Official New Super Mario Bros Speculation and Discussion Thread

Wes

Iblis Wings
In the upcoming month of May will come a must have DS game. New Super Mario Bros. New power ups, new moves, new twists and tricks melded together with a simple style, simple story, and simple way to make possibly one of the DS's best games. Let's talk people. Oh and thank Wiki for the info which I found on Gamefaqs today and my Nintendo Power issues which confirmed this stuff.

EDIT-Okay then. Unofficial Speculation and Discussion.

Current information
-The plotline reveals that Bowser, along with Bowser Jr. has kidnapped Princess Peach leaving it up to Mario to retrieve her once again.

-The Nintendo Power issue #203 confirmed 80+ levels total and a world map.

There are eight worlds in total: Plains, Desert, Tropical Island, Forest, Ice, Mountains, Sky and Bowser's Lair.

-Mario, Luigi and the enemy characters exist as 3D models, while the backgrounds have fixed 2D sprites.

-Information on three new power-ups have been divulged as of this date: The Blue Shell item gives the player the capability of riding on its namesake and it's kind of like a Sonic spin, collecting three types of Super Mushrooms allows Mario to grow to enormous proportions for a limited amount of time. There will also be a mushroom that allows Mario to shrink. There may or may not be combo abilities. There are no powerups that give Mario the ability to fly.

-Most levels take place on the top screen, but the underground pipe levels are on the bottom screen.

-Mario and Luigi can use the Fire Flower, which will transform them into Fire Mario or Fire Luigi.

-The game supports two players, so one person can take control of Luigi, and both players can work together, or race to the finish. Sometimes they have to compete with each other to reach the goal, and sometimes they can fight against each other.

-When Mario and Luigi come across items such as Mushrooms and Fire Flowers more than once they can store them (up to three items at once) down the bottom of the touch screen. Players can then touch these items on the touch screen and they will drop down to Mario/Luigi.

-Moves from Super Mario 64 like the wall jump, backflip, and ground pound can be done by Luigi and Mario.

-Mario and Luigi can grab loose koopa shells and put them on to grant different powers. One of these powers is the ability to spin on the back of a shell, like the Koopas in Super Mario World.

-The flagpole at the end of each stage in the original Super Mario Bros. game returns to mark the end of the stages and when achieving a certain score, the player is again rewarded with fireworks.

-There will be multiple paths through the levels (like Super Mario World), as well as a system similar to the stars in Super Mario 64.

-According to Nintendo Power issue #202 the Koopalings will also be in this game, making it the first game to feature all eight of Bowser's children; Super Mario Sunshine included Iggy briefly in FLUDD's scan. However, Yoshi will not appear, at least in standard gameplay, as he wouldn't fit with the classic Super Mario Bros. formula.

-A recent scan shows a large coin with a star on it, which is confirmed by Nintendo Power to be the star like collectible.

-All of the minigames found in Super Mario 64 DS will be included in the game. 2-player and 4-player single-cart multiplayer modes have been also added to some of the minigames.

-The game will have a similar structure to Super Mario Bros. 3 with worlds, levels, fortresses, bosses, warp pipes and walking along the top of the screen.

-You can now store one item, SMW-style, instead of 3.

-There are alternate routes through the game, again like SMW, so different worlds can go to different other worlds.

-Five red coins hidden in each level, as well as larger coins (star coins) you use to buy more levels.

-Multiplayer is more like what was in SM64DS, competing for stars with each other.

-Released possibly with a DS Lite release as well.

Release Date for USA: May 15, 2006

Its not really official unless you ask a mod.

yeah I heard this was the prequel to the original. I also remember reading that yoshi wasnt in the game because he didnt exist as of then. Anyway according to IGN it definetly feels like the classics. The level design for the first few levels according to IGN resembles the original super mario bros. Anyway i didnt know fludd was going to be in there. I'm glad since I was afraid they were going to ignore sms.

This game looks AMAZING. You haven't got a European release date by any chance, have you?

I think it's a bit funny how they melded 3d and 2d together like that, but it does certainly look promising and it will be a title I will purchase.

I must say I was looking through the IGN videos of this from GDC and I must say I'm mighty impressed. It looks good and it also looks like it's gonna feeeeeeel good.

Deoxys Prime

Time will tell.
I remember that in one of the NP issues, it said "There will be many new power-ups, such as a mushroom, that when you collect three of them, you will grow to enormous sizes, as well as a blue shell you can ride, and a shell suit type item that allows you to slide like a Koopa to beat enemies."

So I geuss you missed the shell powerup.

But still, this is the game I'd like to buy after I get MPH, this looks promising anyway.

Done updating with a lot more info! If I'm missing anything tell me. Also how do I make them all...well white and organized like the bullet notes for the Phantom Hourglass topic?

*Gasps* You copied this from my Phantom Hourglass Official topic. Copy cat! Aww, well. It's really useful... Mind if I link this to my E3 thread? Tough. ;)

*drool* OMG, this looks terrific! I can hear the classic tunes already...:D The only problem is that the Koopalings are absent...but I seem to be the only one who thinks Bowser Jr. is a cutie anyway. I might be getting this game...but considering I had so much trouble with Yoshi's Island, I probably won't.T_T

If you think that's hard, try Super Mario Bros 3, or, better yet, the Lost Levels.

Hush, keep it down
Oooh ho ho ho, this one's gonna be big. I've already got my copy reserved at the local GameStop, and I've been eagerly waiting for it since last year (is it just me or has this game been teased for an excrutiatingly long time?)

Nintendo's gonna have a nice one-two punch this year, New SMB and Twilight Princess if they manage to pull it off.
