Official Pokémon DUB Titles - How They're Named
(Please read the first post before contributing)
Welcome, this is the official Pokemon DUB titles thead; to display all Pokemon episode titles from the US Dub, and to show how all of them got named after anything out in the world. The titles might be named after a famous quote, title, person, song, lyric, object, organization, or series. Somehow if your unable to post, just PM me your contributes. Each member can now post up to 4 contributes per day.

1 (EP001) Pokémon - I Choose You! - From Pokemon; how Ash is well known to saying "I Choose You" numerous times in the series. (the1stpkmnfan 12/31/08)
2 (EP002) Pokémon Emergency! - Pikachu was injured; it was a pokemon emergency (~-Overheat-~ 12/31/08)
3 (EP003) Ash Catches A Pokémon! - Ash had caught his first Pokemon in this episode, and makes a large deal over it in the early parts of the episode, emphasizing over to the title. Note that this is very similar to the Japanese title of "I Caught a Pokemon!", only replacing 2 of the words. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
4 (EP004) Challenge of the Samurai! - Incredible similarity to the Japanese title of "Challenge of the Samurai Boy", only with the inevitable removal of the last word. Named so because the Samurai in question challenges Ash to his first real competitive match. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
5 (EP005) Showdown In Pewter City! - Ashes first Gym Battle occurs in this episode, and the "Showdown" occurs in Pewter City and is used to show more significant importance to his other battles. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
6 (EP006) Clefairy And The Moon Stone - The title is identical to the Japanese version; this episode obviously features both Clefairy and the Moon Stone. (Juputoru 1/09/09)
7 (EP007) The Water Flowers Of Cerulean City - The "water flowers" in this episodes name is used as a metaphor to describe the (self proclaimed) beauty of Mistys three sisters. (Also note that the names of her three sisters, Daisy, Violet and Lily are all names of well known species of flowers) Of course, Misty and her sisters all come from Cerulean City, which is obviously where this episode takes place, showing the need for the last three words of this episodes title. 8 (EP008) The Path to the Pokémon League - The theme of this episode is about the many different paths a Pokemon Trainer can take in his/her training on their journey to the Pokemon League. Also, the Japanese Title is "The Road to the Pokemon League", so guess the word that got taken out! (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
9 (EP009) The School of Hard Knocks - The title of this episode is borrowed from the phrase "school of hard knocks", which can mean the (occasionally somewhat painful) education that an individual recieves from life, and since this episode is about a school, the phrase makes perfect sence to be displayed. (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
10 (EP010) Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village - The Japanese title is "Fushigidane of the Hidden Village!", displaying a huge similarity to the English title. The Bulbasaur protects the so-called Hidden Village, and consequently this shows enough emphasis to be displayed in the title, only replacing "of" with "and". (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
11 (EP011) Charmander - The Stray Pokémon - Charmander is a stray Pokemon as it's former trainer had abandoned it because of it's weakness, and it is also the first of few stray Pokemon that the gang encounters. The similar Japanese title is "Stray Pokemon - Hitokage". (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
12 (EP012) Here Comes The Squirtle Squad - The Squirtle Squad is a name given to a gang of Squirtles that terrorise local people and vandalise cities. The next people they terrorise happen to be Team Twerp and Team Rocket. This title could also be taken as a similar phrase to "here comes trouble!", which coincidentally, the Squirtle Squad are known for. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
13 (EP013) Mystery At The Lighthouse -Ashes Krabby was sent to Professor Oaks lab, and since Ash didn't know about the six Pokemon at a time rule, he was incredibly worried and considered this a mystery until Misty and Brock explained the situation to him seconds later. When they decide to come into Bills Lighthouse, even more mysteries await the gang. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
14 (EP014) Electric Shock Showdown - Both of the Pokemon that Ash and Lt.Surge use in this Gym battle are capable of using electric attacks, which are also known as electric shocks. Again, the show down in this titles name is used to show more significance than Ashes other battles so far. The Japanese Title is "Electric Shock Showdown! Kuchiba Gym!", so you should know by now which words were taken out. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
15 (EP015) Battle Aboard The St. Anne - At the climax of the episode, there is a major battle occuring on the St. Anne between the regular trainers and the Team Rocket Grunts. "Aboard" is a term used on a boat or ship meaning on, and of course, the boat in question in called the St. Anne. Japanese Title is "Battle of the St. Anne!", so not much of a difference. 16 (EP016) Pokémon Shipwreck - A shipwreck is quite simply, a term referring to a wrecked ship, either if it had sunk or been destroyed. In this episode, the St. Anne had gone the way of the former and sunk, and the name of the series is obviously Pokemon. (Also note that the ship that the service had taken place on was named PM-16, referring to the series and the episode number.) (DarkLatios 1/6/09)
17 (EP017) Island of the Giant Pokémon - After getting brutally being hit by Gyarados' Dragon Rage attack, the twerps (and Team Rocket) are temporarily stranded on a deserted island that happens to be an amusement park filled with gigantic (mechanical) Pokemon built by the head honcho of Team Rocket himself. This title should be self explanitory. Japanese title is the very similar "Island of Giant Pokemon?!" (DarkLatios 1/6/09)
18 (EP018) Beauty and the Beach - Pun: Beauty and the Beast (~-Overheat-~ 12/31/08)
19 (EP019) Tentacool & Tentacruel - There were Tentacool, and there was a Tentacruel. (Yonowau in Chaos 12/31/08)
"Tentacool & Tentacruel" was unchanged from its Japanese title, as were several other titles in the first season. (S.Suikun 1/01/09)
20 (EP020) The Ghost of Maiden's Peak - Maidens Peak is an area with a monument haunted by the ghost of a lover of which it is named after. The maiden's spirit was able to still survive thanks to a Gastly, which is obviously a ghost Pokemon. Gastlies Japanese name is "Ghos", sounding very similar to Ghost (coincidentally Haunters Japanese name), so that could have been used as the basis of this episode title. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
21 (EP021) Bye Bye Butterfree - Another self explanitory title. Ash has to finally say goodbye to his first caught Pokemon, his Butterfree, so that it can mate with a womans Pink Butterfree that it fancies. Obviously, Ash is distraught, but he hopes for the best for Butterfree. Japanese title is exactly the same. (DarkLatios 1/6/09)
22 (EP022) Abra and the Psychic Showdown
23 (EP023) The Tower of Terror - The title comes from the same name as a theme park ride. In this episode, Ash and his friends travel to Lavender Town to go to the Pokémon Tower in hopes of finding a Ghost-Type Pokémon to help him in his battle against Sabrina. (trixie08 1/11/09)

47 (EP047) A Chansey Operation - A pun off the word "chancey"; the chancey operation refers to many injured Pokemon having to be treated in a hospital for humans in this episode. (Juputoru 1/08/09)
48 (EP048) Holy Matrimony! - Holy Matrimony is another term for marriage, referring to the fact that James' parents are trying to get him married to Jessiebelle in this episode. (Juputoru 1/08/09)

50 (EP050) Who Gets to Keep Togepi? - The title is basically the same as the Japanese version's title. The episode involves Ash's group and Team Rocket fighting over who gets ownership of Togepi. (Juputoru 1/09/09)

126 (EP126) Snubbull Snobbery - Alliteration. Episode features Snubbull, who has been living in a luxury mansion and has adopted a posh - or snobbish - life and attitude. (S.Suikun 1/2/09)
127 (EP127) The Little Big Horn - Reference to the Battle of the Little Bighorn - a historical feud between the Native Americans and the United States Army. Episode features Stantler, a horned Pokemon. (S.Suikun 1/2/09)
128 (EP128) The Chikorita Rescue - Alliteration. Episode features Chikorita, which in turn needs rescuing from Team Rocket. (S.Suikun 1/2/09)
129 (EP129) Once In A Blue Moon - Nod to famous expression "once in a blue moon", which yields a rare or unlikely event. Episode involves the Quagsire holding up spherical objects to a blue moon. (S.Suikun 1/2/09)
130 (EP130) The Whistle Stop - The term "whistle stop" is used to signify railway stops. In the sense of the episode, the Ledyba trainer uses a whistle to conduct the Pokemon. (S.Suikun 1/3/09)

136 (EP136) Charizard's Burning Ambitions - The term "burning ambition" means a passionate desire to reach a certain goal. In the episode, Charizard is attempting to prove itself in its species' valley. Also works as a one-two punch, as "burning" correlates to Charizard being a flame Pokemon. (S.Suikun 1/3/09)
137 (EP137) Grin to Win! - Rhyme title. Episode involves a competition for Sunflora regarding happiness. (S.Suikun 1/4/09)
138 (EP138) Chikorita's Big Upset - A "big upset" generally refers to an unexpected result in a competition, but in the episode, Chikorita becomes upset due to Ash's affection towards Pikachu. Also bears similarity to its Japanese title "Chikorita's Jealousy!" (S.Suikun 1/4/09)
139 (EP139) Foul Weather Friends - Pun of the phrase "fair weather friends". The episode involves a tornado, hence the "foul weather". (S.Suikun 1/4/09)
140 (EP140) The Superhero Secret - Alliteration. The episode features the mysterious Gligarman, a local superhero whose identity is being kept under wraps. (S.Suikun 1/4/09)
141 (EP141) Mild 'N Wooly - Pun of the expression "wild and wooly". Episode involves Mareep, a sheep Pokemon, hence the "wool". (S.Suikun 1/6/09)
142 (EP142) Wired For Battle - The episode features a young boy who claims to not need battling because he can predict the outcome via, computer (specifically, a laptop). Seing as the "wired" has nothing to do with the actual connection, it's referring to the fact that computers generally contain wires in them to transmit/transfer data. 143 (EP143) Good 'Quil Hunting - Since Ash and some trainer were hunting for Cyndaquil. Pun from movie 'Good Will Hunting'. (~-Overheat-~ 12/31/08)
144 (EP144) A Shadow of a Drought -Pun of the phrase "a shadow of a doubt" (trixie08 1/5/09)
145 (EP145) Goin' Apricorn - Pun of the expression "going ape". In the episode, the gang must retrieve Apricorns to give to Kurt for Pokeball forging. (S.Suikun 1/6/09)
146 (EP146) Gettin' The Bugs Out - Features Ash's second Johto gym battle against an all Bug team. The term is generally used when something fails and to improve it, we sometimes say, "we're getting the bugs out". However, the term is used in the literal sense, since the gym is a Bug type. 147 (EP147) A Farfetch'd Tale - Episode features Farfecth'd - a Pokemon whose name is itself a pun of "far-fetched". The title itself is not a pun of any particular famous expression, but the name slips easily into any phrase where "far-fetched" could be used. (S.Suikun 1/12/09)
148 (EP148) Tricks of the Trade - Taken from the phrase "Tricks of the Trade" and it is used because Jesse trades her Lickitung for Wobbuffet (PurpleMew 1/5/09)
149 (EP149) The Fire-ring Squad - Pun of the term "firing squad". The episode features a Pokemon firefighting tournament, and a fire ring generally refers to any device used for fire prevention. (S.Suikun 1/12/09)
150 (EP150) No Big Woop - Usage of the phrase "Big whop", with the idea that the episode involves wooper. (Cobalt_Latios 01/03/09)
151 (EP151) Tunnel Vision - The term "tunnel vision" generally refers to the absence of peripheral vision. The episode involves the gang having to cross through a tunnel inhabited by Onix. (S.Suikun 1/13/09)
152 (EP152) Hour of the Houndour - Simple rhyme title; episode features Houndour. (S.Suikun 1/13/09)
153 (EP153) The Totodile Duel - Alliteration. Episode involves Ash and Misty dueling over who gets to keep Totodile's Pokeball. (S.Suikun 1/13/09)
154 (EP154) Hot Matches! - Not a pun, per se, though the episode revolves around Cyndaquil training for a match against Skarmory, hence the word "hot" referring to its flame abilities. (S.Suikun 1/13/09)
155 (EP155) Love, Totodile Style - The title is a pun of the old sitcom "Love, American Style". In this episode, Totodile falls in love with an Azumarill under the ownership of a trainer named Trixie. (trixie08 1/11/09)
156 (EP156) Fowl Play - Pun off the phrase "foul play"; fowl refers to the bird Pokemon Noctowl, which Ash catches in this episode. (Juputoru 1/09/09)

164 (EP164) Type Casting - The title is a reference to a show business term called typecasting. In this episode, a pair of scientists are trying to figure out whether Sudowoodo is a Grass type or a Rock-type Pokemon. The latter is the answer. (trixie08 1/7/09)

The titles might be named after a famous quote, title, person, song, lyric, object, organization, or series. Somehow if your unable to post, just PM me your contributes. 3 (EP003) Ash Catches A Pokémon! - Ash had caught his first Pokemon in this episode, and makes a large deal over it in the early parts of the episode, emphasizing over to the title. Note that this is very similar to the Japanese title of "I Caught a Pokemon!", only replacing 2 of the words. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
4 (EP004) Challenge of the Samurai! - Incredible similarity to the Japanese title of "Challenge of the Samurai Boy", only with the inevitable removal of the last word. Named so because the Samurai in question challenges Ash to his first real competitive match. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
5 (EP005) Showdown In Pewter City! - Ashes first Gym Battle occurs in this episode, and the "Showdown" occurs in Pewter City and is used to show more significant importance to his other battles. (DarkLatios 3/1/09)
6 (EP006) Clefairy And The Moon Stone - The title is identical to the Japanese version; this episode obviously features both Clefairy and the Moon Stone. (Juputoru 1/09/09)
7 (EP007) The Water Flowers Of Cerulean City - The "water flowers" in this episodes name is used as a metaphor to describe the (self proclaimed) beauty of Mistys three sisters. (Also note that the names of her three sisters, Daisy, Violet and Lily are all names of well known species of flowers) Of course, Misty and her sisters all come from Cerulean City, which is obviously where this episode takes place, showing the need for the last three words of this episodes title. 8 (EP008) The Path to the Pokémon League - The theme of this episode is about the many different paths a Pokemon Trainer can take in his/her training on their journey to the Pokemon League. Also, the Japanese Title is "The Road to the Pokemon League", so guess the word that got taken out! (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
9 (EP009) The School of Hard Knocks - The title of this episode is borrowed from the phrase "school of hard knocks", which can mean the (occasionally somewhat painful) education that an individual recieves from life, and since this episode is about a school, the phrase makes perfect sence to be displayed. (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
10 (EP010) Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village - The Japanese title is "Fushigidane of the Hidden Village!", displaying a huge similarity to the English title. The Bulbasaur protects the so-called Hidden Village, and consequently this shows enough emphasis to be displayed in the title, only replacing "of" with "and". (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
11 (EP011) Charmander - The Stray Pokémon - Charmander is a stray Pokemon as it's former trainer had abandoned it because of it's weakness, and it is also the first of few stray Pokemon that the gang encounters. The similar Japanese title is "Stray Pokemon - Hitokage". (DarkLatios 4/1/09)
12 (EP012) Here Comes The Squirtle Squad - The Squirtle Squad is a name given to a gang of Squirtles that terrorise local people and vandalise cities. The next people they terrorise happen to be Team Twerp and Team Rocket. This title could also be taken as a similar phrase to "here comes trouble!", which coincidentally, the Squirtle Squad are known for. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
13 (EP013) Mystery At The Lighthouse -Ashes Krabby was sent to Professor Oaks lab, and since Ash didn't know about the six Pokemon at a time rule, he was incredibly worried and considered this a mystery until Misty and Brock explained the situation to him seconds later. When they decide to come into Bills Lighthouse, even more mysteries await the gang. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
14 (EP014) Electric Shock Showdown - Both of the Pokemon that Ash and Lt.Surge use in this Gym battle are capable of using electric attacks, which are also known as electric shocks. Again, the show down in this titles name is used to show more significance than Ashes other battles so far. The Japanese Title is "Electric Shock Showdown! Kuchiba Gym!", so you should know by now which words were taken out. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
15 (EP015) Battle Aboard The St. Anne - At the climax of the episode, there is a major battle occuring on the St. Anne between the regular trainers and the Team Rocket Grunts. "Aboard" is a term used on a boat or ship meaning on, and of course, the boat in question in called the St. Anne. Japanese Title is "Battle of the St. Anne!", so not much of a difference. 16 (EP016) Pokémon Shipwreck - A shipwreck is quite simply, a term referring to a wrecked ship, either if it had sunk or been destroyed. In this episode, the St. Anne had gone the way of the former and sunk, and the name of the series is obviously Pokemon. (Also note that the ship that the service had taken place on was named PM-16, referring to the series and the episode number.) (DarkLatios 1/6/09)
17 (EP017) Island of the Giant Pokémon - After getting brutally being hit by Gyarados' Dragon Rage attack, the twerps (and Team Rocket) are temporarily stranded on a deserted island that happens to be an amusement park filled with gigantic (mechanical) Pokemon built by the head honcho of Team Rocket himself. This title should be self explanitory. Japanese title is the very similar "Island of Giant Pokemon?!" (DarkLatios 1/6/09)
18 (EP018) Beauty and the Beach - Pun: Beauty and the Beast (~-Overheat-~ 12/31/08)
19 (EP019) Tentacool & Tentacruel - There were Tentacool, and there was a Tentacruel. (Yonowau in Chaos 12/31/08)
"Tentacool & Tentacruel" was unchanged from its Japanese title, as were several other titles in the first season. (S.Suikun 1/01/09)
20 (EP020) The Ghost of Maiden's Peak - Maidens Peak is an area with a monument haunted by the ghost of a lover of which it is named after. The maiden's spirit was able to still survive thanks to a Gastly, which is obviously a ghost Pokemon. Gastlies Japanese name is "Ghos", sounding very similar to Ghost (coincidentally Haunters Japanese name), so that could have been used as the basis of this episode title. (DarkLatios 1/4/09)
21 (EP021) Bye Bye Butterfree - Another self explanitory title. Ash has to finally say goodbye to his first caught Pokemon, his Butterfree, so that it can mate with a womans Pink Butterfree that it fancies. Obviously, Ash is distraught, but he hopes for the best for Butterfree. Japanese title is exactly the same. (DarkLatios 1/6/09)

23 (EP023) The Tower of Terror - The title comes from the same name as a theme park ride. In this episode, Ash and his friends travel to Lavender Town to go to the Pokémon Tower in hopes of finding a Ghost-Type Pokémon to help him in his battle against Sabrina. (trixie08 1/11/09)
