, allegedly the group that had created the Shadow Pokemon by shutting the doors to their hearts. While the method for creating them sounded fishy, one couldn't deny the strength nor the brutality of these creatures. However, after Makuhita and Quilava were snagged, their initial hostility that they had towards me seemed to dissipate as time went on; as well as their dark auras if Rui was to be taken seriously.

Soon enough Rui and I were on a journey to Snag all the Pokemon away from Cipher and the people that they had given the Shadow Pokemon to, which seemed to be quite a few trainers. Despite going off and playing the hero, something I wasn't all enthusiastic about, I was slowly starting to grow used to Rui's company as well as the Pokemon I had Snagged from others. Both Makuhita and Quilava became valuable members of my team, the Pokemon opening up a little more everyday, something that Rui was very happy to see.

Rui herself had a bit of an influence over everyone. Always cheerful, she seemed to just radiate joyous energy that infected anyone that got near. All my Pokemon, including Espeon and Umbreon, adored her and I often found myself smiling in her presence, though I made sure that I had wiped it from my face when ever she thought to get a closer look. I'm not sure if it was this quality about the girl that spurred my change, but I knew for certain that she was a factor.

Soon, we had met up with Minor B, a clown if ever I knew one, who seemed to hold a high ranking in Cipher. Despite looking more or less a joke, he didn't battle like one and actually was able to defeat both Espeon and Umbreon. Hadn't not been for Makuhita and Quilava, I would have probably lost that match against Minor B. Shortly after defeating him, Duking, a man that we had been helping out during our search for Shadow Pokemon, lent us his Plusle along with his support, saying he'd do anything to help protect to world from the likes of Cipher. Plusle stayed with Rui, part of a suggestion on my part, so that the girl would have at least one Pokemon to protect her in case I was unable to. This thought of her safety came as a bit of a surprise to me even as the words came out of my mouth.

After that, it was Agate Village that was our destination, originally to stop Cipher from obtaining the legendary Pokemon Celebi and then to try and help Rui's grandparents, whom I later found out lived there. After trumping the Cipher men there, it turned out that a stone said to have the powers of Celebi itself was able to purify any Pokemon. The act itself was awe inspiring, the Pokemon that I had snagged being cleansed of the darkness that inhabited their hearts, bringing their true selves back into focus. No sooner then I had done this, both Makuhita and Quilava evolved, their enhanced strength as Hariyama and Typhlosion becoming invaluable to me.

It was at this point, I must admit, I started to really feel the change with in me. No longer did I dream about owning the worlds strongest Pokemon by stealing them from others, especially after seeing the passion and determination that Hariyama and Typhlosion showed in their battles, something that I had only seen Espeon and Umbreon do before and those two had been with me ever since childhood. Rui and I were also becoming closer, enough so that I didn't mind telling her about my history with Snagem, and what I had originally obtained the Snag Device for. What floored me, though, was her reaction to it all.

“Well,” She said, giving me a smile. “You're using it for good now. That's all that matters.”

Despite us thinking we could have taken a day to relax after all this, however, Cipher popped up again by stirring up trouble over at Mt. Battle. It took all the effort of my team working together to take them down, but soon Cipher had pulled away from the famous battling facility, licking their wounds. Duking contacted us almost immediately afterwards, saying that the had captured one of Minor B's lackeys. It was thanks to said lackey that we were able to eventually access the Shadow Lab, where all the Pokemon were being sent to be turned into Shadow Pokemon.

Eventually we were able to stop the Lab from producing any more Shadow Pokemon, though we now had Cipher breathing down our necks, and I found myself wanting to protect Rui more and more though out this entire ordeal. Luckily with Granbull and Flygon (both having been purified and the latter evolved) now supporing me, I believed that little could stop us from taking down Cipher once and for all.

It all came down to the battles at Realgam Tower. Not only did I fight Minor B and the rest of Cipher's high ranking forces, but I also discovered (from the head of Team Snagem, no less) that Snagem and Cipher had been together since the very beginning. And after what I'd seen and been through from this journey, the thought that I had once worked for these bozos left a bad taste in my mouth. What really got me was that after defeating what we had all thought was the leader of Cipher turns out to be a fake and that the Mayor of Phenac, one of the men that had helped Rui and I earlier in this adventure, was the TRUE Cipher leader, Evice.

And this is where I had ended up now. My Team of Espeon, Umbreon, Hariyama, Typhlosion, Granbull, and Flygon were all putting up the fight of their lives to defeat the man that had turn them and their comrades into Shadow Pokemon, to stop his evil once and for all. And yet, even when his defeat seem certain, the man turns his strongest Pokemon, Tyranitar, onto Rui; commanding Hyper beam, one of the strongest attacks that any Pokemon can learn.

I don't know why I did it right then, but I soon found myself taking the Hyper Beam attack, the energy piercing into my body while I stood my ground over Rui and Plusle. I could see the tears in Rui's eyes at the blast tore my coat from my body as she was forced to listen to my screams of pain. All was quite as I feel to my knees, smoke rising from where the attack had hit, only the arms of Rui keeping me up.

“Wes...” came Rui's voice, wavering a bit. “Why did you...” She couldn't get the words out, overcome as she was, holding me against her. Not that I could have answered her back, as I was still only realizing what I had done myself. Frankly, I was surprised that I was still alive after that. Using a bit of the strength I had left, I raised my eyes to look at hers, understanding as I saw another tear roll down her cheek exactly why I had did what I did.

“Someone's got to play the hero.” I muttered, trying my best to pull myself up. I gave her a kind look, probably the first I had ever given anyone other then my Espeon and Umbreon, and one that we both knew was special. “Otherwise, who's going to protect the princess?”

“Very cute,” Evice interrupted, shaking his head at me. “The stupid little thief has fallen in love and protected his little girlfriend. Too bad it doesn't matter in the end. Tyranitar, HYPER BEAM!”

What happened next is something I'll never forget. As Rui hid me underneath her own body, protecting me as I did her, all of my Pokemon banned together to protect us both, Hariyama using its body and Espeon its Psychic powers to stop the attack while Flygon, Umbreon, Typhlosion, and Granbull all used their strongest attacks to strike the large Pokemon after its attack, when a Pokemon using Hyper Beam is its weakest. As Evice's last Pokemon fell he turn and ran off, activating a helicopter as his escape in just such a situation. Had Ho-oh not suddenly appeared to destroy the copter, Evice would have escaped. I had heard legends that Ho-oh would appear in times of crisis to set right what humans had done wrong, but it wasn't until today that I had believed it.

After it was all over, with me in a bed as I recovered, Rui stood by my side with a worried, questioning look. Before she had the option of asking what was on her mind, though, I pulled her down to me and gave her a soft kiss, knowing that it would answer any question she could have ever asked. I could hear all of my Pokemon in the background cheering, but it didn't matter to me. For, you see, I now had what I wanted.

Author's Note:
I just got in the mood to write an interesting piece about the Pokemon Colosseum Hero, Wes, and the pathetic story that the game itself tries to weave. In fact, I didn't even finish the game considering how bad it was. However, had the game a proper storyline, I always thought that the hero would have been a bit dark and and slowly become a good character thanks to Rui's influences along with turning the Shadow Pokemon back to normal ones. So, while this story may not be the best, I think it just a cute little one shot about what could have happened had Colosseum had a bit of a better story line.

Hmm.

Well, it was quite nicely written, and Wes having quit Snagem for selfish reasons does make sense. However, I can't help thinking that you have a very strange idea of what would have made for a better story in Colosseum, because it is the exact same story except looking into the thoughts of the cryptic, silent main character and inserting some dialogue that technically could be happening while the player isn't looking. You're not rewriting the storyline but just detailing elements we didn't see in the actual game, if you will. To call Colosseum's storyline pathetic but nonetheless think that just deciding what the character is thinking at this and that point fixes it seems... well, strange. The brilliance is that the game is open enough to interpretation that you are in fact not modifying the storyline at all, because the game does not contradict any of this anywhere. It is left an entirely open possibility that Wes was only pretending to be a good guy at the beginning of the game, and it is easy enough to imagine he might have let Rui have Plusle for her own protection - everything that happens in this one-shot might just as well have happened in the actual game despite it not being specifically shown, and to call it a rewrite of the 'pathetic story' just seems ironic.

Aside from that, what you did add is mostly altogether rather clichéd. Why would Rui not be at least shocked that she has been trusting Wes this whole time while his intentions were evil? And the hero sacrificing himself when the villain tries to kill his love interest is just the oldest trick in the book, with kissing at the end and not caring about anything else just to top all the mushiness.

You know, I think this would have worked out much better if it had been just the conversation between Wes and Rui in Agate, showing it instead of telling about it. You could have had Wes think about everything that happened in the past and tell her about it; you could have fleshed out their interactions and his feelings for her much better than by trying to cram the whole storyline of the game into it. The climatic moment here was just gone over in such a rush after such a briefly summarized retelling of the game that it didn't feel climatic at all and we don't really get to feel any chemistry between Wes and Rui in the process; he's just telling us he felt something for her, but otherwise it's pretty unconvincing.

At the very least you ought to have fleshed out the climatic battle with Evice, because at that point it still just felt like he was telling us about all those things but leaving it in mystery whether he really meant them or not.

It started out nicely, but then it just seemed to falter after that and the author's note annoyed me since you seemed to think you'd been rewriting the storyline to any significant extent when in fact you just took what was already there and inserted a bundle of clichéd character interactions in between. There really was no ingenuity, nothing that every person who played the game couldn't just as well have thought of. I can't help feeling you could have done much better with this if you'd put more effort into it.

You're right, I could have done a MUCH better job on this. Heck, this is normally the stuff a rag on all the time. I guess I just wasn't into writing this but I felt I had to write it anyway, if nothing more then just to get that one senseless out of me. At least everyone should be allowed one bad story, right?

As for the Author's note, I've got to admit I was in a bad mood when I wrote that as well as the fact that I've got a poor view of the game because of it's weakness in storyline (Something I normally hold in HIGH regard) and other such qualities about it.

Overall, I'm definitely going to be writing a better version of this tale...maybe even a novelization of the game itself, just so I can not only improve on this crappy little piece, but also give Wes and Rui the characterization I believe they deserve.

On that final note, Cliches aren't the devil's child, and some of them are fun to use every once in a while. And, if done correctly, I could defiantly see Wes risking his life to save Rui and Plusle from the Hyper Beam attack. Just a little thought.
