Mangekyo Sharingan

arent they lovely?
well its like the title. by far this is my favorite anime next to trigun. I like the american voices better than the japenese voices though. But this anime did seem a little perverted....One thing that bothers me is why they were only six episodes. But i guess thats why it was so great huh it got its bizzare point across. well here is the official discussion thread so discuss

It's an OVA. It's not meant to be long and drawn out. From the commentary on the DVD, it wouldn't have been as perverted if it wasn't for the designer, who enjoys drawing stuff like that. And I agree on the dub> sub, since it's the defining thing that made me a huge Kari Wahlgren fan.

I'll never recommend the manga to anyone, though. Horrible, horrible thing.

Well, this is an anime by Gainax, so if you were expecting anything such as amusing and self-aware fan service, interesting characters, oodles and oodles of symbolism, and an unconvetional yet fitting ending, then you get what you wanted. FLCL isn't for everyone (as anything in any medium of entertainment is), but it is enjoyable but those who can appreciate it.

Personally I really enjoyed the less-than-three hours that I devoted to watching it once I got all of the DVDs (along with the box set, through hard searching online) together and watched it all in one sitting. Fun anime, nice humor, homages and references that I liked to catch (and miss), surprisingly nice depth to its characters (particuarly Ninamori; shame she only got one episode devoted to her), great animation and artwork (Sadamoto never fails to impress with his character designs), and finally a memorable soundtrack.

One thing that I did find intriguing was that the OVA applied a few experiments in animation, which was, in my opinion, a successful attempt.

o rly?
More episodes would suck.
End of story.

FLCL was perfect with its 6 episodes.
Nothing else is needed to amplify that.

@ BattleFranky~40: Why wouldn't you reccomend the manga?
I own both books, and find them pretty entertaining.

And I find them pretty horrible. The only decent thing in the package is the art.

Quoted for truth.

I own both books, and find them pretty entertaining.

The emphasis on characters aren't that much entertaining, the humor wasn't as effective for me, and the beauty that the anime presented with the animation, art, soundtrack, and voice acting obviously wasn't present. I just couldn't get into the manga as much as the anime, even if I could read through the two volumes rather quickly.

Incidentally, why is it that all anime that involve "unconventional mecha" in some fashion become bad when adapted to manga form? *Stares at Evangelion, FLCL, Eureka Seven, RahXephon, etc.* Though, RahXephon wasn't "great" to begin with, and had the worst ending that I've seen in any piece of fiction. "Promotion of escapism" indeed.

I would say that that was the biggest problem with it, but, eh, different tastes.

FLCL... the anime of crackheads, spazzos, and perverts.

Which means, of course, that I love it!

No, that honor goes to Golden Boy.

I've never seen Godenboy, so i wouldn't know of it having those oh-so highest of honors.

The NGE manga began serialization of Feb. 1995.

The anime began in Oct. 1995.

The concept behind it was well before than, and it was Anno's creation. The manga is an adaption of the anime, particuarly evidenced by the borrowing of many scenes from the anime to the manga. Yet somehow Sadamoto is still able to f*ck up with characterization, and even be inconsistant with some plot points.

Evangelion is and always will be the anime -- what Anno created and directed. Sure, we can have adaptions of the work (including those shoujo-esque adaptions where we have a harem story going on d'yah), but the fact of the matter is that the television series, Neon Genesis Evangelion, the recap movie, Neon Genesis Evangelion: Death (not the original, bungled movie of Death and Rebirth), and the finale, Neon Genesis Evangelion: The End of Evangelion, will always be the original source material.

That honor goes to Excel Saga, or Golden Boy, as Franky mentioned. FLCL was a bit too smart as times for the experience to be completely enjoyed while being high. I mean sure, it does take the tried and true theme of a coming of age story, but it presents it in such an unconvetional fashion that people might not recognize this upon first impression.
